Sonic Forces

Why is the music all over the place? Why is the sound mix so dodgy? Why did they think that BWOOP jump effect was any good? Why isn't he insta-rolling when he enters tunnels (1:10)? WHY IS SO MUCH OF THAT STAGE DEVOID OF ANY THREAT (very few enemies, the ones that are there hardly do anything, and platforms crumble down to safe ground anyway (EDIT: okay this might be for alternate routes, but still)?) Even Green Hill was more challenging.

Okay, this might turn out alright, but I hope the other zones  have more going on.

Sonic Team should be worried because I think that there is a real chance a small indie studio with a hobbyist engine is going to make a better Sonic game than they are.

I think the only reason that Sonic Mania isn't getting a physical release is because they know that the public will definitely pick it up over this embarrassing crap.

Destroying enemies looks really off... Like you are punished for doing so and lose momentum.

Yeah, that looks bizarre; the springboards seem to do it as well.

It's so strange that the one thing the old Sonic games had over Mario - how good Sonic's momentum felt to control - is the thing they get so consistently wrong in the new 2d/2.5d games.

Mania is putting that latest trailer to shame indeed. It's very much Generations 2, so half-arsed physics, but with Mania around the corner they don't have an excuse to half-arse 2D Sonic anymore in the so-called 'real' attempts.

The music is also approaching Sonic 4 levels of bad, which is horrifying to think about.

Still, early days and all that.

Bolded for truth, at least when it comes to decisions regarding 2D for the last 10+ years.

This would be worrying for them, but it has already happened multiple times before.

Looks great, just like the originals!

Except, it doesn't at all. Sonic is tiny, the physics are way off, It's either too fast or too boring and slow and the music is dreadful. It's basically a lazy rehash of Sonic Generations.

Not with two competing commercial products. If both were on shop shelves side-by-side I think a lot more people would pick up Mania.

Just watched the video.

Holy shit. Did they not look at that and think perhaps they shouldn't have shown it? The music is awful. There are frame-rate issues. The animation is woeful. The level design is shocking.

Reminds me of this:

Well I for one am glad we waited six years for a follow up to Generations that looks worse.

Things I liked :

The way the grass sways

It's fast

It's colourful so could look lovely especially with HDR

Things I didn't:

Physics are wonky again

The music is absolutely fucking terrible

Why is Sonic so small

Animation looks like it's missing, that part where he just runs in mid air looks dumb. We don't have megadrive limitations any more

Abundance of hidden springs at the end of a clear jump point

Six years why

  • 3 weeks later...

When we jokingly ask how many new friends of Sonic will be introduced in the next game, I don't think anyone was expecting this kind of response. Have as many shit mascots as you like, guys! :)

https://www.destructoid.com/sonic-forces-will-have-customizable-playable-characters-436357.phtml

Quote

As shown in the reveal trailer that's embedded above, these new hero characters can be customized from head to toe. Upper headgear, middle headgear, lower headgear, gloves, footwear, body, bodysuit, and skin color are the categories that we're shown in the video. Although the details can be tweaked, the characters have to be one of seven pre-chosen animals. They are (with their special abilities):

Wolf -- Automatically draws in rings when near them

Rabbit -- Has longer invincible time after receiving damage

Cat -- Keeps one ring after being hit

Dog -- Restarts with five rings after the player dies

Bear -- Blows away enemies with a homing attack

Bird -- Flies high with double jump abilities

Hedgehog -- Collects rings when getting damaged

In addition to their abilities, these heroes also have "wispons" which are essentially unique gadgets that help make up for the fact that they aren't Sonic. Sega calls them "an evolution of the Color Powers from Sonic Colors." The customizable characters are also equipped with a grappling hook. We took a trip to Sega's offices earlier this year and played as a red wolf with a flamethrower.

We've never had wolves or bears. I shall make Yogi the Bear, hopefully rings change into picnic baskets.

My friend noted that to me actually and I took it at face value, I shouldn't have taken his word for it!

Marios momentum is his best thing. No other platformer comes close, including original sonic.
