Sonic Forces

The saddest part is that there are plenty of people that genuinely like this - and prefer this - to anything Sonic Mania has to offer. You only have to read the YouTube comments to see this.

It doesn't look broken or anything, and who am I to judge what people can or cannot like, but it's so painfully average and forgettable. Gameplay seems very similar to Sonic Colors (which I played through recently - also average) but at least that was bright and colorful and a story that although nothing special, was nicely self deprecating.

Sonic Forces can be summed up easily by one line of dialogue:

"Eggman's Forces have chewed through our defenses at Green Hill"

Fucking Hell.

I must have missed that bit.

I thought it was fun and also enjoyed the demo on the PS4. Just not quite sure, over the Avtar game sections.

Other than that its just more Generations/Colors, both of which I enjoyed.

I enjoyed Generations and Colours, the former more than the latter.  The issue with those videos is that there is far too much autonomy - little actual platforming, too much constant destruction and on-rails movement.  It just looks like the interaction is dull.

The only positive I can think about the demo is it’s not dire, the song is mind.

Mania is great and this clearly isn’t going to be anything above mediocre, harsh from a mins play but it certinally looks and feels like a mediocre game - does move at a fair lick tho!

I'll wait for a sale on this. once it's under 15 quid I might get it.

SONIC FORCES - FULL FAMITSU

1st reviewer: This Sonic is aimed for adults with a hype story that opens with a serious development and has allies and enemies throughout the series gathering.

In addition to the hearty high-speed actions on both 3D stages where you go deep and 2D side-scrolling stages, this game has an exclusive fun factor with usage of weapons and a playthrough where you can switch between up to 3 characters.

You can create an Avatar as the player’s personification, and it’s also nice that they can be freely customized. 9

2nd reviewer: The design that retains the deep replay value and challenges while catching up on the exhilarating and speedy feels are amazing, as it allows anyone to feel good when playing it.

You can create your own personification with the Avatar, and having them fight together with Sonic also gives freshness; the actions that use Wispons are also interesting. In stages where Sonic and the Avatar work together, the W.Boost has a pleasant feel in the dash, and the lovely BGMs fit every place and will raise your tension. 9

3rd reviewer: The dramatic [story] development is nice, since it once again recognizes the coolness of Sonic.

The gimmicks that have excellent speedy feels, and the smooth transition from 3D to side-scrolling is also cool. Even in the same area, when the characters and gimmicks change you will feel a different sensation in playing it.

With the Avatar-exclusive weapons you can taste the exhilaration of mowing enemies, and the tricky movement abilities are also interesting.

There is also a variation of costumes. For the Classic Sonic, being able to use the Dash that originated from Sonic Mania is also nice. 9

4th reviewer: By implementing the Avatar Character, it has an uniqueness which is enjoying special movement and attack methods that Sonic doesn’t have.

You can taste a sensation of playing [the game] that’s different from the past series, and the gameplay breadth also got larger.

This game has an impression of getting closer to a straight high-speed action, and you can fully feel the exhilaration even more easily. I don’t deny Sonic’s uniqueness of “becoming complicated due to getting too fast,” but this game is well done to tightly stuff in strategy with the epitome of action. 8

Famitsu is good for news and interviews due to their close links to Japanese publishers but terrible for reviews due to their close links to Japanese publishers.

I think Sonic Forces looks ok. I also enjoyed playing various 3d sonic games over the years, including Generations which this looks quite similar to.

There has been a narrative built online for a year or more that says "Mania = Great, Forces = Trash" so the inevitable outcome of that will be people going out of their way to back that up by overstating flaws.

That game may in fact turn out to be unplayably shit but even if it doesn't and is just ok (as I expect) /on a par with Generations, people will claim it is detestable trash.

Hating 3d sonic games is just a circlejerky opinion on forums, an easy way to show your refined tastes.

While a vocal part of this forum seems to take it as a given that all 3d sonic games are intrinsically shit, Generations has a metacritic score in the high 70s and Colors has a metacritic score of 78.

I enjoy these games because they are cartoony, have good production values, are fast paced, have some great music (Aquarium Park in Colors,  Sea Bottom Segue in Lost World) and are fun to replay and improve your times. I find them to be an enjoyable relaxing experience.

I don't take it as a given, but since Heroes, it has been true.

LA Noire has a Metacritic of 89, so I'm not sure we can put too much faith in those numbers.

(I did quite like Sonic Colors, though)
