Outland instantly springs to mind. It's Housemarque mashing up Metroid and Amiga era platform adventures with some stylish, minimal graphics. There's Ikaruga style polarity shifting mechanics too. It's a glorious, odd thing.

 

Bangai-O HD is very, very good too and looks stunning.

Braid

Pacman DX

Outrun 2

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Geometry Wars 2

 

and so many more. 

 

The XBLA period was a golden age of gaming really. So many good things in there.

Yeah, this is why I've grabbed about 500gb of them (it was one torrent). There's so much for the retro lover: emulated classics, re releases with extra content tacked on (even if it's just stuff like Final Fight that is the original game with some challenges added), remakes and retro styled new games (retfaux, as I like to call it). There's loads. 

 

Which is why I've asked the question: I really want to separate the wheat from the chaff, the good from the bad, the Limbo from the Tony Hawk's HD.

Score Rush - pure twin-stick bullet hell

all the radiangames stuff - stylish and playable, mainly twin-stick

Infinity Danger - XBLIG remake of the PC shooter Warning Forever

Decimation X3 - bullet-hell Space invaders

1-Finger Death Punch - bonkers

Earthmover - conversion of Spectrum Boulder Dash clone

Leave Home - fixed-length dynamic-difficulty shooter with proper acid soundtrack

Little Racers STREET - superb top-down racer with car customisation

 

There's enough pure arcade goodness there to keep you entertained.

On a long weekend off and fancied a bit of retro. I'm fucked off with this gen and the bullshit 10gb+ patches and so fired up the old 360.

 

Spent today mostly playing OG Sonic, JSR, Afterburner, Virtua Fighter 2 & 4, NiGHTS, Streets of Rage 2, Final Fight. Also purchased Soul Caliber II for something like a quid fifty and still plays so goddamn good. Gaming was the fuckin' best back in the day.

Get yourself the Megadrive collection! Some amazing achievements in that with real gaming rewards!

I really can't get on with the sequel for some reason. I spotted it wasn't even in my list on the 360 so I redownloaded it wondering why... and I've deleted it again. It just seemed to remove the fun and charm that the first had.

Now you you have this new 360 Ste I presume you will use a separate gamer tag on it, and not swap the same one over via USB? Otherwise its ban time once MS see all those torrented games.

It won't, but the gamertag can. What I mean is don't use the same gt across both consoles. If you have achievements and time stamps on your gt for games you haven't paid for that brings trouble.

Under Defeat is brilliant, aye, and the 360 port should be cheap. Akai Katana, one of Cave's last arcade games, also has an excellent and inexpensive PAL port. The 'Shin' or 'Slash' mode on that is one of their best games, imo. You should check out all of the PAL-compatible/region-free Cave ports, really - you can't go wrong with any of those (though SDOJ goes for about £100 now and has significant input lag, so maybe that's not essential right now). RayStorm HD is also a lovely update if you enjoyed the original version, and I'm a big fan of GRev's Strania, another great traditional memoriser (almost like a more forgiving Image Fight), which adds the crutch of melee attacks to deal with tougher enemies, and a nice, simple scoring system involving a multiplier you activate yourself for brief periods. There's also the HD port of Radiant Silvergun, which is the cheapest way to play the game and arguably the best. It removes a little bit of slowdown in places, but it's not enough to make those sections vastly more difficult.

 

Seconding Ginga Force and Omega Five too. The former my favourite shmup from the last decade or so. It has lots of interesting systems interacting with one another, but one of the most impressive things is that it manages to have very customisable ships and boatloads of weapons without any of them feeling useless or superficial. The stages are also broken up into separate 'missions', making them a lot easier to access for practicing. If you can get the double pack with Ginga Force and Eschatos, I'd highly recommend it! Omega Five is a short twin-stick hori memoriser, and a really compelling score-chaser due to its brevity and abundance of ways to squeeze more points out of the stages. It's a real shame this game and some of the others mentioned here haven't been ported to anything outside XBLA - their days are very much numbered, and needn't be.
