Got 30 4K UHD blu rays already and seen about 6 films so far. I only use a 43 inch LG LED display in living room and it is not ideal for 4K blu rays. I will upgrade my TV (my is 50inch Plasma) next Christmas. I heard Blade Runner 2049 got ATMOS in USA version but not Europe. Is Dolby Atmos important ? As I don't have the speakers for it yet.

Atmos is a nice extra to have. My Onkyo supports it, but the only 4K disc I have that supports it is Mad Max Fury Road.

Is Atmos DD5.1 with extra speaker on the ceiling ?

DD5.1 is a decade ago. Atmos is HD audio (much less compression, but you should have that bit from any receiver in the last eight years or so) with additional ceiling speakers to give object based audio. It might be great, but who’s got the time or space to put speakers there?

I have upfiring speakers for Atmos and haven't been that impressed with them (concluded ceiling speakers was the much better option).

But I watched The Punisher* the other day and a helicopter clearly sounded like it was coming from above, it was fantastic.

It just needed proper discreet channelled sound to those speakers to make them stand out. The rest of the time I guess the idea is to be subtle.

*The Punisher is available in Dolby Atmos via the Xbox Netflix app or the Netflix app on a 2017 LG OLED.

There is no point buying anything but the 4k version. It makes Blu-ray look very average.

War of the planet of the apes. Jesus that is a technical masterpiece of a movie and a fantastic transfer.

But they've started doing that very thing. Instead of the usual DVD+BR+digital that everything is these days, I grabbed the BR+4K for Blade Runner.

Now I just need the damn TV, and I suppose a newer Xbox.

All 4k disks I’ve bought have come with blu-rays.

Is there a direct way I can apply for the job of designing these covers because Jesus wept.

I don't know if it really os that important but I've been using real or fake 4K to determine if a disc is a worthwhile purchase. Assuming this badly designed site at least has the correct facts, there seems to be quite a lot out there which isn't worth my time.

I honestly don't think it's that important.  I watched Paddington 2 in 4K the other night (which is apparently "fake 4K") and it looked absolutely glorious.  The HDR alone makes a massive difference.

Thanks for this site link and added it to my bookmark. Should be useful.

The reduced compression and wider colour gamut is usually the thing that’s most obvious. Resolution much less so.

Sorry Dirk, but that site is bobbins. There are plenty of 4k discs that use 2k masters and are still exceptional. Pacific Rim and John Wick 2 instantly spring to mind.

Native 4K is nice, but it's nowhere near as important as good use of HDR and wider colour gamut.
