Venom (2018) - Boring. Silly. Funny.

He's been an anti hero a fair few times, and an outright hero a couple of times (not when the symbiote was attached to Brock though to my knowledge).

As for doing him solo? Er... Well the smart money would say you don't.

Doing a true Venom movie would suit awkwardly with Marvel's tone, but doing a Venom movie completely unrelated to Spider-Man just... Doesn't feel right. The character evolved away from just bring a Spider-Man nemesis but still. I'd kill for Venom in an MCU that also features a really good Spider-Man, but an R Rated solo version chasing Deadpool/Logan dollars... Hmm.

Plus it's Sony. They are very good at dropping clangers with this stuff.

Even with some brilliant casting.

I'm always fascinated by these projects that scream massive flop from inception. Of course the occasional one surprises and does well. But most of the time it plays out exactly as you imagine it would after hearing the pitch. Surely there was someone sat in the room thinking, this is a really, really dumb idea guys.

Hey studios, for a modest fee I'll happily sit at the back of the board room and offer helpful advice like '$175 million on a Guy Richie King Arthur film? Fuck no!'

It will probably be the Flash Thompson version, where he the suit lets him walk (cos his legs got blown off), but it's slowly turning him mad.

Believe they've confirmed it's Brock.

Let's them go a bit nasty and get that all important Logan mon- sorry, R Rating.

Bearing in mind this comes out in just over a year, supposedly... What's that script going to be like? It's either been rushed together or it's a holdover from the 'Amazing' era. Or older. Which weren't exactly great, bar some of Raimi's stuff.

I reckon you'd get short odds on Hardy walking from this, when it becomes obvious it's a car crash.

I always hated how Venom's mouth splits it's hosts head in half.  If they're going for a R rating, then I'd like to see the Symbiot meshing Brock's face back together in a horrible and painful way when it stops Venoming about.

Shit, I didn't realise Sony still owned Venom. I was hoping we'd get Spidey in the black suit in Infinity War or the next one and then Venom in the next Spider-Man.

Unfortunately Sony have the rights to everything associated with Spider-Man. Including Spidey himself. They've lent Marvel control of Spidey himself, but only temporarily it appears (for Homecoming, Infinity War + sequel and a Homecoming sequel). It appears the deal doesn't give Marvel any say in the associated characters, hence we get this whacky not-Spider-Man Spider-Man villains universe, which I'm sure everyone was desperate for.

I can see why Venom might not fit the MCU, doing him properly with Brock as the host might not fit the tone they've established, but still... Brock Venom without the link to Spider-Man? Ugh.

How will this work without Spidey in the film?

I thought the entire story was 'spidey gets venom' turns into a twat, then tries to kill the symbiote which then gets attached to Brock; passing on all of spider-mans powers.

If Spider-man isn't properly in it then they'd have to give him a new origin story and different powers I assume?

Maybe it'll be like the Netflix Marvel series full of awkward clanging mentions of properties they can't show and there'll talk of that fella in the red pyjamas.

Not just marvel. I watched the first episode of Supergirl the other day and it was the same. "Him", "your/my cousin", "the man in blue" were just some of the weird things said to avoid saying superman.

That really grates in the first few episodes of Supergirl but it disappears around mid - season, wouldn't surprise me if they were told to stay well away from Superman during the first series.

I imagine Batman is very much the same although there have been little nuggets dropped of his existence in both Supergirl and Arrow.

They could do it like the start of the Carnage graphic novel - Brock in a prison cell with Cletus Kasady, talking about how he ended-up in there, maybe with a flashback sequence. Carnage could even be the 'villain', instead of SpiderMan.

That'd be a way better method to set things up. Like it's retrospective and the film goes straight into the action as opposed to making a full on origin story. I always thought that was the way to go with a punisher movie too, but chances of that ever being given the greenlight (film wise) again are zero.

The rule has always been no Superman on TV in recent years as they were focusing on the movie universe. When the films were doing terribly they sort of loosened up, hence the later appearances. Running joke that's quite funny as you always see a different part of Superman's body throughout the 1st season.
