Do you remember your first games for your new consoles?

With Switch getting its full reveal tonight / tomorrow, it got me thinking. Most people will order it with a couple of games, and those first experiences can set the expectation of your new console for a long time.

With my Xbox One I remember picking up Forza 5, BF4 and Need For Speed Rivals. I excitedly setup my console 3 days before launch when I got home from work at 5:30pm. It wasn't until 11pm that night that I got my first taste of XB1 gaming. Damn slow installs.

Back in the 360 days I got my console with PGR3 & Blazing Angels. Damn PGR3 was good. Popped the disc in the drive and within a few minutes I'm racing in London, attempting to powerslide everywhere. After having an OG Xbox hooked up to a 28" CRT, getting the 360 and HDTV & experiencing them both for the first time on the same day, I was blown away.

I could list them all, but it'd be pretty boring. Highlights would be the Snes & Super Mario World, which I love to this day, and can still pick up my phone right now and play.

Lowlights would be a 360 and King Kong and Condemned. Not because they were bad games (well, KK was pretty meh) but because they were all I had to play for about 6 months.

PS1: F1 '97, Worms, Parappa The Rapper & Crash Bandicoot. God my parents were good to me... I'll remember this thread when I'm choosing homes for them.

PS2: Spider Man: The Movie and Jak and Daxter.

360: PGR3, Oblivion and Perfect Dark Zero (which at the time I liked...)

Bone: Titanfall and Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes.

The Switch will be the first console I've ever owned at launch as long as Ninty don't announce a £500 price point tonight.

NES - Teenage Mutant 'Hero' Turtles was the game the game the bundle came with, if memory serves it wasn't the side scrolling beat em up like the arcade. Pretty sure The Legend of Zelda soon followed along with Super Mario 2.

Bugger all of these were bought on release, bar the Wii. The details took some finding...

Gameboy with Tetris, Super Mario Land

Game Gear with GG Shinobi, Batter Up, Lucky Dime Caper

Master System with Alex Kidd in Miracle World and Psycho Fox

Megadrive with Hellfire, F-22 Interceptor and Madden 92

SNES with Super Mario World, Link to the Past and Street Fighter 2

N64 with Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye, FIFA Road to the World Cup

Playstation with Tekken 3 and Gran Turismo

Dreamcast with Chu-Chu Rocket, Wetrix+, Soul Calibur and Bangai-O

Gamecube with Super Monkey Ball, Rogue Leader, Smash Bros (swapped for THPS3 a couple of days later)

Xbox 360 with Hexic HD, PGR3, Geometry Wars, Crackdown, Gears of War, Dead Rising

PS3 with The Last of Us

Wii with Wii Sports, Excite Truck, Madden 07, Wario Ware Smooth Moves, Twilight Princess, Sonic and the Lost Rings, Wii Play

Vita with MotorStorm RC, Everybody's Golf, Guacamelee!

Wii U with Nintendoland, Wii Party U, NSMBU+NSLU, Rayman Legends

edit: worth noting that I bought the N64 just to play OoT, and from the Dreamcast onwards I've started buying games before I've even owned the consoles (Bangai-O for DC for 5 or 10 quid at game, SMB and Rogue Leader for Gamecube I picked up when "cheap" for £32 at the airport and so on).

edit2: actually, it's possible we bought LttP and SF2 on holiday in the US before we actually got the SNES itself as well.

C64 - "Commodore Sports Pack" by Ocean
NES - SMB1, SMB3, possibly Snake Rattle 'n' Roll?
GB - Tetris
MD - Sonic 1, NHLPA Hockey '93 and maybe something else
MS converter bundled with MD - Sega Chess
PS1 - I know we had some awful game based on Jurassic Park: The Lost World and maybe something else. I hope we had something else besides that.

EDIT: it was V-Rally! Pretty sure it was, anyway. We had some kind of "build your own bundle" deal where for a certain price we could buy a console and two games from a given selection, which is how we ended up with JP.

DC - maybe Soul Calibur but I'm really not sure as it was a late purchase so it could have been anything...

Xbox - Burnout 3
GBA - NES Classics: Castlevania
DS - Polarium. And then Ouendan a few months later
PSP - this might have been that Archer McLean's Mercury game but again I bought it late into the launch

PS2 - again, I can't just guess from the launch lineup here. Maybe Viewtiful Joe?

360 - Gears of War, PGR3, Tony Hawk's 8 (I know)

Vita - Everybody's Golf, Wipeout 2048
PS4 - GTA V and Destiny

I think the Vita was the last "good" launch for me - dat screen! those games! the functionality! Getting a PS1 was also pretty special as it was the last "family" console before we all started doing our own gaming things...

