A question for those that know: is the remastered version of Halo in the Master Chief Collection actually the definitive version, or does the argument it doesn't quite feel the same hold weight? I've not actually played the remaster myself but remember reading a few rumblings about it so mentioned it in the writeup.

Earlier this year, Digital Foundry Retro did a video comparing the different versions. His final ranking in terms of performance:

1. Master Chief Collection - Xbox One

2. Original Xbox version

3. PC port

4. Original played on Xbox 360 via backwards compatibility

5. Anniversary on Xbox 360

(Omitted: Mac port, PAL version in 50Hz, PAL version in 60Hz, PAL version via Xbox 360 backwards compatibility...)

The thing about forza games is that, once you’re off the first in a new generation (which for both the 360 and Bone versions were a bit light), you may as well just play the latest Horizon and the latest Motorsport, whichever they may be. There will be more content (cars, tracks).

The earlier ones don’t age as well, so you shouldn’t really be putting them on your Play Today list.

Dodge and run are on the same button. To run you hold, to dodge you have to press and release. I don't think this is a very fluid choice.

I haven't played Bloodborne, but the Batman Arkham games also had run and dodge on the same button. It worked, but it felt like the developers made that decision because they were running out of buttons, rather than because they're two commands that naturally fit together.

I much prefer the first Horizon. I don't like the lack of focus on the later games, it feels too scattered. I prefer the on road racing and tighter event design.

I loooooove Jet Set Radio but it's fucking terrible nowadays. It has not aged well. The camera and controls are murder. I still play it though.

I played a bit of it on DC - I even picked up the Vita release - but I rarely get on with timed missions in open-world games, and even though JSR's "open world" is quite small I still struggled to like the format. Failing something by seconds because you found all of the tag spots but didn't use the optimal route between them was crap, and the camera didn't help.

I still prefer Future more (it was in the also-rans of my vote) but even that has camera problems and a few dodgy missions. :P

You see, back on Christmas '92 I was seriously upset that my mum went and got me the Super Scope 6 pack instead of the SMW standard with two controllers. At that point I learned how to put a fake smile on my face when it was necessary in order not to upset or offend others.

Seeing SMW in the #3 spot today makes me feel slightly better at being a little bit of an entitled prick back on that fateful day. At least I still ended up with F-Zero, so there was some salvage at least. But... nngggghh!!! That could have been the best Christmas ever!!!

I love SMW but didn’t play it until a few years later, I had a master system and wanted a Megadrive and even when we went into John Lewis to find no stock and the assistant telling me “we have the new Super Nintendo out with a Mario game” I waited for the Megadrive with a “you wot m8, super who”

When I did get a Snes a while later due to peer pressure and played SMW it pretty much opens an entire genre to me, it was so much better than any platform game I have ever played and incredibly that almost holds true to this day

Oh SMW. I thought you were alluding to Odyssey maybe becoming the greatest Mario game earlier. I wish I could click with a lot of the sprite based stuff from back in the day but I jumped from being mildly interested in my VCS to full blown Video-game obsessive due to the arrival of the PS1 and 3D games. I used to play the odd bit of Sonic on the MD at a house we'd go back to after a chemical night out. Perhaps I should give Mania a punt when I get my Switch.

But you have played SMW, right?

I’ve never completed it, and it doesn’t thrill me in the way that Galaxy did (or disappoint me in the way Sunshine did), but it’s still the greatest 2d platformer.

I'd certainly rate World above Sonic 1, but I don't think the gameplay between the series is comparable overall. It's like saying Simpsons vs South Park. Both are amazing for different reasons, despite both being animated shows. Just a matter of taste at that point.

Spoiler

Sonic 1 MS beats World for me however, but that's mainly due to being the first game I played!

I remember arguing with all the cool kids at school in regards to SMW being better than Sonic. Similarly with SF2 vs. MK.

FWIW I'd rate World over anything Sonic related. I'd rate SMB3 over anything Sonic related - even the almighty Mania.

Have you played Dark Souls though? It makes other games obsolete.

I've played it, thanks to the GWG offer, but I barely got anywhere. I know that I'm the problem - it's the 8th greatest game of our time, after all - it's just that I rarely feel inspired to persevere.

I'll have done the first level via emulation or something over the years but I really believe you had to be a player of sprite based games on or around that era to properly appreciate them. I mean I'll trial and error for hours with a tough 3D game but after dying several times in sprite based games I just think fuck it, I'm not good enough and power them off. Makes me a bit sad that my favourite pass time has so many obviously brilliant games that mean so much to people that just don't click with me. Maybe they're too hard for someone like me who basically skipped that whole era (bar combat and pac man on VCS).

I keep trying though, just bought some of the mid 90s platform games,  Metal Slug complete, Mega Man collection, CV SOTN etc.
