I have never played a Monster Hunter game, would this be a good entry to try?

Definitely, it's a bit more streamlined than other entries and focuses more on the action, with some nice QOL changes.

(It's still fairly complex and does a piss-poor job of explaining itself, but stick with it, once you're hooked you will be a fan of the series for life).

I keep considering buying a PlayStation 5, I'm sure it's a good machine and there are definitely some games I am interested in.

Then I look at my to play list on gamepass, I see posts about what is coming and I wonder where I would find the time to play a PlayStation?

Gamepass recently added a hidden gems category and I'd like to play the majority of those let alone what else is on the service or coming soon. There simply aren't enough hours in the day is there.

The two best Personae,* I can't recommend them enough. Technically showing their age, but they're just top-tier JRPG/Life Simulation hybrids, and their music and ambiance still impress. Absolutely get on them if they appeal at all!

*well, I have a mild preference for FES over P3P, despite the free control and extra character, but still

I know nothing about these, but I've been thinking I might give them a look. Which one should I start with?

As much as I think 3 is the stronger story, 4 is a far more approachable introduction to the series, so I'd say go for that one. P3 still has a slightly more traditional* approach to dungeon crawling, and is a bit more obtuse on the life sim side, so it can be a more challenging game to get through. The stories are entirely standalone, so no need to worry about that aspect.

That said: the first few hours of P4 are pretty much on rails; effectively a visual novel with occasional JRPG interaction, as the game establishes its setting, takes you through its combat, demon management and social link gameplay with extreme sloth. As I happen to enjoy visual novels this doesn't bother me so much, but I know it can make the game a complete write-off for some. If that sounds like a major problem for you, then I would actually recommend P3 first; it has similar pacing in its intro, but gets through it a lot quicker.

(P5 is even worse for this, sadly. Still, none of them come close to Final Fantasy XIII's dedication to not allowing the player to make any meaningful decisions for the 20 hours or so, so there is that at least!)

Throw in owning a Switch into that... or a Steamdeck and those Steam sales. Or buy a MiSTer for perfect emulation of classic games...

There's just so much, even if you just consider new stuff on one platform there's more than I could ever manage to play, and I really want to play it all!

I'm loving God of War: Ragnarok and don't want to move onto anything else till I'm done play it (I've made that mistake many times before, moving away from a long game I'm loving to something lesser and not as fun) But it's all i've had time to play since it's release in November, and i've pumped in over 40 hours.

What with going to work, and doing all other life admin type stuff, that's been all my disposable videogame time used up! I'm sometimes fucking amazed at how quickly some people can blast through games, presumably now adults in their 40's 😂

Some of us are still in our 30's,* granddad! Mostly through I just "blast through" games the same way I always have: by not finishing them. Precious, those rare exceptions that cross the finish line!

Persona 4 Golden is great after the first few hours. I completed Persona 3 FES a long time ago and will have a look at the portable version - am I right in thinking it will not have the in-engine cut scenes of the PS2 version?

Will give Monster Hunter a shot again.

I never thought that when I played it. The dungeons are a bit samey but, unless you're aiming to 100% things, I found you could mainline through them pretty much.

Haven't played P4 yet, mind. Doing 250 hours or so on FES put me off starting the next one in this time of my life. I'm sure I'll love it, though.

Well that's "bye bye" from me for now on Game Pass. 👋 My 2 years of stacked up Ultimate ends on Saturday and I've decided to not renew it.

I've played some brilliant games on the service, including some proper indie gems, but my venerable old Xbox just isn't getting a look in really nowadays and there isn't anything on the list I'm really aching to play anymore. To be honest most of the stuff I'm now playing on it with my lad on it is things we've bought anyway (like Lego games, etc..).

I am entertaining an All Access sub for a Series S once the XBone eventually dies (and the new crop of first party games start landing from their various dev purchases), but until then I just don't think I can justify the cost for the amount of use it gets unfortunately.

I'll be lurking here still in case anything exceptional lands that tempts me back in. :D

Got 3 years of this last night using the gold conversion method.
I don’t have an Xbox console but I do have a decent gaming pc. I got this mainly for the streaming stuff and having played 3 hours of Like A Dragon last night, I’m very impressed.  I had considered buying a steam deck, but since I’d only use one at home anyway, I think this is more than good enough for my needs.

I already have a ps5 and psplus extra which means I already had access to Like A Dragon, but there’s a difference between finding the time to sit at the ps5 in a separate room and play through a game of that length and being able to play through it on on a phone/iPad while others watch tv etc.

With game pass and psplus extra, it really does feel like we’re in a golden age at least in terms of access to good games at the moment.

I didn’t have much luck finding an answer to this with a quick google search but if I play via cloud and also have the game downloaded on pc game pass, can I alternate between the two with the same save file? I’d assume it’s possible with the series consoles, but maybe not with PC?

Only if it’s a cross play game. Some are and some sadly are not.

Thanks, I wasn’t sure if cross play applied to cloud saves.

Cloud saves are just Xbox console saves, they're not a separate thing. You can continue with that save on any Xbox console you sign into or in the cloud. But PC saves are PC saves, unless it's specifically a cross play game.

Fwiw, up until getting a Steam Deck I assumed handhelds just weren't my thing having owned lots of them ever since the OG game boy. I just always played at home so it didn't grab me when I could have a "proper" big screen experience at the same place. The Deck has been a game changer however, nowadays I have little time to sit in my mancave and the Deck has been the perfect platform to get some gaming time in while feeling like a proper big screen experience instead of "compromised to fit a handheld". Not just pc native games and (excellent) emulation, but also game pass through the cloud. Game pass on my tablet or phone is a faff due to the controls and form factor, but on a Deck with its Xbox like controller set-up, it's flawless. On my connection at least it works a treat and really feels like having a series console in your hands. Just fyi and fwiw.

Just to check, is the thread topic right still, are the details in the first post still the best way to renew?  My two years of mega-cheap Game Pass Ultimate finally expires next Friday.

Do you load and reload the Game Pass streaming app each time you turn the Deck on? I was using mine to stream Xbox games a lot, but I found that part of it a bit of a faff and it's put me off. There's lots of games on the service, however, like Pentiment, that I'd prefer to play handheld.

Yes of course, because I can't suspend and resume the Microsoft server that I'm streaming the game from...

Yes and it's the same on every platform it can be ran on. And I wouldn't exactly call if a faff esp on the Deck.

Well, I am exceptionally lazy.

No, you're right - I will give it another go when I next play a Game Pass game.

I know, I know!  I just wanted to make absolutely certain It was still current.  Cheers.

They might have turned it off between now and the last person who says they did it in here.

I'd like to think that the moment it stop working the internet is going to blow up and this thread will change tone very quickly.

You will know it's happend when you come in here and the tone has shifted from "just stacked three more years of joy" to

"fuck, I only had a month left",

"haha, gutted, I just added three years minutes before they turned it off,

"shit, why did I go to that funeral yesterday rather than staying home and renewing gamepass"

"I was trying to renew last week but it was in German and my codes were upside down and so I couldn't"

"Oh, deKay"
