I don't understand the worry over the dev? They seem very capable. The Castlevania they rebooted was well received wasn't it? I enjoyed the 3ds version as well. What's the issue?

Their last castlevania game nearly unravelled all their hard work and was awful. I guess it's like Hollywood. You're only as good as your last game.

It wasn't awful, it was bloody brilliant. Not as good as the GBA/DS Castlevanias, sure, but very little is.

You what mate?

are we talking about the same shitty sequel on Xbox and PS3?

No, the awesome 3DS one.

Yeah, no.

I mostly worry about level design. Zero Mission is a Rubik's Cube of delight in the routes you can take.

Other M shows what happens when you emphasise combat over abilities and level design. MercurySteam is a dev with level design as subtle as a bag of bricks.

Base on the trailer this will be Other M 2D. Fitting for a TRoS remake, but holy crap am I happy that I still have AM2R on a drive. Nintendo should've hired those fans. Or Drinkbox. Or Tom Happ. Or any number of people that understand Metroid, rather than see a cool chick in a cool space suit fighting cool aliens with cool weapons.

And to think MP4 is in the hands of Mr. Federation Force...

Tell me it isn't... ?

Oh god you didn't know? Retro is out for MP4. Tanabe is handling the game in Japan. The guy who removed all sequence breaks from Trilogy. The guy who directed Federation Force. The guy who advised on Corruption.

Prime is pretty much dead unless they find a crack dev team that is willing to counter his every move. Unless you like Zelda in Space. In which case: congrats.

It'll probably end up similar to Fusion with too much story and a map that leads you around by the nose instead of the sparse Zero Mission. I'm optimistic but we haven't had a new 2D Metroid for 14 years so who knows how this will turn out. Looking back it's crazy how we got Prime, Fusion, Echoes and Zero Mission so close together, Nintendo's output during the GC/GBA days was incredible when it came to their old franchises.

Tough crowd.

If I wanted to play wih Smash Bros. Samus, I'd play Smash Bros. But I guess this is now the only Samus audiences know of. I've officially outgrown the IP I think.

3D also makes modular and thus intrinsically patterned level design difficult, which usually leads to overtly signposting secrets. It's what took all the mystery out of Ocarina of Time and will most likely neuter M:SR. Fusion mixed intense combat into the ability maze. This so far just emphasises combat in the trailer with no secrets and minimal ability employment. Which is excatly the uneasy feeling Other M generated.

Hopefully it goes down the Shadow Complex route, but I fear the weird Castlevania's 2D God of War ideas will leave their mark. The counter move alone seems to confirm this. Oh damn, please don't give Samus CV's instantly boring finisher animations.

God, why am I fan of this particular series...?

I'm, sadly, with Cyhwuhx on this. MercurySteam's 3DS Castlevania was fine as a generic 2D hack & slash, but one of the worst Castlevanias I've played outside of the N64 horrors and, er, MercurySteam's other Castlevania games. Combined with the footage shown emphasising combat rather than exploration and I'm doubly wary.

It doesn't help that I also happen to think that the art style is drab (and this is coming from someone who thought the saving grace of MercurySteam's first two Castlevania games was the fact they were real lookers); none of the oppressiveness or alien mystery coming through that I expected.

I'll not write it off on preview footage and developer alone, and I really want to see a new entry in Nintendo's greatest series that lives up to its heritage, but I'm worried.

 Holy crap, get a grip dude! You're writing MP4 off based on Tanabe being its Producer? Fuck, I'm not a fan of Producers' at the best of times but to suggest his presence immediately voids the whole project is pretty funny. How about we hear a little more about it when the time comes before consigning it to the bin.

To be fair, aside from Zero Mission, Cy has barely enjoyed a Metroid game since Super.

I'd also consider myself a big fan of the Metroid series and I'm absolutely ecstatic that we're not only getting Prime 4 but this too. I can't imagine being so negative and down about them both. I mean we know nothing at all about Prime 4 aside from who is producing! At least give them a chance!

Gameinformer: Samus Looks And Feels Great On 3DS

Quote

The game feels fantastic. Holding down the left trigger plants Samus' feet so she can aim in any direction and the X button performs a melee attack that can counter enemy attacks. The prompts to counter are clearly broadcasted with audio and visual cues, and though I missed the first few prompts, it did not take long to block and blast nearly every enemy that I attacked.

As I mentioned before, I did not want to stop playing. The game plays smoothly, the new counter mechanic feels great, and the ability to to scan the environment will hopefully help reduce those moments where you are exploring aimlessly without clear direction.

:omg:

Put me in the camp that isn't to enthused about Mercury Steam doing this. However, Sakamoto and co. being a part of this may cause two negatives to balance each other out and stil create something special. Looking at the stream footage this looks to retain the speed of Zero Mission at least. Other M 2D or Metroid: Mirror of Fate this looks to be not.

I remember the counter move in Castlevania to be more of a quicktime event type of thing. The counter move in Return of Samus looks to be a pretty core and well integrated part of the gameplay. An actual move that you can use, mix with others and take advantage of rather then a context sensetive type of thing.

The footage shown so far reminds me more of Shadow Complex, i'd suggest you'd ignore the trailer and watch the gameplay demo. It looks pretty good.
