One of those solutions is a scrolling digital ticker, like the LED versions which are used to display the latest stocks and share prices.

Sirotkin confirmed at Williams, with Bob Kubica as reserve.

 

Williams will likely get a tonne of shit for that move and the guy will be labelled a pay-driver, but whilst it's true he has substantial backing he's also pretty bloody quick. Watched him in F2 for a number of years and I think he's certainly worth an opportunity to see what he's got at the top level.

I’d have loved to see Kubica get a drive, but he’s been gone for so long - missed seven entire seasons! - he’s by no means guaranteed to be operating anywhere near the level he was at previously. As far as I can tell he’s only actually taken part in two wheel-to-wheel races (rather than time-trial like rallies) in the meantime, so is well out of practice by any measure.

Mmm. I think it's somewhat telling that Renault, who admitted they would have loved him back, got first crack at him in a 2017 car and it wasn't enough to stop them going after Sainz, and then Williams also took a look and he didn't get that drive either. Dunno if it was the arm strength that worried them or just general rustiness. Will be good to see him around the paddock next year, though, and I still think he might drive in a Grand Prix again some day.

Had a conversation with my nephew last night because he was watching Senna for the first time. While I couldn't stand the bloke when I was growing up, he was the perfect nemesis for anyone that was at the top of their game during that period, he was the best of that generation. My nephew said he was better than any of the current crop and I reckon that's just impossible to run a comparison, it was a totally different requirement to drive an F1 car back then, they'd still be more than happy to kill you given half the chance. Some of those F1 cars were absolute animals.

 

Anyway, for me, I kind of got Ayrton after that race at Donington. It clicked because he simply shouldn't have achieved what he did with that car over the course of that season. And then you start to go backwards and look at what he had done, and while he was far too serious, he set the bar for anyone with any ambition for plans to get into F1. For me, the only modern day comparison sits with Fernando, be interesting to see how he gets on at Daytona this weekend, I don't think the car he's in has got the pace.....

 

If the Renault turns out to be half decent in the back of the Mclolren it could well define him as being all that?

Yes, the IMSA series tends to favour the "DPi" cars a little over the pure LMP2s and The Ligier probably isn't the best of those. On pure pace they'll struggle a little.

 

Other than their teammate, the car to watch is the red AFS #52 run by PR1/Mathiason, that's the only other Ligier - Gibson entered.

That was the first F1 race I ever went to, and I don't think I've ever been rained on as much since. Barrichello was also absolutely brilliant in that race, he was running 3rd (I think) until his car let him down.

It was also a race that you could easily argue Williams threw away, some shonky pit work and calls that afternoon. I'm not sure anyone has done such amazing work with what was a fairly shitty and completely underpowered car. I could never quite understand why Benneton were getting the higher spec Ford engine when Senna was bagging all the points.

 

One of the cars from that season is up for auction, I think the 5 million price tag is somewhat on the conservative side....?

And to illustrate this point the 3 Ligiers finished 16th, 17th and 18th in first practice (Out of 20 prototypes) with the Norris, Alonso car the last of those (although their best time was set by the 3rd driver).

 

The top 4 cars were DPis followed by a bunch of the best LMP2 car (the Oreca).  The one car in the entire field that isn't a Ligier, Oreca or one of the DPis was dead last.
