Devil May Cry

I'd been considering getting this game for ages, but never really got around to it... so when I saw this the other week for the princely sum of £5.99 I couldn't really resist.

So yeah, just finished it. And I bloody loved it.

Thing is, I can't actually put my finger on why it's so good- some of the puzzles are rather lame, and you seem to fight the same bosses over and over again (ok, so not much has changed in two years- PN03 did exactly the same) - but it's all done with such style you can't help but be intruiged. Coolest-looking game ever? Yo' damn right. Looks like Ico with guns and fire.

One of the things I especially like about it is the lack of typical gaming 'restrictions'- I mean, you can fire a grenade against a nearby wall and not get hurt. And smash shotgun shells into those stupid monkey things' heads all day if you wish, thanks to unlimited ammo. And you don't have to come up for 'air' in the (admittedly not great) underwater sections. Ok, so these features are not what you'd call 'realistic', but realism is boring. Says me. By making these parts more forgiving, it's made the game so much more enjoyable as you can concentrate on the 'fun' parts, instead of conserving ammo or trying to avoid drowning.

Just interested to know others' thoughts on it, really. Probably been done already, but humour me. Oh, go on.

(Also, is the sequel really that much worse than the original?)

If only it was gritty and realistic

had it, get so far and thought it was getting a bit repetitive. (or i died and the save point was a mile back) then never bothered. i think having onimusha at the time might also might have something to do with it.

Devil May Cry > Onimusha

Devil May Cry >= Onimusha 2

NTSC > PAL

Getting stuck in Devil May Cry < Weak

I got stuck on the level where you fight the lava spider when it's in the castle.

By stuck I mean I did the level once, died at the boss (about 2 hits from killing it), then decided that the level was too long to do a second time. And I don't have the game anymore.

Up until then it was pretty tops though.

DMC 2 is so easy it's unbelievable. Even a cack-handed player like me can get through both discs in a day.

I played it, and loved it... Reached the kingsized Owl on the boat, and couldn't be bothered to play any further... That owl is a beeyotch ! :D

Was I nearly there?

Got stuck at the Big Owl on the Ghostship. Tried it a couple of times and just couldn't get him. Haven't played it for ages now, so I'll have a hard time picking it up again. But up until there, I loved the game. There's few games that give the same amount of adrenaline and satisfaction while you jump around like a flea on steroids while shooting, kicking and slicing the living shit out of every creature in the vicinity.

Are you talking about the Griffon? I've not ever seen a big owl in that game. You equip your guns and Ifrit then run to the front of the ship and keep firing tll your devil tringer is on and then use that meteor attack and then shoot, lots, and roll if you're going to get hit.

It's one of those "RRRARGGHHH!" moments, but it's relatively easy. I can't see anyone who has trouble with it actually getting past Nightmare (that was the name of the oil-slick boss, right?).

In fact I think it was the oil slick I got stuck at, not the lava spider.

The level where you get that piece of crap beta laser gun that bounces off walls.

It's a secret. Shh.

It's also a lot of fun, and one of the most satisfyingly bizarre weapons in the game.

Naw, it's useless. Eats up your DT, which is what you want to keep powered up while using another weapon (eg, the pistols, which are, frankly the only weapon the game needed).

What are you talking about, I cleared DMC, you didn't get past the 2nd lava spider bit!
