I guess I meant to criticise the effects of the alchemy, yeah. Can't you brew a potion that allows you to see in the dark for 10 or something? Seems suspect to scream "historical accuracy" for some mechanics but not for others.

I think there's a big difference in expectation between historical accuracy, realism and how those things would or could be successfully applied to make an enjoyable game. The lead guy himself may well have said differently, but I had a read through the kickstarter page and the website for the game and it doesn't really make much claim to be something that was ever striving to be a 100% accurate representation of existence at the time from a gameplay point of view, just that it will be more grounded in what could have been a depiction of how things were more than most.  Like I said, I don't know if more was promised outside of this but ultimately it's a still just a videogame rather than a documentary so if some things are applied realistically and some not then that's up to whoever makes the game to do it however they want.

This is the same mistake many here have made and I don't know why. The racist choices in the game have nothing to do with realism when it comes to mechanics, you can't use this argument, there are different things. You can't say, for example, "why on earth does Nathan Drakes' health recharges? It ruins the immersion when you see how lifelike the characters are." That's not an argument that stands. You can attack the game's historic "realism" by using proper historical arguments, as it has been done in this thread, and by doing so the game's racist views on some historical elements have become clear.

Why is it possible to buy a brand new armor as a son of a blacksmith? Why is it possible to mix with nobility and influence events as a peasant? Why doesn't the game have permanent death? Why do you magically heal? Why are sword wounds unrealistic? Why are distances unrealistic?

You can practically say hundrends of things to counter the "historical realism" if you compare it with game mechanics. It's an argument that makes little sense.

Of course, yeah 100%. It's always up to whoever makes the game as to what they want to put in it, and that should never change. Definitely wouldn't like to stifle anyone's creative freedom :). It was just the hypocrisy of the aggressive outlash at anyone who dared suggest non-white people in their game might not be a terrible idea, compared to them green lighting the inclusion of magical potions. Made me even more wary about the motives of the former.

Anyway, this thread has definitely had its moments, but I've just read the utter shitshow that it the EG comments of the review and it made me appreciate rllmuk exists . I think overall (despite a couple of examples) most people have discussed the issues openly and respectfully, which is pretty cool. As for the rest of the Internet, I wish so much that people would understand that criticism and censorship (or saying something is wholly "bad", or saying people shouldn't enjoy it, or saying it shouldn't exist, or that it *has* to change, etc) aren't the same thing.

Exactly.  I also learnt a great deal about history on that area by reading posts here and that prompted me into doing research on my own. I think the entire debate, more or less, has been really good.

So today's patch is 26GB and contains "free dlc" apparently. I haven't played this game in one month give or take, but I'm looking forward to getting back into it.

It was a proper medieval bromance with you walking off into the sunset with best bud ricky from the kaiser chiefs.

Haha, i think it was more due to the fact it felt unfinished and unresolved. Will definitely be picking up a sequel if they do make one. Loved it.

I've had to put it down as i'm up and down the hospital at the moment but I was genuinely loving the game. It had quirks and issues for sure but when I think back to games growing up they could be some of the best and most funny moments :)

That said I will be coming back to it after my house move hopefully and will be able to see how it's improved (there seem to have been quite a few updates for this since it was released)

I need to complete this - currently on sale on XB if anyone is interested (they've nerfed / improved lock pick, save and quit etc etc).  Can't say I saw any of the really funny blooper real stuff or major bugs, but most of my time was spent helping my old undeserving mates, preaching sermons, helping out the "miracle man" and becoming a master thief, inter alia.

I've just gotten back in as I never completed it. The last time I played it I progressed too quickly and when I got the vipers nest mission I wasn't skilled enough at sword fighting. I started a whole new game and reached about level 12 and by god....I hate the lockpicking in this game. Other than that I just love the feel of this game, its like Medieval Shenmue.

I've just started this and while it's certainly no elder scrolls, not even close, it's ok. I'm wondering did they employ a psychopath to design the lockpicking part?

Any help on this please, it's absolutely fucking moronic that it got passed the testing phase.

1.18 I think it is now, was playing without a patch an it just forced an update tonight. Still fucking terrible though, and zero fun whatsoever. I broke all of the lockpicks because the lockpicking was design by a cunt.

That's brilliant advice BUT the first thing everyone should do is...

Go to OPTIONS>GAME SETTINGS and scroll down to change Lockpicking from Original to Simplified.

