Ellie is the main playable character in The Last of Us: Part II

Just confirmed by Neil at the PSX panel. Also, she's 19 in the game. Interesting. I really enjoyed her part in the first game, and I can't wait to see where this goes.

The game's theme is 'hate'.

I can see why people are dissapointed with Ellie and Joel being back but knowing it was Naughty Dog who made this incredible first narrative, I have enough faith to at least see how they go about taking it further before already being upset and knowing absolutely zero about the narrative in Part II. People could finish it and be thankful they didn't let it rest - it could be that good. It might not -  but the point is there is no way to tell.

It depends on whether you think an audience or the creator is best to decide when something is something is truly left closed. An interesting concept.

So excited about this.

When I first read that Joel and Ellie would be returning my heart sank a little because these characters are pretty much the only ones I've ever cared about in a videogame and I'd hate to see the commercial imperative milk another true work of art to death.

But then I saw the trailer and oh my God I'm so in already. The atmosphere, the pathos, that glorious desperate decaying world, the fragile guitar strings, Ellie's beautiful face. Book me a pre-order with an overpriced metal case, I'm sure Naughty Dog are going deliver with this.

And I say that as someone who really didn't get on very well with Uncharted 4. My feeling - Uncharted 4 didn't work because it was pushed in the wrong directions by people who didn't really want to make an Uncharted game, or who at the least weren't interested in building on the elements that really made Uncharted games popular. The narrative was completely over-stretched and seemed to be to the detriment of every other part of the game, the climbing system utterly neglected and virtually automatic, the fighting system brilliant but far too quarantined and episodic, the puzzle system arse-backwards with the most interesting and challenging puzzle at the start... No, Uncharted 4 was really a practice run for Last of Us p2. The narrative arc is already there - the father figure who is the hero, but then reappears as the corrupted betrayer. The lies coming home to roost. Plus with the vehicle system down, Ellie's journey can truely be a road trip as she navigates the abandoned highways. And with a hook shot, navigating the abandoned cities is going to be stunning. And here is a game template that truely fits the sudden violence of the sporadic shooting.

Finally, my strong feeling is that is Tommy, not Joel. I suspect this game is going to be about Ellie finding Joel to establish the truth, having estranged herself from him years ago and now being the target of some murderous firefly redux. Tommy was the familly man, and a natural place for Joel to leave Ellie when their relationship imploded. Plus Naughty Dog are great storytellers and know that the power of that reunion has to be built to gradually, and is a great motivator for the player.

I believe they were done. The creator must abide by my wishes. -_-

Ellie looks so much more like Ashley Johnson now, sort of like how Nathan Drake looks a lot more like Nolan North in Uncharted 4 I guess. So five years have passed then? Interesting. I guess it makes sense to fast forward until she's an adult if they're going to make her the protagonist, as the way you could kill mans in the first game playing as her stretched credulity a little.

Well Amy Hennig isn't writing this one presumably, so perhaps the original creator/s did decide to leave it, but the new team decided otherwise.

I'm so excited for this I almost wet myself.

Definitely Tommy in the trailer if you ask me. Troy Baker is in the game though, or at least he's on the panel which happened earlier.

I think it's quite possible that just as they've changed Ellie to look more like her actor, and just as they've changed Drake to look more like his, so too have they changed Joel to fit Baker's slimmer face. The march of technology meant the same thing for one of Baker's previous characters, Revolver Ocelot. It's the CGI Gollum/Hulk face effect - reflecting the actor in the fictional face to make the performance more true. As soon as the tech's been there both industries have jumped on it.

The first one looked good and the story and character interactions were well above most other games but the actual gameplay was shite. It's like ND are so pissed off that they have to put some gameplay in there that they shoehorn in the most banal and repetitive actions that hurt the overall experience. ND should either start making short stories/full blown movies, or employ some people who actually enjoy and appreciate the interactive element of gaming. This game will stink otherwise.

Naughty Dog are kings of the "I'll have to find a way around" school of gameplay with broken worlds without functioning passageways so every trivial traversal becomes a detoured journey in itself with every blocked door providing at least 10 minutes of play. While it works in Uncharted, in the Last of Us it became really tedious really fast. IMO of course. I still want to complete the first game but for some reason it feels like work rather than play. The monsters are crap too.

I didn't like the gameplay in the first one at first, but by the time that I got to the bit where you meet up with Bill, I was all in. I'm a sucker for a good story in games, and damn if the story in this one wasn't worth  playing to get all of it, especially Winter.

I do have the feeling that it might actually be like Brothers in that

Joel is there, but he isn't actually alive

That's definitely Joel's voice in the trailer, he's also wearing the same green shirt, jeans, and using the revolver you used for most of the first game. I don't think it's his brother or anybody else.

Many people are speculating that he's dead and Ellie is schizophrenic based on the shaking hands in the trailer, the fact he roles up after the carnage through light etc. I think they are thinking too much into it.

I hope that's not true, because Ghosts are lame. Although Ellie is the 'main' playable character I'm sure we will play as Joel at some part too, just like the switcheroo in the first game.

I'm more concerned that Bruce Straley is apparently not involved

I think part of the reason I don't think it's Joel is because I don't want it to be. Whilst I would've agreed before that both of their stories were finished, I'm actually ok with a return to Ellie. Joel coming back is not something I'm interested in, his arc was finished.

I also think if we're returning to the world for a revenge story it works a lot better if the person who died is someone we already care about.

Agreed. To tell you the truth, now that I have watched the trailer a couple of times, it seems like Ellie is imagining someone to be there. Maybe Joel when it is, in fact, Tommy.
