Same reason Dennis Hopper played a non dinosaur bowser in the Mario film, producers not having a fucking clue.

In this particular case it sounded more like the director projected his own very specific opinions about animation and rigging onto the design.

It's always baffling when a film version of something is announced and the dickheads in charge proceed to jettison some/most of the things everyone liked about it in the first place.

"Let's make a Masters of the Universe film! We'll spend 5 minutes on Eternia then GO TO EARTH! Because we've always wanted to see He-Man running around fighting faceless mooks in a convenience store, right? Everybody loves that kind of thing."

"Killer idea, boys! BIRDS OF PREY! Except let's ditch the boring cripple and replace her with Harley Quinn. And we'll make Harley the focus and whenever she's not on screen someone will ask "where's Harley?". And for the kids we can throw Cassie in too except all that not talking and not killing stuff is boring so let's get rid of that. Oh and I suppose we can squeeze in the actual Birds of Prey girls too if there's time."

"So yeah, let's make G.I. Joe and what we'll do is we'll call it 'The Rise of Cobra' except the twist is Cobra won't show up until the last 5 minutes, at which point they're immediately defeated and imprisoned! And we'll ignore the fact that everyone traditionally had cool outfits reflecting their particular skills or special forces unit and instead stick everyone in the same boring generic digital camo army uniform. And Cobra Commander can't be a bitter failed businessman secretly implanting agents in modern society and building up militia groups all over the country, no. Much better to have him be a disfigured random army dude turned mad scientist who makes a power grab in the last 5 minutes, oh yes. Someone bring me more Charlie, dammit."

Burn, Hollywood, burn, etc.

It's usually either about needlessly making it an origin story to convince investors it's going to turn in to a trilogy, or having about to crank it out for like $100,000 on a Tuesday because you're a trash movie factory that has inexplicably find itself as the highest bidder for the He-Man rights.

Especially when you can point to the marvel movies as successful examples of “just stick to the source material”

Yeah but not in a charming Super Mario Bros way, just a shallow corporate way :(

Yeah that trailer was overwhelming corporate tested. Trying to make it feel like the tone from Spider-Man Homecoming including some of the tracks used in that.

This looks great, and it fits perfectly within the Sonic the Hedgehog™ canon: Robotnik will clearly follow Sonic back to his own dimension at the end, which explains why he was the lone human in the games. Looking forward to spotting all of the zone name references too.
