Forza Horizon is probably Microsoft's most successful IP right now. I think you're underestimating how popular it's become. And Mario Kart is probably Nintendo's most important IP these days.

My first point was really about Motorsport. greed Horizon is big.

The question in this case isn't what is popular on GP now. It's what what would grow Game Pass' by the 75% target they had. None of those games are, imo, popular in really terms. Like how CoD or Assassin's Creed is popular. Or how Gears or Halo was (although actually think these are much much less popular than the aforementioned third party examples).

My point is simply that to do that it needs to hit the FPS and 3rd person action-adventure game better. Which is exactly what Nate is saying too.

It's basically amazing that MS have been so so slow to ramp up first party development. Yes, games take a while to develop. Yes, they've bought studios. But imo they've targeted studios who are too slow to solve the immediate issue. Activision is different. They're the style of workhorse MS needs. A company who knows how to make games. Lots of fucking games. And how to bleed them every single year.

The disconnect between what the average forum dweller wants and what the actual general public wants can probably be most neatly summarised from this screenshot.

We obsess about big single player narrative driven action adventure games while the most popular games chart for Gamepass is always absolutely dominated by service games. Our own Nate even dismissed Grounded in his latest newsletter when it's been doing really well.

It reminds me of how Sea of Thieves has been dismissed for years on forums like this when it's been a huge success for Rare. These kind of service games often seem invisible to us lot but are actually the perfect kinds of games for Gamepass. Much moreso than a one and done 15 hour action game.

I agree with this to an extent, but to compare them to Nintendo, yes Mario Kart is their biggest game, but every year they churn out successful games that people buy and that keep the train going.

I don’t think there is any easy way around this for MS. They need big tent pole games to sell their service and get those subscription numbers up. It doesn’t matter whether they are exclusive or available on every other platform, but Phil Spencer’s comments about GP don’t ring true with me at all. Those numbers aren’t where they were expected to be, they didn’t think it would stabilise and stay level two years into the generation.

I’ve just read the hit points and it totally says what I’m trying to say there, but obviously much better than I have and with numbers and stuff.

This is also why the buying of devs and Publishers won't stop with Activision. MS will keep buying to get as much games and IP to fill GamePass as quickly as possible whilst they are waiting for the inevitable churn of first party to finally catch up.

One of the advantages of not playing things on release and just working through older games you haven't got round to yet is that, inevitably, whatever you have on your list will end up on Game Pass.

Absolutely! If you don't need to play the latest AAA level 3rd party game at launch then GP is fantastic.

It works really well for me always found something enjoyable to play and the only new game I've bought for a console in the past couple of years was Gran Turismo 7 on the PS5. Got my money's worth out of it but GP is probably the reason I only have an Xbox as a console these days. Lots of games that I have played and enjoyed on GP that were also on the Switch / PS5 but were between £15-30 a pop. Some games that in years gone would have been indie Sony exclusives now appear on multiplat and the games that interest me most usually appear on GP.

Probably becoming a bit of a casual gamer these days to be honest - although I keep up with releases not many I really want to go out and buy on release anymore happy to play the long game. Its also a fairly good strategy these days with many new releases having bugs on launch and swift price drops a few months after (if you do want to buy them).

I must admit I was a bit sceptical of GP when it launched but the first game I tried on it was Forza Horizon 4. Usually I play these on release for a solid 2-3 weeks and the interest wanes a bit. So picked GP for three months for a discounted price and never looked back its great. Love the indie titles in particular. Once MS get CoD on there it should be interesting to see what happens to sub numbers... :D

I tended to grab new releases and sell them after a bit but with things like Forza 5 they are always on the drive just waiting to go for a quick play. Finally deleted Halo the other day after they said there wasn't going to be any co-op. Online doesn't appeal to me much these days.

A bumper month! Monkey Island, Pentiment, Somerville and Vampire Survivors will all get played (He says, crying at the size of his GamePass backlog.)

I really hope Valve and MS sort out some proper Game Pass support for the Deck soon - locally downloaded games instead of all this streaming malarkey.

Split screen, you mean? Pretty sure co op is still inbound, just has to be online.

Shame they don't have split as an option, but tried that with gears 5 and... yeah, I need a screen each these days.

There is a workaround to play split screen on Infinite that works OK on PC and I'm fairly sure works on Series X too.
