so you lot have never experienced system link then? Just remove the HUD and there ya go a screenshot.

tits.

It was more an expression of how a slightly indifferent shot of Halo 2's multiplayer manages to rouse interest, despite its lack of anything, regrdless of its rather excellent looking non-gameplay graphics. Not that I'm at all guilty of extolling the virtues of titles which titillate my interest most....

What makes you think that isn't in-game graphics?

I'd quite easily imagine that's how it looks. I mean, look closely at the screenshot, it's nothing special. Bland textures, ugly blue colour and pretty basic lighting effects.

If they weren't gonna use in-game graphics I'm sure they'd of done something a lot nicer.

Yup. Did you see the early 'Getaway' screens? THAT'S how you fake a screenshot.

That new shot looks not that much more graphically rich than a 'staged' Halo screen dump. Seems reasonably plausable.

Ah.....

It's really important to point out that this screen is straight from the current game engine. The resolution is a little sharper thanks to the way screens are dumped from the frame buffer, but this is entirely representative of the lighting, polygon counts, bump-mapping and particle effects. There's no trickery or BS here. And of course, this is early stuff, so things will change and improve between now and launch. We basically played the game and took a ton of shots until we finally picked the one that rocked the hardest, and best represented what playing that level was like.

Like most screenshots, it appears to be a render-up, made at far-higher-than-game resolution.

well duh!

you'd think i'd know that since i was playing it today. i thought it was more of a bluey white effect. oh well, was too busy sniping to notice and they generally just died.

Is that a base i see miles away in the background. just underneath and on the inside of the top right piece of rubble.

let me just say that bright blue and red master cheif's have never looked worse.

oh and please don't say that yeloow glowing effect is quad damage or something equally as silly.

That 's what it looks like when you get hit in Halo multiplayer my little munchkin.

EDIT: Bah, soong beat me to it.

The Chiefs really looks like plastic. It's like the new Toyota line-up, with the Corolla and Avensis as very decent cars... which just look a little plastic according to the standard of today.

.::: They're better suited to the HALO2 toyline in that way.

Just imagine the backlash if the toys wouldn't look alike. All those swarms of angry kids!

I'm looking forward to Halo 2 as much as the next faceless internet geek, but lawks, you think they could've picked a better screenshot. Like all right-minded individuals I hate brown: it's an utterly rubbish colour, and an incredibly brown looking terrain set against an incredibly brown looking sky strikes me as overkill.

Sorry to rant, but if Halo was one thing, it wasn't brown.

Still, it's nice to see you can still indulge in a spot of Chief-on-Chief action. I'd been labouring under the impression that one team would be obliged to play as Covenant Elites. I'm relieved, because playing as one of the Covenant's finest never really appealed; the Chief, for whatever reason, is way cooler.

Other than that, there's not much to ascertain from the screenshot. It looks like the Needler's made the jump (judging by the little chappie on the far side of the map) and the frag grenades have been given a shiny new lick of paint - assuming, of course, that they are frag grenades.

I'm kinda relieved we won't be seeing it before the end of this year. At least we can be certain it won't be a rush job and, sometimes, the sense of anticipation can be just as enjoyable as the event itself.

except that the grab is the same resolution as Halo itself running through HDTV.

Are you sure?

Xbox max resolution: 1920x1080 interlaced*

Screenshot: 1600x1200

*edit: I'd be very surprised if many Xbox games support this res though. I think True Crime might do, unless they took the option out.

sorry, my browser window was shrinking it.

it's in-game but a direct grab then.

Note the angle and colour of the frame.

Devkit image running thru vga capture. Not a capture of a running game.

So we wait for another bloody christmas release schedule, how I love the game industry. Well that gives me 11 months to read up for that law degree and get my bass playing up to teaching standard whilst publishers release nothing but drivel for my console collection.

I'm beginning to wonder if the next generation of consoles is really going to be worth my time or money. So many things to do and quite frankly never enough time to do them in.

it's out the same time period as Prime 2, Res Evil 4, Doom 3 and something else really ace on the PC. What a shit idea.

oh yeah and i was playing MOH Frontline last night because i was bored and wanted to play a FPS game. God damn it's shit but it has got a control method entitled "hail to the chief" and it 's the halo set up.

Given the 'later than expected' release date of Halo 2, it would now be wise for Bungie to 'spunk their load' and reveal all at E3.

Another year is an awful long time to build up more speculation, and for expectant gamers to start theorising what new innovations/concepts are going to be in the game, which in turn could lead to dissapointment once the game hits the shelves.

Imagination is greater than reality.

Its a grab made through the xbox. with a keyboard hooked up to a dev xbox you can take direct screen grabs from the xbox video ram, it then saves it as a file on the hard drive. Thats all they have done here, its in game, as if it was playing but its taken as such before it reaches the lower resolution of a tv.
