I can't recall seeing the Arcade Perfect feature before. Will it focus upon the arcade version or the various attempts to recreate the arcade in the home? 

This is the fourth of fifth one we've done. It's simply a fun centrefold spread of a classic arcade cabinet with a little bit of text. It's basically arcade porn (we've done more than enough detailed articles on the game over the past 11 years :) )

I really feel it's in something of a golden period at the moment. It's clearly not the magazine it was 10 years ago, as it's not as strongly 8-bit focused as it once was (something that will obviously annoy some) but I do feel the team is nailing the balance of content at the moment and the sales appear to give that some weight. We're slowly getting more and more help from PRs too, which is enabling us to tackle some of the areas we've always been massively weak in in the past (Japanese access).


Hopefully you'll enjoy this issue just as much :)

I don't mind them, but they're of less interest to me. I wouldn't say get rid of them though. The balance of old and what I would still consider new has been good recently.

 

For reference, things I especially like:

 

1) Detailed looks at old games and how they are still influencing today's games (like Super Metroid)

2) The stories of developers, especially those who were very small or have small-to-big or big-to-gone tales

3) Stuff about obscure titles

 

Looking forward to an in-depth article about the Speccy scene's implosion when you're ready. Sad times there. People I considered friends on both sides of the argument resorting to childish nonsense and threats. Out of proportion egos and people who think they should have more entitlement than they deserve. People who do so much - for free - for the community treated both like shit and royalty depending, and WOS in the middle of it and YSRnRY gone. Horrible situation.

We ran that about 11 years ago. It was the a-z of retro. By the time we got to D the anger towards it was so great it was shut down. Personally, I'd love to maybe extend the magazine by 20 pages so we could include all toys, music and tv shows, but I'd imagine the backlash would be too high.

Ah sorry don't think I explained properly, I meant the "this day in 1998" kinda thing. Saw it a couple of months back and got a kick out of it. 

 

Great mag by the way! My OH saw me flicking through in Smiths and got me a sub for Xmas ^_^

The primary objection seemed to be that retro gaming is already a broad topic, without the need to widen it further to cover other gaming types.

 

I'd be more interested in a magazine dedicated to this topic, personally. I occasionally buy Geeky Monkey mag to scratch that itch, but find it a bit lightweight in its coverage (they love white space though). An RG-style magazine that covers the experience of collecting and 'experiencing' music/TV/toys/games would be interesting.

It's not RG, but GamesTM has a short article on Zelda this month and a Gameboy round-up was printed in the recent edition of the Retro Vol 9 special.

You didn't hear it from me, but next issue of Retro Gamer apparently has a making of The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past in it...
