The Handmaids Tale - Season 2 Hulu/Sunday Night C4

Recommended Posts

Dunno about a load of shit. With Serena she saw an appetite for rebellion, and after having the baby she wanted to save her other daughter. She's been through a lot of shit and wants to do something about it. She doesn't want her other daughter growing up there.

Good ending I thought. Now if she ends up back with the Waterfords again I will smash everything.

That shot where she looks back up at the camera. Straight up Jedi! :D

Spoiler

But yeah I mean what else is she gonna' do, come back home (Canada) to her husband, hand over the new baby she's had with someone else who she's also in love with and tell him his own daughter is still back in Gilead? Overwrought with guilt for the rest of her life. Eh?

I’m still at CH4 pace and finding it all really tedious. The obvious question is why am I still watching I suppose.

There is too much ‘slow burn’ with tv shows these days. The TV companies have got carried away trying to stretch things out.

Exactly. Her decision made complete sense to me. The whole episode was about the horrific life of females in Gilead; she couldn't just fuck off with her baby and leave her first born trapped inside.

I've only just finished this. Don't think it was as good as series one, but still good. Felt like it dragged a bit in the middle but finished pretty strongly. There were bits that felt a bit off in the various characters' behaviours and decision making at times, but all forgiven for having Bradley Whitford rock up.

We watched the whole of season 2 last week. Perhaps it was because we blasted through two or three episodes a night, it didn't seem to drag at all. I thought it was just as good as S1, which I was surprised by, and I'd be curious to know how much input Margaret Atwood had into the overall story (there were still one or two pieces of dialogue or voiceover that were lifted straight from the book).

The best thing about it all was

Serena's character development as she starts to perceive the cage she's made for herself (and for every other woman, but she's not quite ready for empathy yet).

And somehow Elizabeth Moss can say more in one surly look than most actors manage in a paragraph of dialogue.

After the first series I said it was possibly my favourite TV show of all time, but I've subsequently seen the Leftovers which has stolen the top spot. Ann Dowd knows how to pick roles.

Well this is back. The first three episodes are "out there". I've watched the first two. It remains as unrelentingly grim and humourless as the first two seasons. It's actually verging on self parody now. Elizabeth Moss emotes into camera for what seems like hours at a time while her character makes monumentaly stupid decisions just to string the story line out.

Even bloody Chernobyl had a couple of LOL moments in it. This is just so up it's own arse it's getting to the tiring stage.

I'm not sure I finished the first series, it was too dull.

I finished the first series but that was enough. There's only so much unrelentingly grim despair porn I can take.

I thought the first season actually did have glimpses of humor and levity in it though? Particularly in the protagonist's narration. Didn't watch the second season though, the poor reception put me off and I didn't really want to sully my memories of the first season which was superb.

The second season is fine, it meanders a bit initially but really pulls it round in the second half. Its main problem is that it doesn't do much that's new, it's mostly set in the same place with the same characters. It's got a couple of episodes that are set elsewhere and they're easily the strongest in the season. The challenge of continuing the story past Atwood's original must have been immense and they've played it a bit safe I think.

I hear the third season has a new setting for at least part of its run though so hopefully it'll be able to take a few more risks. Really looking forward to it anyway.

This 3rd season is fucking dogshit. I don’t give a shit about any character anymore. It’s just relentlessly depressing & totally unbelievable.

I don’t think a single thing has happened in the last 2 episodes to advance the story. Patience is running very thin with this show now.

It's turned to self-indulgent tosh. The first season was utterly spellbinding, but it feels so lost now with no way out other than an unlikely Rambo-esque uprising. Perhaps that's the point but the execution is so flawed and lacking in the essential qualities that made the original season so powerful.

I guess I'll slave through to the end of this season.

I’ve no idea why I’m still watching this. Throughout most of each season it meanders and goes nowhere. They’ve got an amazing world and some top talent but it’s just so boring all too often. The rebellion should have moved up a gear long before now.

The last two episodes have been fantastic!

Which episodes? I’ve just watched the last two shown on Channel 4 and they’ve been the same drawn out rubbish. A few seconds of excitement are failing to make up for forty-odd minutes of dull crap.

It’s only because I’ve invested time in the show that I’m sticking with it, but I’m getting ready to throw in the towel. I’m at the point where I don’t really give a crap what happens anymore.

The two that haven’t been on Channel 4 yet. Stick with it!

I’m going to see out this season although if it doesn’t show signs of accelerating the pace I’m out.

My patience has also worn pretty thin, though it does feel like it's about to finally kick into gear in the next episode.

My problem with this is that with the world today I really don't need any more portents of doom - we've had three seasons of miserable shit while watching all manner of crap going on around us - I just want to see Gilead crumble now.

Haven't watched episode 12 yet but 11 was indeed back to its brilliant best.

Shame about the episode in the

Spoiler

Hospital

If that hasn't been shown on channel 4 yet then most of the people in the thread arent going to have a very nice time

That's 3.8 I think? Grim and also strangely boring.

3.10:

Spoiler

"We're going to need a bigger boat" was funny at least .

I’m a bit behind on this - we just watched the

Spoiler

hospital

episode last night, and I thought it was really good! But then I am a sucker for minimalist “theme” episodes of anything, where it’s all set in one room or done in one take or with just one character, so it just pushed my buttons.

I also liked the earlier episode that explored

Spoiler

Aunt Lydia’s

history. Overall I’m finding this series a big improvement on the last.

It would be nice to see a full on rebellion rising, but based on the ending of the last one I watched, it seems June is going to focus more on small scale personal victories (with huge impacts for the people she helps) rather than taking on the entire power structure.

Yeah, I think she's thinking smaller than my preferred approach of the systematic murder of Gilead's men of power, climaxing with the on-screen castration of Frank Waterford.

I'm only sticking with it now to see the times when June gets punished in some way. I think she is bloody horrible.
