Sonic The Hedgehog (Live Action) Nov 2019

Recommended Posts

Probably knocked some planes out of the sky, too.

and caused some traffic accidents.

Knocked out air conditioning in the desert too, which may have killed some elderly people depending on how hot it was.

I guess fans get the product they deserve.

Sonic fans are the worst fans in geekdom so I can see why they get shat on so much.

This cost $90m.

$80m must have been Jim Carrry's fee.

That’s bonkers, beyond the expense of redoing all the CGI in scenes featuring Sonic and having to completely alter all marketing materials. Surely various merchandise deals have been done and stuff is already being produced based on the man hog design.

This film will bomb at the cinema as Sonic fans don’t leave the house.

Crazy if if they are redoing all the CGI! I spoke to my wife about this, she has a cursory knowledge of Sonic but thought the trailer was a spoof and not legit. ‘He has human legs’.

I'm just boggIed that they seem surprised by the reaction. If you aren't aware your main character looks like garbage, how can you even gauge the quality of the film you've made?

Those poor VFX artists. :(

Yeah it’ll mean redoing all the Sonic effects shots plus all the rotoscoping on all the shots where Sonic interacts with non CGI. New model, new rig, new animation....if only they had done some animation tests for fans to get a reaction. The effects house must be gutted....time to dig out the turd polishing shaders.

....Maybe its all some some bait and switch misdirect like they used on the Endgame trailers.

I'm sure he gave an interview around the time of the original silhouette poster explaining the reasons they 'had' to ditch the classic mono-eye and body shape? They basically amounted to "it didn't look realistic", as if that thing they ended up with in any way does.

Yeah the idea of 'fixing' the character at this point is absurd. You could you spend crazy time/effort/money into redoing the model and rendering all the bits with Sonic again but the reality is that it would really screw up the interactions between sonic and the environment/humans etc.

Thing is, even if by magic it all just worked and Sonic looked EXACTLY like how we wanted. It's clearly still a 'bad' movie. People are not suddenly going to want to go and see it because Sonic looks correct. I think if ANYTHING, fixing Sonic would drive away the huge potential audience of people who were getting excited about watching the trainwreck. Just let it be, it's clearly getting people talking.

Spoiler

Perhaps they NAILED the design all along and have rendered it out but some genius marketing prodigy was like 'Lets make a AWFUL looking Sonic, we just need to do a few scenes and release it as a trailer. Get people talking about it, let it become a meme. Then we say we're going to fix it and later show the proper footage!"

I've seen a few people suggest that they've already made the film with the "good" model and purposely shown a bad one so they get praise from the community for fixing it. I scoffed at the idea, but nothing would surprise me anymore.

I guess it does seem less absurd than them getting this far through production with seemingly nobody (including Sega) having a problem how the character looked, then suddenly changing it because of some backlash.

And yeah, the movie looks pretty dire regardless of what the blue rodent looks like, so why bother pumping more money into it?

The director even said in an interview a while back that the people from Sega were less than thrilled with the design. I remember thinking at the time that it was a weird thing to admit.

Wishful thinking maybe, but a marketing stunt doesn't seem completely unlikely.
