I only have pacific rim on 4k HDR blu ray, which is pretty (2k upres), but I am interested in actual 4k reference quality films if there are any about?

Planet Earth II is proper 4K according to the reviews and it looks fantastic.

I've been wondering it's worth going to uhd bluray. I recently got a 4k TV but don't have a uhd player. Was thinking of maybe getting the one s, but I'm worried it's a fad medium - uhd doesn't seem to have taken off at all so far.

I'll end up there one day (assuming it becomes the dominant format), but to be honest I'm happy enough with DVD quality! I usually buy Blu Rays if there's not much of a price difference and obviously can see the picture is sharper/better, but DVDs don't seem in any way lacking if I watch one of those instead. Probably helps that the the current 43" tv is really as big as can physically fit in the lounge, due to the position of the various doors and windows and the chimney breast.

No momento = no sale for me.

seems like good value but I think he's very overrated as a director. I did enjoy Dunkirk and the prestige, though.

Already pre-ordered it. Food stamps for everyone, this Christmas.

You'll notice that it's all his PG-13 movies, so no Insomnia either. Memento's languishing in the vaults of AMBI Pictures, waiting to be be remade.

You can get the US set for around £103 shipped from ImportCDs.com, using the discount code TAKE10, which ends tomorow.

Or, if you just want The Dark Knight Trilogy:

http://www.importcds.com/dark-knight-trilogy/883929599158

They're a sister site of WOWHD and customs safe. No idea if any of the BDs will be locked to Region A, (not an issue for me), but it's possible given that Interstellar and The Prestige were both region locked previously.

"But Warner don't region lock!"

Warner didn't release Interstellar or The Prestige in North America.

I have got hold of a few 4K blu rays to try out. Got two from Cinema Paradiso and bought two second hand from AV Forums. I have a Xbox One X to play them on. The only one I have got to watch so far is Wonder Woman. The opening 1/2 hour is a decent advert for HDR. The lush green foliage on the island pops quite well and the colours look so rich. But from then on the muted colours all these DC films seem to have do not really do the format any favours. These's still some occasional nice HDR - her whip / the lighting in the bunker scene / the lightning bloke but despite the reviews I didn't really find it a stellar showcase for the format beyond that opening 30 minutes. I have to admit, despite all the hype and the great box office takings, I thought this was a terrible film. Gal Gadot is stunning but as a movie I don't see what the fuss was about.

Just as a contrast I had the final episode of The Sinner (1080p) to watch on Netflix afterwards. In comparison to a 4K blu ray the resolution difference isn't really that big of a deal on my 50" screen but it certainly felt a bit muted and washed out.

I still have Kong Skull Island, Sicario and Trainspotting 2 4K blu rays to give a go.

I had my copy of Hacksaw Ridge turn up yesterday and it looks pretty great. I don't have HDR but my Panasonic player does a decent job of replicating it and it looks pretty nice. I too have been tempted to pick up Skull Island, but I've heard mixed things compared to the Blu-Ray and might go 3D instead.

The blu ray section in my local Tesco is madness now. The standard blu rays in with the 3D blu rays and now the UHD blu rays. It’s just an unorganised mish mash.

Someone that is uninformed might not have much fun trying to buy the right disc.

I was thinking about it for a while but I generally have gone all digital. Apple 4K TV is simply incredible quality and the fact that you can rent helps a lot since it allows me to see movies I would never actually buy. I will buy some all time favorites on disc at some point though.

The collection of Nolan also looks amazing. What a great director.

I watched Sicario last night. I’m well aware it won an AV Forum award as a reference disc and it’s a film I really rate. Unsurprisingly it delivered a clean, crisp image with some nice but not overstated HDR. There’s absolutely nothing negative to say.

But, I tried out a 1080p stream of the same movie afterwards and it was quite remarkable how close it was to the UHD disc with a totally different colour gradient between the two. The disc produced a sort of cool, blue image while the 1080p stream had a yellowish sheen. Nonetheless it’s surprisingly apparent how good the non 4K version looks. It’s inferior for sure but not as much as I thought.

Going forward I can’t see me picking up many UHD new releases for £20 / £25 a time. It’s the ultimate format but it doesn’t really appear to be the quantum leap I expected. I’ll dabble a bit but looking at the far better film pricing I think I’ll end up with an Apple TV 4K.

Sorry to burst your bubble. But if your display doesn't process HDR, then it doesn't matter what your Panasonic player is doing. :(

I see a different image over not using it which is brighter and more vibrant than when I'm not. And professional reviewers are impressed with what it does as well. I'll be fine thank you. I'll also upgrade when my current tv stops working. It's too good to simp,y replace it :)

If you see a difference, then that's all that matters. :)

Exactly. Yes it's not as good as HDR but it's impressive what the pannies can do and will be fine for the time being. I sit quite close to my tv as well, so my than happy with the resolution bump.

Got some new films for Christmas and just watched Unforgiven. The indoor scenes still aren't brilliant but the detail when it's in daylight is exceptionally good. The bit where the have the cowboys pegged down in a canyon has some amazing detail. Very happy with it.

Have to say... I spent a small fortune on a 4K TV and an Xbox One X. Yesterday I sat down to watch the T2 4K cut and.. I couldn't tell any difference. I have the standard def Bluray to compare but doesn't look any different to me certainly not a need to start replacing films.  Had more luck with games but only for a short while after a bit it just sort of washes over you and forget its there but the films were very disappointing. Feel like I've wasted a fair old chunk of cash when my TV before was just fine, don't think I will be buying any more 4K films not when they are around £25.

The T2 4K disc is supposed to be a bit of a  let down, it's mastered from the 3D version used in the cinema so it's waxy and soft.

Try something like John Wick 2 (which I thought looked stunning) or wait for Blade Runner 2049 before writing it off. Personally I would not buy old catalog movies in 4K - like you I think Blu Ray is perfectly fine for older movies - just new releases for me going forward.

I've only got Planet Earth 2. I was in HMV yesterday and didn't buy anything but they have a 2 for £30 offer on some of the 4K stuff. I was a bit tempted with Goodfellas and Kong Skull Island (I've not seen that). I'd imagine Goodfellas is a bit pointless in 4K as that film isn't about breathtaking visuals - it is in my top 5 of all time films though.
