Gran Turismo Sport | Monday Night Racing Club: every week @ 8PM UK

Guys, I sent in some feedback that was read out this week on “The Computer Game Show podcast” specifically about the PS5 reveal as they discussed it the previous week and were wondering if there was anyone bothered about Gran Turismo any more.

To be fair none of them are really racing game fans, so I pointed out that even though GT Sport didn’t review well it sold 8m copies and it’s a game that only works with the big community it’s built up, which a review before launch wouldn’t uncover.

Also got a plug in for this thread as an example of its popularity, and our Monday Night Race Club - the hosts all are on RLLMUK.
Seemed to get the point across until at the end of the conversation they reckoned that Project Cars was a bigger deal on console and that there was a bigger buzz for PC3.... oh well

If you really want to get into it, watch with earphones. Jenson's audio is hard left, morcs is hard right.

Notes on my methodology:

This is from the 2019 Super GT round 2 which was a 500km race.

The fastest lap of the race was actually by Button's teammate Naoki Yamamoto in the same car. It was a 1:29.709. I just picked Jenson because we gaijin all know his face, not to detract from Yamamoto-san.

They don't have any success ballast for this race (unlike the second Fuji leg, round 5, by which time they were carrying extra weight and the car was almost 2 seconds slower).

I didn't have full timings available so I don't know which lap was Jenson's fastest, and honestly I didn't spend a lot of time picking this particular lap.

I just scrubbed through Jenson's stint until I found a lap that started and ended at just about the right place.

It's a few laps in, so the tyres are still relatively fresh and have had time to heat up, but the car is fat with fuel.

And yes Button has a bit of traffic (particularly a LEON Racing AMG) but it doesn't give him any real trouble, and anyway morcs is already ahead before Jenson meets his first car.

So now you know :)

I'm always surprised how diddy LMP (Gr1) are compared to GTs. I think your brain just sort of assumes they're about the same or bigger.

I definitely prefer Gr3/2 because it feels like you're always driving either side of the limit, sometimes a bit over it, which is super exciting. Whereas in Gr1 you're just trying to always stay within the limit because they're too snappy if you go too far.

Yeah this was even more stark in the Virtual LeMans where the Oreca 07s were absolutely dwarfed.

Did we reach a consensus on the next endurance race?  I believe the suggestions (here and in the PSN chat) were something like:

  • Red Bull in Red Bulls (I'm assuming the Juniors, since they're 'only' 350k credits compared to the full-fat versions which are 3 million a pop)
  • Brands Hatch GP in F-1500s (GP length, grid start, no refuelling, just tyre stops, with an MX-5 support race) (@beenabadbunny just likes Brands, and had given it thought :))
  • Monza (in anything, I guess... Noble suggested the no chicane version for some 'mega slipstream fun')
  • Nurburgring in Gr4s (we've already done this once)
    • or in randomly assigned German Gr3s so that everyone doesn't just take the Porsche
  • Catalunya in the Merc F1
  • NOT Bathurst :)

Did I miss any?

You forgot my earnest request for anywhere except Bathurst.

Oh come on!

bathurst is amazing, just put the laps in and reap the rewards! Makes you a better driver I reckon.

Just go easy down the mountain! feels incredible when you go over that quickly. Two epic straights as well.

The 12hrs at Bathurst has some of the best gt3 racing I’ve ever seen. Pinnacle motor sport event imo. Right up there.

Bathurst is like burpees then. Yes it might make you better but it’s damn sucks from start to end.

Nah cos it’ll suddenly click and then it’s fun! Burpees can never be fun!

... I’m never gonna change anyone’s mind am I.

Bathurst is a great track . I used to hate it but it’s one of my favourites now

My first experience with Bathurst was akin to being fisted with an iron gauntlet without any lube, but... I’m up for giving it a chance. I ended up liking Fuji after all!

Yeah but that’s because Fuji is a cool track. Bathurst is just the Rally Monte Carlo in a GT3

Of the above list, the Merc F1 car is 2mill, so if we are trying to keep budgets down in the short term, perhaps leave that one for a while later.

Other than that, I like all of suggestions, very much including ‘not Bathurst!’

Also the Merc F1 is the most disappointing car in the game. Horrible to drive imo.

See I love it! It feels like it's practically driving itself.

I've mentioned before but it's the only car in which I've managed a sub-6-minute clean lap of the Nordschleife. And there's a lot more pace in it, I reckon it could get down closer to 5 with a better pilot.

Did someone in the chat on Monday night say that it was awful at first and they changed it in a patch?

Bathurst is an odd fish.  I'd written it off earlier in the week as a lost cause, with a 2:10.something and seemingly nowhere to improve, but a few sessions later I'm down to a low 2:05.  If you give it a chance it seems to be a track where you'll unlock a tenth here and there every lap, and when you hook up the last fiddly corner (the Elbow?) it's like you've got rocket boosters for the straight.  Pretty good (clean) races too, though I'm not sure I like the fact my half-decent qualy time has me up against A and S class drivers in some races!

Bathurst punishes you for overdriving. Think that’s why people get frustrated. You have to let the cars momentum do it’s thing and a weirdly a light touch on the brakes as you crest the hill is crucial.

You give it 50% brakes down to 25%  before some heavy braking as you try to take that initial downhill bit. once I got that I started to just let the car roll down instead of trying to force it.

that’s what makes getting on the power for the second straight feel so good.

Well I’m only 8 seconds a lap down now

Last week’s Daily race time trialling results. If you don’t know already we do our own unofficial Time trials each week using the Daily race qualifying friend rankings. I know we’ve got a few new people interested lately and it must be confusing if not explained.

 Anyway, onto the results

Race A. Not much fun really. how they included the 240z but made it boring is an achievement in itself
