I really, really dislike the halo. Gutted that its probably here to stay unless they come up with some other design.

 

Other than that theres some lovely cars this year. Aesthetically I prefer cars that aren't plastered in hundreds of tacky sponsors so I tend to quite Sauber and the recent McLarens

Sometimes I feel like I'm in a minority of one with no objections to the halo at all.

 

They're still racing cars, they still look like racing cars, and if it might save someone's life in an accident then I say great.

Yeah I can overlook (unlike the drivers bahdumtish) the ugliness of it. I didn't like the raised cockpit when it was two bulges on the side of the car either but time and ingenuity has made them less obvious, the Halo will look different in the future.

I think one of the teams objected to changing it because it added advertising space, although most of the cars have so few sponsors I doubt it matters that much. At least the tv aeriel has gone which was also removed because it blocked the high value rear wing advertising space in head on shots.

They've chopped them down a fair bit, but the regulations are obviously still laxer than the “mini fins” the 2016 cars had (16/17/18 below):

I think the halo’s are utterly ridiculous . But they will probably look much better in a couple of years

In a couple of years it'll probably be a screen, that idea just needs development time.

Morning 1.

 

Honda with STR - 63 laps. 1 min 22.

 

McLaren with Renault - in the gravel with a wheel off - 1'24 on quicker tyres.

 

I mean, it's early to point the finger at McLaren for the last 3 years but it's certainly not a great look for Woking.

So the Honda in the back of the STR has gone further in one outing than McLOLren managed in almost all of last years testing?

Pretty much, as of 3pm STR were up to 90 laps, or 1.5 grand prix, and still motoring along just fine.

 

Admittedly they're probably not stressing the thing but it's not like it was getting anywhere last year even without.

 

I checked btw, McLaren managed 29 laps last year on day 1 after an oil leak.

There used to be a belief that when Ferrari were making really good road cars their on track performance suffered, I've never thought it were true but at least during their difficult years they were still at least getting podiums and wins, McLaren seem to be going through a similar period but barely even able to finish races let alone get near the sharp end of the points

I've been thinking the same of late. Mclarens road cars are largely amazing now, the F1 team is bobbins as a result.
