Unlocking on steam early access in 4 hours.

http://steamcommunity.com/app/578080/discussions/

The guy made some rather good Arma mods. One of which was battle royale - the basis for this standalone game now using the Unreal engine.

"PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS is a last-man-standing shooter being developed with community feedback. Players must fight to locate weapons and supplies in a massive 8x8 km island to be the lone survivor. This is BATTLE ROYALE."

From what I gather this version will have 100 people at the start. solo, duo and 4 man squad varieties - last man/team standing wins.

The mod was great fun (as are king of the hill and wasteland) but obviously only accessible to arma players which is a fairly small subset of gamers. Arma is a hardcore millsim which puts off a lot of people. Hopefully a standalone game like this can bring the joy to a wider crowd.

Will report back with gameplay impressions later :)

So stuck a good few hours into this and all in all had a blast.

It's early access so it's not perfect and it's quite expensive but it's very well done. The gameplay is good fun. A nice mix between fun and tactics / looting and tension.

I had no problems myself, one player had some issues with the LOD system, one had a brief sound bug and one crashed once. Overall feature rich and pretty polished certainly on the good side of early access rather than the bad.

Games are quite short and can get pretty intense. The dead and your out mechanic really puts you on edge. We played solo, due and group (4 players) and had fun in all of them. If there are more than four of you it's a problem though as 4 is the maximum team size. When you die its good fun spectating your surviving buddies and in solo mode you just quit and go straight back into a fresh starting server.

On our best game we got to 3rd with all four of us alive, but got sandwiched between the other two teams at the end when the zone shrunk right down. So close, so close....

this looks superb, grabbing this tomorrow. Been Playing Escape from Tarkov, and although in a similar vein this seems to have nailed that survival mode so well. Love the idea of trying to win and survive from 100 players.

What's escape from Tarkov like ?

Just had my best solo game , finished 5th. Was intense. Really enjoying this.

ooo nice on the 5th place thing, been having a riot on this, if you fancy a few games lmk mrdavewhite is my steam tag.

Tarkov is absolutely intense, think you'd like it, incredible use of sound and proper white knuckle stuff, best gun handling and sound i've ever experienced, but its not as much fun as Battlegrounds for me.

This is doing rather well!

The PvP shooter raked in over $11 million in its first three days on Steam Early Access..... with over 67k active simultaneous players counted and the current top seller spot on Steam. The game also made a big splash on Twitch, with 150k viewers checking out over 3,600 streams since early access kicked off on March 23rd.

It's incredibly moreish, but getting harder every day as the players improve.... tactics spread virally.  Still haven't won a game yet!  Me and Dr Pepper game 2nd in a duo game.... so close! Argh!

What does this run on btw? I've had my eye on Escape from Tarkov for a while but read that it runs on Unity (which seems to destroy my PC without fail) so I'm trying not to get too excited for that one.

Unreal engine.  There is occasional lag issues, but seems to run pretty well and looks pretty at high settings.

  • 2 weeks later...

I bought this last night and had so much fun that I immediately bought a GTX 1070 so that it'll run better once they've optimised it.  It's brilliant isn't it?  It's unbelievably tense at times, first solo game I finished 7th with 8 kills and was having heart palpitations by the final few minutes.  Haven't been able to get anywhere near that since, mind you.

This post just tipped me over the edge. Consider it bought!

It's very very good.  It's ridiculously rough around the edges at the moment but it's still amazingly good fun, can't wait for the finished article.  Will be up for some games tonight if anyone's around (after I've installed the 1070!).

They're going to be pushing some optimisation updates later this month but it might still run like a dog for a while according to their Dev blog at https://www.playbattlegrounds.com/news/65.pu

Client Optimization

In case you missed it last week, here is a look at our schedule for client optimization. This process will take time, and will not be fixed with a single patch. We ask for your patience as we work to improve performance.

Initial Performance Improvements

Key Objectives

To reduce the overload on the CPU, and make sure that the GPU performs to its full capability

Expected Results

Frame rates will be stable even when in high-density areas

Get higher frame rates across all graphic options

ETA: Apr. 14th (Expected to take roughly 5 weeks)

Further Performance Improvements

Step 1:Art assets optimization (Apr. 7th)

Decrease the LOD vertex for buildings seen at long distances

Decrease the total amount of vertex by adjusting the LOD on terrains

ETA: Apr. 7th

Step 2:Improve the rendering performance of terrain and ocean shader (TBD)

Step 3:Decrease the overload on the CPU by rearranging wall near buildings (TBD)

Step 4:Decrease the usage rate of the video memory (TBD)

@Strategos I keep seeing the old DayZ crew playing this and it's very tempting I must say. How does it compare to those glory days?

Hey Sie. It's got a bit of everything in there really. At the start its all about avoiding people and looting, as the circle contracts it gets more tactical / sneaky. Then at the end its a frantic fire fight. I still get pretty tense playing it even after a tonne of games. Maximum game length is half an hour so when you die it's not the pain of having played for four hours then got shot at the airfield losing all your gear.

There is plenty of frustration but that's tempered by a moreish "one more go" feeling.

It's Arma 'lite' in terms of gameplay. Currently I would say luck is a bit too much of a factor at the very end which can make the final ten annoying if you get caught out by bad circle placement. You can play in duos or squads of four which makes it even more tactical , but also means you have to wait when you die :) Spectating can be good fun though and usually the others aren't too far behind.

It's certainly grabbed nearly everyone out of our group and that hasn't happened for a while.

I'd heartily recommend it as long as you are happy knowing it's a bit un-optimised in places.

Played my first two games. First game I was 40th, killed by the first person I saw. Second game I managed to come 8th, mostly by hiding out. I was killed by the first person I saw.

I imagine with team clusterfuck it would be pretty awesome. Definitely has a bit of the old Day Z vibe, just a lot more fast paced.
