Save your Aeion beam in the last phase. Just pelt him with rockets until he becomes 'invincible' after the final larva recharge and then release the beam on him.

If you need to dodge his 'cinematic' grab: he telegraphs this move by hovering still and raising his hand. Simply space jump to the top of the screen to dodge.

OK. So I left it for a week and decided to go back to it. Managed it on my third attempt! 100 percent with a play time of... 18 hours and 53 minutes. Anyone manage to take longer? :D

Spoiler

I kept using all aeion during the first part of the final phase, but managed to perfect jumping whilst charging the beam and aiming with R whilst falling and shooting.  The charge beam seems to deliver a decent hit and the final phase took no time. Thanks!

Really enjoyed this, despite some frustrations.

My save said 14 hours for 60% but the system records said 23 hours run time. So fuck knows how long I actually played it for.

I was flagging a little towards the end but the last few boss fights kept it interesting. Not a classic but still a good game. It could have done with either more metroid variants or being about 2/3rds the length.

Nicked from gaf, but it looks like the US did right by Metroid, placing it in September's top 10. Hope it's enough for Nintendo's profit margins.

Nintendo Switch games again occupied multiple spots in the list of best-selling individual games of the month, including Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle from Ubisoft at No. 7, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at No. 10 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at No. 11. Also, the Metroid: Samus Returns game for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems debuted at No. 8.

We can't read too much into the Metroid sales anyway - and Nintendo will know that.  I don't have it.  I'd normally have been on it like a tramp on chips... but I've got my switch now and plenty of amazing games to play on it, so I didn't bother.

Now, if Nintendo release a switch version...

Shush. Don't distract them from Metroid Prime for the Switch...

I got this for Christmas, and I'm pleasantly surprised. It's really good! Some minor niggles aside, it's pretty much everything I wanted from a 3DS Metroid game. Classic 2D gameplay, updated with analogue aiming, 3D environments, great use of depth and lots of details in the backgrounds. Sufficiently different from the GB orginal to feel new and interesting, great level design, nice feel to the controls and movement. I love it! :)

I'm up to Area 4 so far, having cleared the

'chase' section, got the Space Jump and defeated a xenomorph-looking Metroid

and it's getting pretty challenging now. Long, too! Doesn't dole out abilities too rapidly, and leaves you guessing in a few places.

Honestly, aside from a few minor things and a lack of true originality, I think it's pretty damned great so far. Such a shame Nintendo is discontinuing the 3DS - stereoscopy adds so much to games like this. :(

They're not discontinuing the 3DS are they? I'm sure they've just recently said they'll be supporting throughout this year at least.

All 3D models discontinued in Europe, apparently. All 2D variations still in production.

I think this was underrated and it’ll probably go in my top 5 of 2017 in the Rllmuk vote.

Problem is, I expected it to possibly crop up in a few lists for 2017’s most disappointing as well, but it seems to have largely been forgotten about, no matter the category.

I liked it a tonne, though. The weekend and a bit that I spent completely immersed in it included a next-level pissing wet rainy Sunday. To spend that entire day just descending ever deeper into the caves and catacombs of SR-388 was actual gaming bliss.

It makes me sad that I haven't played this - I hope it gets re-released on the switch.

I found it pretty mediocre, to be honest. Map wasn't all that memorable, and the constant use of a timed melee attack did my head it. :( Play Axiom Verge or another indie Metroidvania on your Switch instead and you've played a game at least as good, if not actually better.

I played Axiom Verge and occasional frustratingly repeatable crash bug and the bit when you had to use the stasis thing on the pink pool of goo to progress aside, I thought it was brilliant.

Flawed game as it it, AV is loads better than Metroid: Samus Returns. :)

Started playing this tonight after picking it up on the cheap a few weeks ago. First impressions after 40 minutes are strong. The movement feels very fluid, for want of a better word and the classic metroidvania exploration and gameplay is as satisfying as ever. So far I'm enjoying the combat mechanics, too.

It's a bit sad to think that this will likely be the last game I'll ever buy for my 3DS, though :(
