PS1 Appreciation Thread

A big chunk of my games are PAL, particularly on the consoles I had when they were current. I don't want Sonic to play 17% faster, to me it plays at the right speed at 50hz. I didn't know any different as a kid, and I don't care now. 

 

Consoles I didn't have however, I often have a mix of PAL and NTSC-J games. My Super Famicom collection outweighs my SNES collection about four-fold for instance.

Most of my NTSC titles on PS1 or SNES are RPGS's, where the speed boost wasn't too drastic of a change, the Final Fantasy games in the US had inner artwork on the cases, manuals were in colour, and of course, all the best SNES RPG's were USA only, but yeah, I'm mostly a PAL collector, it's just what is more readily available.

Main reason I get PAL PS1 games is as stated by a few other folks; they're what I am nostalgic for  - so many of those games were on my shelves when I was younger. Some of them are actually my original copies, too (such as Final Fantasy 7, 8 and 9). I've never been too much of a fan of the American cases, although in terms of storage they're a lot easier (and as mentioned by @Sketch they are the optimal versions to play).

 

But yeah, it's mostly a collection of games as they were when I was younger, really. As much as the NTSC versions run better, I don't have that connection with them as physical 'things'.

The vast majority of Dreamcast games support PAL60 so you can't go too wrong with PAL there. Stark contrast to PS2 which has really patchy PAL60 support.

I was under the impression that all PAL region games with a 60Hz option would default to NTSC 60 if selected? PAL 60 wasn't supported.

NTSC all the way. I still have a handful of pre NTSC/60Hz mode PAL games for nostalgic purposes - although I do also own the NTSC versions for almost all of them.

The Gamecube was also well provided with PAL60 support, barring a handful of very early first-party titles (Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin 1) and some cross-platform western third-party stuff (most of which was poor, so no great loss).

 

I had an NTSC-U PSOne back in the day, basically solely for playing JRPGs and rhythm games, so I'm firmly in the 60Hz camp PSX wise. I love the US cases too, particularly the multi-disc ones.

Yeah I'm probably using the terminology wrong there, I just mean the PAL region games had 60Hz options.

Most importantly, though, PAL Dreamcast reverted to the classic Sega Blue, instead of the eyesore blood-red of the Japanese and US releases. I went PAL right off with DC, got very used to seeing the blue, and when I imported the odd NTSC exclusive (eg: D2), it was a bit of shock seeing the alternate red colour scheme.

Started acquiring a few PSX accessories with the goal of having some kind of HDMI solution in the near future (be that a PS1Digital or some as yet-unannounced Analogue solution).

 

 

This lovely SCPH-1080 arrived today. It’s in splendid condition, with the D-pad still as stiff as new. Planning to pick up two of these for non-analogue games, and two Dual Shocks.

£9.40 delivered. PlayStation stuff seems surprisingly cheap to me.

That's alright, I know the seethrough, colour variants of the Dual Shock fetch a pretty penny, shifted one a few months back for £25!
Less than a tenner is decent, I've got a White one myself, and think I may have the Black one also, maybe... there's a massive box full of pads under a desk, it scares me, too many tangled wires!

The red SCPH-1080 seems to be the rare one - saw one at a good price a few weeks ago and added it to my watch list, but it was gone an hour later. I quite like the idea of a white one, but they're predictably prone to discolouration. The problem with used Dual Shocks are the analogue sticks - some people just seem to dissolve them! It's hard to find ones that still have nice texture.

 

I might be interested in any spare PSX accessories you've got, let me know if you're looking to sell. I'd also be interested in the official PS3 adaptor for PS1/2 memory cards, looks like you can use it with custom software to put old PS1 Dex Drive saves onto memory cards via a USB connection from a PC.

Ta, but I perversely only want original SCPH-1080s and 1200s, not the later 120.

 

Speaking of the SCPH-1200, got one the other week. Black again - for some reason these seem to fare best in terms of condition, not just on lack of discolouring but also scratches, grot etc. Based on the codes on the back, it's made by Alps (famous these days for their keyboard switches) in Korea - these ones seem to have a good rep for longevity. First time I'd held a Dual Shock in ages, and I'd forgotten how uncomfortable I find them, certainly compared to the 1080 which fits my small hands like a glove. I think it's the longer lips behind the shoulder buttons, which dig into my middle fingers. Interestingly, the whole pad got wider to accomodate the analogue sticks.

That raises a question, actually - how do people hold the Dual Shock?

 

Do you put your middle finger under the lip at the back and use your index finger for both shoulder buttons, or put your ring finger under the lip and use index for R1/L1 and middle finger for R2/L2?

 

I use index fingers for both shoulder buttons, I find the pad kind of falls out of my hands if I try to grip it with my ring finger.

Starting to build a PS1 collection and this looks ideal for fighters and shmups. Love the aesthetics of it as well. Recent ones have gone for £30-50 on eBay but the only current listings are people being daft trying to get £75-100 buy it now for them.

Damn, I have an auto search set up for one of those but it never shows me any in the £30-50 range - I bet I've missed some good deals! It seems tricky to find one that isn't too scratched up, or with a rusted bottom plate etc. I love that - apart from looking incredible - they're small and lightweight without being too small to mod if needed. (I have a Brook Retro Board so I can already use a stick on the PS1, but I've still always wanted a Namco stick. They're just beautiful and iconic, somehow. All of Namco's PS1 peripherals are great, and I wish I'd paid more attention to them at the time.)

I got a bunch of Japanese PS1 games recently and spent the best part of a week hammering Tenchi Wo Kurau II. I wanted to 1 credit clear it, and almost did it the third time I tried. After that I spent 3 days losing lives at stupid points and quitting. It turned out that I learned the game and got lazy trying to breeze through it quickly. When I took a step back and took my time again I managed to clear it. 
 

I forgot how epic the little PlayStation jingle is on startup as well. Umehara Kawase up next.

I'm going to be selling one once our lockdown is over in a few weeks.  It doesn't seem like an essential reason to be out and about

 

It's not going to be £30 - £50 though.  I paid almost £50 three years ago and spent a fair ol' wedge on having it modded with Sanwa parts by good ol' @Treble.  But ya know, on the off chance you're interested in something more...bespoke*. It's a gorgeous thing.

 

I shifted half my retro stuff last year but given how crazy prices have become I've pretty much resolved to flog the lot this year.  Fuck it.  People paying crazy money for some of the stuff I still have, like an MD2/MCD2, PSOne with Sony LCD, even Atari Jaguars are being bought unboxed for £200. It's madness and I'm cashing out of it while people are being stupid with their money! I'll emulate.

 

*To add - obvs to a 'mukker I wouldn't be asking mental eBay prices.  I realise I'm probably coming across as a greedy bastard.