This let's you use LB (playing on xbox one) instead of left stick to turn the lock. You then just gotta keep the ball gold as it turns around, fucking shit loads easier...

By the way this game is quietly blowing my mind in almost every aspect.

I'm totally immersed in it, reminding me of Morrowind and Oblivion with a little of Witcher 3 mixed in. Sure, it's a bit rough around the edges but it's still doing loads of things brilliantly :D

EDIT: Also when cheesing the chest at the mill that relocks itself remember to stay crouched as it will level up stealth as well as lock picking 8-)

lockpicking will also get a hell of a lot easier the more you level it, same as the bloody bow

I've still been playing away at this and think the main story arc is coming to an end.

It hasn't outstayed it's welcome yet and I've been doing every side quest I can find while ignoring most of the 'Activities' unless I need to use them to level up a certain stat.

I can now safely say that I highly recommend this, as long as you are willing to put in a little bit of effort and have a lot of patience (for levelling up basic skills/loading screens/glitches) for the first couple of hours. :)

One personal gripe though: A lot of the Xbox Achievements aren't unlocking for stuff that I have plainly done, this is particularly annoying as I'm a bit of a cheevo whore and some of the quest/story related ones sent me hours out of my way just to hunt the achievement when I could have completed the quest in minutes using other methods but, hey-ho, it's still a great game and any self respecting RPG fan would be a fool to let it pass by unplayed... :hat:

I just finished the whole Monastery series of quests as part of the main storyline and wow, that has got to be one of the biggest game design missteps I've ever experienced. :o

I managed to complete all the side quests but only after a few reloads and what seemed like hours of watching loading screens for either sleeping or waiting. This totally killed the momentum of the story and I wouldn't be surprised if many players gave up at this point.

Anyway, onwards to what appears to be the final quest, carrying the hope that it ends on a high after that whole debacle -_-

I never managed to finish this game because I suck at sword fighting

Yea everyone sucks at sword fighting in the early game mainly because (like Oblivion) you have to use/practise abilities to get better at them.

There are blocks, parries & ripostes and various combos for all weapons tucked away in there but you have to play as far as Rattay town/Castle where you can train with captain Bernard in all weapon types unlocking all of the above with no danger of dying or wasting hours of gameplay time.

Give it another shot to see what I mean... :hat:

Playing this at the moment and loving it.  I've been pleasantly surprised at the quality of the voice acting.  I was expecting something a lot more 'janky' than it actually is.

I've got a few mods enabled:-

- Skip lock picking if you are of the required level

- Aiming reticle enabled when using the bow

- Enhanced graphic options

- Save anywhere

- Camping mod

I'm finding it really enjoyable setting myself a task for the day (explore there, carry out a quest there etc) with the aim of finding an inn (or a camping spot) during the evening and then waking for some food and a visit to the bath-house... then find something else to do the next day.  Immersion levels are pretty high in this game.

Combat seems tricky, but I've just unlocked a couple of perks (a short sword combo, and a clinch perk) so I'm hoping that improves.  I understand the basics, but I need to pick up a decent sword and shield.  I don't have a shield at all at the moment, and only have a hunters sword.  Some decent armour would also be good at some stage.  Can I go back to Rattay and practice combat there?  Might have to set this as one of my daily tasks.

Glad you're enjoying it davejm and I wholly agree about the immersion levels being high:)

As Rubber Johnny says its a good idea to do all the weapons training at Rattay, that clinch perk you mentioned is really useful and you can spam win a lot of 1v1 fights with it, just rush them to initiate a clinch, spam the button then, when they're stunned, get in a few free stabs/bashes or a combo. I'd also recommend doing the little archery contest there under an archway every now and again as it will slowly raise your archery skill even if you lose, which will help in hunting quests and camp raids later on.

As for getting decent weapons, shields and armour you could always go exploring woods at night (especially near the little billows of smoke on the map) and try stealth attacking bandit camps to get all their gear, or, steal from Rattay barracks when everyone is sleeping

I'm glad to see it getting a bit of appreciation and keep us updated on your adventures sure, good luck out there :hat:

@GavinI've managed to find some armour by following one of the treasure maps.  Got a whole heap of cash, and some decent gear! :)  Just arrived back in Rattay now after venturing off to learn to read, and after a 'dance with the devil' ;)  Gonna check out the Rattay tournaments (I failed it first time around as I ran off courting!) but I noticed it's back on again which is cool.

This game sure is a looker...
