I’ve watched a stack of 4K’s recently. Here’s my ratings

 

Godzilla (kick ass one)

Wow. An absolute stunner of a disc. 4/5

 

Leon

This is even better. What a belter this is in 4K, really makes you realise how good Besson can be. 5/5

 

Jurrasic Park

A slight letdown. Picture quality is extremely variable. 3/5

 

Man of Steel.

A great film in 4K with the opening Krypton scenes looking staggering. 4/5

 

Apollo 13

Major disappointment. Didn’t feel like any kind of upgrade. 1/5

 

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 

Sublime picture quality throughout.  5/5

 

Sicario

Brilliant. 5/5

 

Kong Skull Island 

An incredibly vivid picture and amazing sound. 4/5

 

Fantastic Beasts 1 and 2

Both of these are great. Particularly the night scenes. 4/5

 

Indiana Jones and the last crusade

Great stuff. A real upgrade from the standard blu ray 4/5

 

Jaws.

Absolutely amazing, miles better than the standard blu ray. 5/5


Power Rangers

Poor. No different to standard blu ray. 1/5


The Mummy (Brendan)

A mixed bag. Some of the CGI shots look abysmal in 4K. 2.5/5

 

Speed

Absolutely first class picture quality. 5/5

 

Waterworld

A fantastic film in 4K. 4/5

Any thoughts on the remaster of the originals? I've been waiting for the ultimate edition since last year's re-release. I watched the standard dvd recently upscaled by my player and it looked pretty decent still...

I haven’t opened this up yet (saving it for Christmas)  but I did buy the smaller 4K box set when it was released last year.

 

looked way better than any other version I’d seen, does look overly shape in some sections but the 4K bump and Atmos sound stage really elevate it to another level.

 

I fully advocate buying any of the 4K versions, you won’t regret it.

They’re ok but not amazing.

The picture is quite soft, and the digital effects are showing their age now - but this is as good as the films are going to look without New Line going all Star Wars special editions on them, which I don’t see happening

This is probably a stupid question, but why is the 4K UHD BR LotR trilogy split over 9 discs? This one:

From what I can see, it includes the theatrical and extended editions of each film but doesn't include any special features or Makings Ofs, etc. Are the extended editions on two discs each because they're so long? So the theatrical release on one disc and the extended releases on two discs, per film? It's currently on sale for less than £50 and I'm tempted. Been a long time since I watched them.

The extended and standard versions are included. So for each movie it's one disc for extended, one for theatrical, and one for extras.

EDIT: I correct myself - for each movie, the extended version is on two discs. (So to the below, with the third disc being for the theatrical version of the movie there's not so much room for extras.)

 

Note that certain extras from the extended blu-rays have been omitted.

Thanks both. Hmm. I'm not that bothered about the extended editions, but I wouldn't mind watching some of the extras. Maybe I should get the standard Blu-Ray box set instead.

I got The Howling through the post yesterday. Not quite as good as I remember. I don't think it's aged particularly well, despite some great FX work. American Werewolf In London is still the absolute best from that era.

 

The 4K transfer is pretty stunning though. It's so detailed, it's one of those "they could have filmed this yesterday" discs. The credits rolling over the top of a slowly sizzling burger is still great. :)

Apologies if this is a naive question, but before I purchase the 4K edition of the Dune 2021 film, just wanted to double check that my TV is capable of playing this version of the film is actual 4K

I have a LG - 43UK6950PLB 43" Smart Ultra HD HDR LED TV, but some places state is is 4K and others that it isn't. All a tad confusing. I would be playing the film via my PS5 connected directly to the TV via the bundled HDMI cable.

Just making sure it is worth paying the extra for the 4K version instead of the normal Blu Ray. This would be the first 4K film I have purchased.

My player is at the top of Sony's range (800M2) and it seems that is incapable of playing a BD100 disc format film all of the way through without freezing / crashing the player entirely, at times you have to cycle the power for it to recover.

 

Searching around it seems to be a thing at the layer changes, something that was an issue at times with very early DVD players, and yet here we are again. Also not just Sony but LG and others 

 

What standalone players are you using? I'm looking at returning the Sony for a Panasonic (Dolby Vision support is a must)

The hardware is faulty. Get it replaced with the same one if you otherwise like it. It’s a common symptom of a common hardware fault on any multi-layer disk, from DVD on upwards.

Yes this is what I think - but the dealer I bought the player from doesn't - they believe its signal path stuff/handshaking/cables

 

I contacted them requesting a swap out of the player, but they've insisted today on sending me a set of their HDMI cables to try out. We discussed at length about my set up, and it's funny because they way they where talking it has all about "turn this feature off", "try this setting", "don't run your audio to a AV amp" etc. etc. - I think I'll end up watching films on a portable TV in mono at this rate!

 

It's been good customer service to be honest, but I think they are barking up the wrong tree with sending me different cables to try out
