Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Wave 4 Tracks: March 9th

I only realised last night that you could download and watch the ghosts of the best drivers in the world doing time trials. Mind blown at some of the shortcuts these guys take. Just on the first track (Mario Circuit?), using pretty much the same set-up I was, some guy was doing it 16 seconds quicker, by using the three shrooms to take one cheeky shortcut on the final bend I'd never even imagined.

That's my TV viewing sorted out for a few nights then!

I think this was the same with the Wii U version, but when you get coins and can unlock stuff. WTF can you do it only one at a time?

So you need to return to the main menu, go through to the cup mode, choose character and then it unlocks the new item (car/bike, wheels etc) and then you need to go back to the main menu and repeat. I think i ended up doing this 6 times in a row. Should have just unlocked everything in one go really.

Maybe it can be patched but i doubt Nintendo will. Just kinda wished this had been fixed for the switch version.

I've noticed this occasionally while playing online. I think it's a lag/server issue. Normally you can speed up the reels stopping by tapping the item button repeatedly but this doesn't work when the items are taking a lot longer than usual to finalise and you just hear a horn noise instead.

Me when this happens as I'm being pursued by a red shell.

Why do the items sometimes take an unbelievably long time to generate after you've grabbed an item box? Is it the kart I'm using? The cc of the race? Sometimes it seems to take forever.

I've always assumed this is just another way that Mario Kart penalises good driving? In the same way that recovering from a lightning bolt takes at least twice as long if you're out in front.

Turn on auto accelerate. Honestly, it feels really nice to only have to focus on the triggers and the very occasional press of the brake button. It actually emphasises how pointless it is to have to constantly keep a button held down to move in a racing game, it's not like auto steering where it removes an element of skill.

You can still get the starting boost with it too, you just never have to touch accelerate again once you've gotten it.

Good point actually but like Paulando below I'm not sure I want to relinquish control as I do actually ease off the acceleration a smidge on occasion.  Also would auto acceleration rule out boost starts?

I need to hold the accelerate button in this just like I need to hold the run button in Mario - it makes me feel more in control, and makes me a better player as a result.

Indeed mate.

I've added myself to the list in the first post, but because I was away for the weekend and my joy-cons are currently being serviced I've done one single race offline.  Not sure how soon it'll be before I get online to race but add me anyway (please!).

Nah it's definitely a bug or lag issue that only happens online, it was the same on the Wii U version so i'm quite surprised they haven't fixed it really.

Does anyone know if the timing for the full boost at the start line is different when playing on multiple consoles linked via wifi?

I can nail them 99% of the time when playing single player or online at home but today in that configuration was cocking them up probably 75% of the time. It's the only explanation that I can think of.

Definitely lag. It's the main reason why I go for regional races rather than global where it can be quite pronounced.

Me too, I ease off the acceleration quite a bit to prevent driving into someone's trailing item in a tricky track situation.. And it's useful in other scenarios too, like avoiding an unwanted draft into the wall disaster. Always have done.

Just spent 20 mins playing this online, lot of fun but bloody hard against real people.

Have only played it for around an hour, mybe an dhour and a half since it arrived, for some reason I've just not got any passion for it, burnt out on MK8 - Wii U :(

GGS to the 7 or 8 other RLLMUKers that were on last night. A lot easier to get a game than trying to join Global/Regional. Team race is really good. I came last, obviously. If anyone is struggling to find a decent game i recommend adding some people from here and get involved in some wicked races.

I am not sure whether i went set up a tournament or just a room and everyone can join. I wish it had a proper lobby system like the wii u version.
