Dodge and run are on the same button. To run you hold, to dodge you have to press and release. I don't think this is a very fluid choice.

5. Halo: Combat Evolved

Yet another stalwart in the top 10, the venerable Halo keeps its place in the top 5 - no mean feat. Sequels have come and gone, most of which have been truly excellent games, but there was some arcane lighting in a bottle going on with the first in the series that has never ever been properly caught again. Some would argue even when they tried to remake it as slavishly as possible it still didn’t “feel” the same. It’s a truly remarkable artifact in the gaming landscape, and we may be waiting a long time to see something with the same impact again.

 

“Ah Halo. Though I didn’t get into the sequels much, I think that was partly down to the fact that the campaign mode in the original Halo did everything so well, and felt so absolutely right, that none of the other entries in the series have ever matched it since.

 

Even ignoring the many gameplay elements it used that have been copied endlessly since: recharging shields, two weapon restriction, co-op campaign play, Halo managed to somehow just get every element of the whole game working so deliciously and perfectly together that it was one of the most addictive games ever made, even in single player.

 

The way the enemies interacted with the player was something that had never been done to such an incredibly emergent extent before, and it’s still possible to play the game today and be surprised at how they interact and respond to various threats and situation. Every single combat encounter would unfold in new and surprising ways, often no matter how many times you restarted a section or played through the game again.

 

And play through it again and again you would, because the sheer unbelievable brilliance of levels like The Silent Cartographer was enough to keep you coming back to it, and the desire to become a god at combat despite the unpredictable nature of every firefight was a strongly addictive brew that made the game seem to posses some sort of diabolical infinite longevity, such were the imagined possibilities.

 

And it didn’t stop there - the multiplayer mode allowed for 4 player fps gaming on consoles with a compulsion not seen since Goldeneye, and while subsequent entries in the Halo series may have improved upon this aspect (while losing perhaps a lot of the single player appeal), no-one can forget their matches in the original game. These were battles fought with the skill acquired through hundreds of campaign mode hours, which could only have happened due to the sheer quality oozing from every pore of the package.

 

The greatest First Person Shoot-em-up ever made.”

 

A sentiment echoed by many:

I don't care about the multiplayer at all, so I'm judging purely by single-player. And for single-player FPS games, Halo CE is the one.”

A question for those that know: is the remastered version of Halo in the Master Chief Collection actually the definitive version, or does the argument it doesn't quite feel the same hold weight? I've not actually played the remaster myself but remember reading a few rumblings about it so mentioned it in the writeup.

Personally I didn’t like the look of the remaster and my recent play through was in original gfx mode.

Is it mechanically identical otherwise? Though I have to admit so much of the feel of the original comes through in the visual design it feels like the slightest nudge could ruin it.

I don't mind the Anniversary edition at all, it performs better and even in original graphics mode it looks way better on a modern telly than the original obviously. That goes double if you only had access to the pal version back in the OG Xbox days. The weirdest thing about the new graphics is that the new textures don't always line up properly, so you might hit a corner of a wall that's not visible or shoot straight through another corner because it's not there in the original. Anyway, I prefer the somewhat abstract look of the original so my yearly CE playthrough is nowadays on Anniversary using the original graphics. And it's always sublimely brilliant.

4. Super Mario Galaxy

And with a triumphant Wahoo! Galaxy has taken the place of its evergreen grandparent. Will the end of this October cause an upset in the realm of Mario dominance in our hearts, and add another contender? We will see.

 

“Joy. In gaming, if there is one feeling that that any developer can feel proud for eliciting from player, it is that. And Super Mario Galaxy might well be one of the most joyful games ever created.

 

It seems almost absurd that one game can contain so many moments of pure and unadulterated genius, and is even more absurd considering it’s not just that these moments represent the game’s high points, like you would expect in so many titles, but that they make up the very bedrock of the entire package. Packed full of such excellence, such wonder, and executed with such assuredness and confidence, that the small moments of brilliance scattered throughout each level become almost passe, such is the assault the game unleashes on your amygdala.

 

Superficially similar in terms of control scheme to older 3D Mario titles, but refined in just the right way and with just the right tweaks to make controlling the game an absolute pleasure once again. Playing Super Mario Galaxy after other platforming titles feels like coming home. And for those that have not played Mario titles before, how I envy what would be their first steps with such a gateway into Nintendo’s wonders.

 

People talk a lot about games eliciting real emotions from players, and whether they can tell stories that are good enough or affecting enough to make people feel them genuinely, but Super Mario Galaxy can bring tears to the eyes, purely through the medium of happy, joyful play.

 

The sweeping orchestral score is also perhaps one of the finest and most rousing ever composed for a game, and suits it perfectly.”

Not quite as pure as 64, but still an absolute masterpiece of a game - will Odyssey manage to better these two next time round though?”

EDIT: it was surprisingly hard to find decent pictures of Mario Galaxy. It's one of those games that really comes alive in motion.