I also remember the OG Xbox. I didn't have it at launch, I picked it up much later. Probably early 2004? I was a PS2 lad until that day, then I saw an offer GAME had. Crystal Xbox, 2 controllers, PGR2, Halo 1, & 2 other games for £99. Picked that up in town that day and have been Xbox as my main machine since.

Spoilered for boring

Spoiler

bold means bought at launch

Spectrum - Almost positive Barbarian 2, plus a load of pirated tape games and stuff from the front of magazines as my dad had secretly been trying to 'learn it' for ages.

Megadrive - Sonic 1 and Taz-Mania (which I remember being great but is actually a buggy mess)

PS1 - Resi 2 and Tekken 3

PS2 - Tekken Tag Tournament, Riiiidge Racer 5 and Gladiator on DVD

GBA - Mario Kart Super Circuit

GBA SP - nothing, hurrah for console upgrades!

Gamecube - Monkeyball and Rogue Leader (Which I game 10-day'd for Waverace: Subtitle)

Xbox - Halo

DS (japanese) - Mario 64 DS and Polarium

PSP (Japanese) - Riiiidge Racer

360 - Perfect Dark Zero and PGR3 (which I 10-day'd for Kameo)

PS3 - Motorstorm, Resistance: Fall of Ham

Wii - Wiisports & Twiilight Princes (I actually had a pre-order with toys r us and they called me up the week before and said I had to buy Disney's Cars and a £40 accessorie pack and I went mental so they changed their mind)

3DS - Riiiiidge Racer

Wii U - NSMB U / Luigi, 3D World and Lego Marvel Avengers (Argos deal)

PS4 - The Last of US, GTA V and Far Cry 3 (Argos deal)

Snes, N64, Dreamcast - whatever random games were with it on ebay, from a nice guy on the forum and cash converters

The conclusion I draw from this is that buying consoles at launch is idiocy and I miss game's 10-day returns

Sonic 1 on the Megadrive blew my mind, especially as it had just come out and my brother & me were expecting an NES for Christmas.  Similarly Ridge Racer on the PS1, I'd played it at the Trocadero and couldn't believe the same game was on my fucking telly.  It took me ages to save up enough money to afford another game so just played that non-stop for months

The only consoles I've ever bought on launch day were the DS and 3DS. I think I got just Mario 64 DS with the original one, I got Pilotwings and something else shit with the 3DS. Nothing memorable or particularly decent, especially compared to the great times I've had with both machines since.

I usually get a console when there's a game I really want. I got my PS1 with FFVII and Tekken 2, probably the best value I've ever gotten out of games purchased with a console. I got Devil May Cry and Dark Cloud with my PS2 because GTA3 was sold out everywhere but my birthday wasn't waiting. I got my Gamecube with just Animal Crossing. Xbox with KOTOR. 360 with Fallout 3. I think I just got Wii Sports with my Wii, I got that pretty early on. I bought the PS3 when my second 360 died, can't remember what I got with it. Got a Wii U with SM3DW and the PS4 with Bloodborne.

Easy to remember for the most part, as I only tend to get a console either a) when I have at least one game I really want to play on it, or b) it's extremely cheap. And the earliest computers, though not bought for me and thus not generally loaded with great games, are memorable as I had no home consoles at the time so latched onto whatever was available.

All in chronological order, with the bundles that I really enjoyed in bold:

  • Atari ST: Yogi's Great Escape and Prince. Yogi's Great Escape was terrible, but Prince (a completely forgotten early real time tactics game) was surprisingly great.
  • Game Gear: Sonic the Hedgehog - I got to choose a handheld console when I was seven as I had to travel for an hour on the train twice every week to visit my dad. He took me to a game store where I got to demo a Lynx (Batman Returns), a Game Boy (Mario, of course), and finally a Game Gear (Sonic). Having never played home console versions of any of the above (it was the early 90s in Britain and I lived on a council estate, so unsurprisingly I didn't know anyone who owned a console apart from a couple of Master System owners, and neither of them had Sonic) all of the games were revelations, but in the end it was no contest. Probably my favourite present of all time.
  • IBM Compatible (a Pentium 90, to be precise; our first PC, and thus the only one to appear in this list) - TFX, Dawn Patrol. I was never much into flight sims, but both games astonished me with their visuals. Great games in genres I actually cared for would shortly follow.
  • Game Boy: Star Wars. Meh.
  • Saturn: NiGHTS Into Dreams, Fighters Megamix - it was 1998, and the local independent had a second-hand Saturn up for £30. I snapped it up, along with two games that looked decent, and promptly blew myself away. A glorious introduction to home consoles.
  • Dreamcast: Soul Calibur, Monaco Grand Prix. My first launch console, and what a way to start. Monaco Grand Prix was fine, but Soul Calibur was incredible. I didn't even have a memory card for the first week, but I still had a great time playing through the arcade mode and getting the hang of the initial characters.
  • Neo Geo Pocket Color: Card Fighters Clash - a bit disappointing, this. Having heard great things about CFC, I found myself distinctly underwhelmed. Ah well.
  • Xbox: Halo, Dead or Alive 3. My second launch console! Dead or Alive 3 was pretty good. Halo is the greatest pure combat first-person shooter ever made. Not a bad start.
  • Gameboy Advance: Pokemon Sapphire. Picked this up to wile away the time when I finished sixth-form and headed off to Australia to work for half a year. Sadly, I found Pokemon Sapphire a bit lacklustre (which I should have guessed, as I'd never enjoyed Pokemon Blue). Fortunately, I would shortly end up getting some incredible games for the GBA (among them F-Zero, Warioware Inc., Fire Emblem, Advance Wars), and the GBA would end up being my favourite handheld console. But not the greatest of starts.
  • Gamecube: Super Monkey Ball, Luigi's Mansion. Ehh. I really like SMB... but I'd already played it a lot at friends' (and rinsed the GBA version), so it wasn't revelatory, and Luigi's Mansion was, well, best to ignore that game I think.
  • DS: Feel the Magic XY/XX, Mario 64 DS. The first and last time I would buy a launch console without a game I wanted to play on it (and thus far the last time I've bought a launch machine full stop); also the first and last time I would buy a launch handheld, or indeed import a launch console. I love the DS, but this wasn't a great lineup.
  • PS2: Zone of the Enders. Meh. At least it was cheap, and I'd end up getting Ico and SOTC later on to make the purchase worthwhile.
  • PSP: Jeanne d'Arc, Wipeout Pulse, Wipeout Pure. A brilliant line-up to open with when I finally nabbed a PSP. The only downside was that, in the end, there weren't many other games worth getting.
  • 360: Mass Effect, Halo 3. Oh, Mass Effect
  • PS3: Valkyria Chronicles, Wipeout HD, Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2. Uncharted 2 was a complete waste of money and time. Demon's Souls was tedious. After hearing so much good about them, and finally having found a job after a year unemployed post-graduation to pay for the console and games, these were bitterly disappointing... but Valkyria Chronicles and Wipeout HD were pure brilliance. Purchase justified.
  • Wii: House of the Dead: Overkill, Wario Ware Smooth Moves, Boom Blox, Mario Kart Wii. Pure, unmitigated mediocrity (I still struggle to understand how anyone could make a House of the Dead so dull, or a Warioware so middling). But it was a damned convenient Gamecube game player and the whole bundle came to like £50, so I could hardly complain.
  • Vita: Wipeout 2048, Assassin's Creed thingummy. Wipeout was worth it alone. Four and a bit years on I still haven't even tried that Assassin's Creed game. One day.
  • 3DS: Fire Emblem Awakening. Yeah, this was pretty great, but it wasn't mindblowing - playing a slightly-less-good-than-the-GBA Fire Emblem, while enjoyable, didn't quite inspire.
  • Wii U: Zombie U, Wind Waker, Nintendoland, Wii Party U, Bayonetta 2. A whole cluster of disappointments. Well, in fairness, I sort of expected that of Bayonetta 2, having never really got on with Bayonetta, but I was sad to see Wind Waker had aged so poorly in mechanics. Still, Smash and Hyrule Warriors would come out shortly and render my purchase not entirely pointless.
  • PS4: Batman: Arkham Knight, Bloodborne, infinite PSPlus. I fear the infinite PSPlus actually spoiled this, as I was too overwhelmed by all the choice to really focus on a game to enjoy, best demonstrated by my not enjoying Bloodborne until a good year later following the extremely kind lending of the game to me by mdn2, at which point I finally discovered that yes, actually, I love it. Doh!
  • Bone: Halo Anthology, Halo 5, Rare Replay: and I thought Halo 2 was disappointing. Christ. Rare Replay was nice at least, but hard to get excited about; see also the Halo anthology (outside of 4, which is definitely not nice).

Edit: fucking hell, Kevvy really will neg me for anything

The most memorable for me by far was getting a Gameboy Color with Pokemon Blue around the age of 10 or 11. I'm pretty sure it was the first console I owned myself (my brothers monopolised the megadrive and n64) and I was totally obsessed with it. I can't remember playing any games other than Pokemon on it. I'm not sure I ever owned any.

I've fond memories also of Super Monkey Ball and Rogue Squadron on the Gamecube, and Konami Krazy Racers and Castlevania CotM on the GBA.

Since then I've always been a year or two late to each console. Mirror's Edge and Little Big Planet were my introduction to the PS3, Viva Pinata to the 360.

For the life of me I can't remember what the first games I played on PS4, XB1, 3DS or Vita were.
