If it’s not directed by Spielberg and has very little to do with Lucas, is it really even Indy even with Ford?

The only person I would trust with this property is...JJ Abrahams. He’s the only one that can make a Spielberg style film.

He's already tried in Super 8 and the end result was, whilst visually similar, as dull as dishwater.

I'm wondering what the actual audience for this would be these days. You can market Kylo Ren and stormtroopers to kids but someone who looks like their grandad trying to hobble round looking cool? Can't see that flogging many lunchboxes.

I'm just finished with an entire beer stein of cheap Lidl wheat beer and this near made me piss myself.

Because I'm a giant Indy fanboy, despite being burned by KOTCS, I'm back on the hype train baby!

Latest rumours from the UK shoot, which is just starting next week, include.... spoilered in case anyone is precious about staying in the dark on this.....

This is uncomfirmed

Spoiler

That Mads plays a Nazi scientist, brought into the service of the US via Operation Paperclip and who is assisting them in the space race....

But who really has a Supernatural McGuffin in his sights and is using the US as a way to get it...

This is unconfirmed but has been reported multiple places so I'm wondering if it will be true...

This is confirmed

Spoiler

Nazis - or Nazi property at least  - WILL be in the film. Amateur snaps from the UK set being constructed at the Bamford Castle show crates stamped with the Nazi insignia, just like the Ark was, as props for the set. Whether that means a flashback to WW2 - and a potentially de-aged or recast Indy - is still unconfirmed.

I think it’s Bamburgh Castle it’s being filmed at?

I'm assuming he has a face mask for Covid in that pic above and it isn't a new terrible way to de-age him.

Or they decide to make it 500 times worse than 4 and its set in the present day after Indy time travels to 2020 and spends the enitre film in a face mask making I'm too old for this social distancing shit and denying the vaccine.

In related news, the previous four films have been upgraded to 4K / Dobly Vision / Atmos on iTunes, and good golly they've come out nice.

A whole new transfer which they did for the recent 4K Blu-ray set apparently. (The 1080p disks are just the old transfer though.)

I thought Indy was carrying a can of Strongbow Dark Fruits at first up there, just swaggering out of the pub on a nice afternoon.

I have faith in the competency of James Mangold's directing. I don't think he'd have taken this on if he didn't think he could do something decent with it. He understands what different genres need and hasn't really made a bad film, though i think the last half of The Wolverine is rubbish.

He’s got that old man saggy trouser thing going on, bless him. :(

Raiders of the Lost Ark is, without doubt, my all time favourite film and one of the best films ever made. I don’t hold much hope for this but I will watch it regardless and, at worst can pretend it doesn’t exist, just like Crystal Skull.

How do you think the 4K iTunes versions of the old films will compare to the UHD discs? Will there be a noticeable difference in terms of streaming vs the physical media? I'd be playing the films through the Apple TV+ app. £34.99 sounds a lot better than the £80 being charged for the UHD collection, but not if the discs are a lot better.

I had a quick Google, and Apple’s 4K streaming is about double 1080p Blu-ray’s bit rate, and anywhere between a fifth and half the UHD Blu-ray bit rate. So half the price for half the bits doesn’t seem too bad?

How much of that will be discernible to the average person, though? Not baiting, I genuinely don’t know and am curious.

Honestly I think the quality of the transfer makes a bigger difference than the bit rate and resolution in most cases. The regular old Arrow Blu-Ray of the thing is incredibly crisp and clear; I watched The Mummy on the same format and they piled so much edge enhancement on it that it might as well be the DVD.

I'm sure I've mentioned this elsewhere in this thread but I still think the best way to handle the Indiana Jones franchise going forward is to have Ford as old Indy, recounting an adventure where a new actor plays him at a younger age (kind of like the TV series). Then you just have the following films with the flashback new actor, allowing Disney to start up a new trilogy of trilogies and ensuring Ford can simply fly around the world and visit new golf courses.
