I really liked Generations so am quite looking forward to more of the same

I never completed Generations but I didn't hate it..  I just got bored of all of the excess requirements to unlock the newer areas.  Would have much preferred beating an area in 2 levels of the same stage type, and being able to move onto the next.  Or at least include those side-missions throughout both levels, as optional parts of the stage.

You pretty much know what you're going to get from 3D Sonic these days, and this looks as though it's going to be delivering the usual roller coaster thrills we're used to. Despite the generally poor reception they receive, I've always gleaned some fun from these games and this looks as though it's delivering the spectacle if nothing else. Will stay tuned.

See, Sonic Generations, while not perfect, did get soemthing right. It gave you the 2D/3D split and worked well for it. 2D for the die hards with remixed levels, and 3d for the new fans, btu it meant people could enjoy both, as the 3d sections could be fun for a bit. If this said did more maybe 60-70% 2D, and the remaidner 3D for the quick bursts, it could work!

Probably won't mind. Roll on Mania.

I think they're trying to please "the fans" in dropping the experimentation of the last few titles and going back to the way things were, but now you've basically got two Sonic games based on nostalgia (given this is an ersatz Generations) with no progression since 2011.

Stick that in an environment where games that are different are being championed (Zelda) and those that are more conventional are being moaned about (Andromeda) and it seems they're going to get a bad reaction.

Out of interest, NEG, I know SEGA have never made a bad Sonic game or whatever, but what would be your ideal new Sonic game? Not in the Mania sense, or whatever it's called, but how would you bring Sonic The Hedgehog into 2017.

Sonic: Breath of the Wild, if you will?

They need to more seamlessly transition between 3D/2.5D gameplay, using a single character.  Generations had two Sonics, and they just split the stages entirely.  I think they need to learn to maintain both of these elements in a single stage.

But this seems to be another generations-type game, since an earlier trailer for it showed the original Sonic as well as modern Sonic. Generations was decent fun, but it had nostalgia on its side and those amazing 2.5D sections.

I feel like this game is also going to have a 2.5D stage, followed by a 3D stage, instead of trying to make them work together cohesively..

You're misremembering, they still had 2.5D stuff in the "modern stages" in Generations

I think that it was Yahtzee or Jim Sterling that said in a video that the problem with Sonic is that they keep trying to "innovate" the forumula rather than focus on what works and possuibly add stuff to that. I would argue the Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 & Knuckles were top tier 2D games, then when Sonic went to 3D they struggled to get it to feel right and just kept throwing shit at it, despite the fact that the Sonic/Shadow stages in Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 were pretty good, camera issues aside. I would have been down for an entrie game of that, but no, they just kept throwing 3 player team combo, alien powerups, mech suit battles and FUCKING "HOT AND COLD" HUNT THE FUCKING KEYS/EMERALDS shit at it. Instead of improving on what worked and adding to that, ala mario, they just keep throwing shit at the dart board in hopes something will stick.

I thought both bits were great.  The 2D ones looked lovely and played close enough to old Sonic games for me, and the 3D bits were short and infrequent enough that they didn't suffer from the problem they have with making a really fast game in good-looking 3D environments (having to add loads of slow-moving filler to cut down on the number of massive levels they have to make).
