Frances McDormand stars as a mother to a murdered daughter who shames the local police department about their botched investigation with three billboards outside the town of Ebbing, Missouri and antagonises the whole town in the process. Also starring Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell and Peter Dinklage.

 

The cast and trailer give off a Coen brothers vibe.

I remember a few years ago there were (it seemed to me anyway) a spate of articles, everyone claiming this was Sam Rockwell's year/movie that'd push him to super-stardom. I saw them with Confessions of Dangerous Mind, certainly. Each year he'd turn in another great performance, each year more articles. 

 

On the one hand he deserves to be a bigger star, but on the other hand, I think it'd stop him doing the type of stuff he's great in.

Saw this tonight on an Odeon Screen Unseen. What a film. Seriously. It's a contender for my favourite film of the year. It was so tragic and darkly comic at the same time. 

 

Fantastic. Don't miss it when it gets a full release.

Watched it last night at DIFF; great film. Treads the line between tragic and comic very well, boosted by some outstanding performances. McDormand the obvious one of note, but Rockwell does a brilliant job with a tricky character.

They had a trailer for this before the film I just saw, I hate trailers I bet I saw a lot of the main comedic moments. I turned up late to try and avoid them too. Oh well I’m looking forward to seeing it when it’s out.

I loved it but do agree that does verge on the ridiculous, which sometimes does a disservice to the subject matter.

 

I also thought Abbie Cornish was horrendously miscast

Saw this earlier, and whilst I enjoyed it, it seemed a bit all over the place,

Particularly after Woody Harrelson's character died. I didn't really care for the rapist showing up in the shop either, I think it would have been stronger without the foreshadowing. I really liked the ending though - no matter what choice they make, there's no redemption for either of them, and it seems that they've come to accept that.

There were some fantastic performances throughout as well, with the aforementioned Abbie Cornish being the exception. 

 

Well worth a watch, then, but it's not as good as I'd hoped.
