The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

So people just survived:

Spoiler

Pompeii happening, which kills you horribly in four separate ways and everyone is grand.

This is probably the least worst option for the corner they painted themselves into, but it's just stupid.

Spoiler

Oh apparently Celeborn died. Now could be explained by him getting a new body and then him turning up in Season 4 to explain him being in Lord of the Rings. But this is the the type of purest, fit in the gap retcon that is precisely the sort of thing likely to drive anyone into the lore wild.

Islidur's dead! What the Islidur that famously cut the ring from Sauron's finger at the final battle of the Second Age, that Islidur?

Elrond is likable. Hobbits are surprisingly one of the least grating parts.

In general this remains pretty and too slow.

Well, they think Isildur's dead, it's like you've never watched television before.

As for Celeborn, there's not stating that he's dead or lost, like her brother, just that she never saw him again.

Spoiler

There's no evidence anywhere in Tolkien that Celeborn was dead, captured, taken or generally apart from Galadriel. It's just a full on retcon.

The sort "Is he dead thing" is to introduce tension for the audience and some sort of conflict with the characters. Except this is a cack way of doing it.

The wife and I have binned this. We both realised with episode 6 that we had now watched over six hours over the last few weeks and didn't care about any of the characters. Apart from Elrond, Durin and Galadrial we could barely remember any of their names. It's drivel. Utter drivel. We're both LOTR fans. I was blown away by Jackson's films. I read The Hobbit and Fellowship but left it there. My wife has read them all and The Silmarillion. We had our Honeymoon in New Zealand. We visited Hobbiton the day after they had finished filming the scenes for The Hobbit movies. She went off of this after episode three. I decided to persevere but episode six was my Seinfeld.gif moment. We LOL'd a couple of times. My favourite was when Galadrial said to Isildur "You have the look of your Father about you." Enter his Father from stage left. He looks fuck all like him.

It's all so bland and safe. An utter disappointment.

It doesn't have to be literal. I took that as her meaning he has a similar attitude or, I dunno, glint in the eyes or whatever. She didn't say "You look like your father". The fate of Isildur is about how these characters react and feel about it. It's just dramatic irony, not bad storytelling.

I'm well up for a series of

Spoiler

Lenny Henry stomping around the countryside upsetting racists who demand Aryan purity in their Hobbits.

It is easy to pick holes in the show but at the end of the day prequels are really hard to get right. I think they have done a good job - enough new stuff in there while being true enough to the original films. It is all about the dwarves though. They are the best think in the Tolkien universe by a country mile. Like the Jedi in the SW universe, the elves are so overpowered in most situations that they just seem dull by comparison.

maybe it'll be like that John Cusack movie and EVERYONE is Sauron.

ORKS DON'T GET SECOND CHANCES.

Why the fuck is Mythril so important to the existence of the elves?

it holds the light of a stone which is a tree which is god, or something. And will stop them from turning mortal. Or make them high as fuck.

Has the 'who is Sauron' thing even been mentioned in the show? If it wasn't for this thread I'd have no idea it was even meant to be a mystery, just figured he was some dude we haven't met yet.

I think for anyone who knows the lore - it's a big deal... if you don't (and especially if you haven't seen/read LotR) then you'd probably have no idea other than the first couple of episodes where Galadriel was convinced he was still around and found his chamber where he experimented with creating life...

Adar claims to have killed him... and Halbrand had a very suss interaction with him when they caught him in the woods

Same, but now I'm happy to be down the Sauron rabbithole thanks to here. Although I don't like thinking about it too much as it'll be a nice wee reveal when/if it happens. Of course we could all be wrong and he is just Sauron off in the middle of nowhere, not sure where this Sauron identity rumormongering first got started.

Spoiler

I'm leaning into the 'Galadriel's loved one' theory, whether its her lover, brother or whatever. It would be a logical arc for her revenge quest to find out its someone she loved. Although obviously because Sauron was around from the Morgoth days there must be some sort of spirit possession/taking of the Sauron title for that to work.

If its someone that becomes a new Sauron there's so many possibilites. One bet would be the village kid, he's already got a taste of the evil and if something happens like his mum dying it could push him over the edge. The orc king taking up the mantle could be another possibility.

And of course there's the Southland king but so far we haven't seen much indication of a dark side, but maybe he'll pursue power to take back the Southlands and that will corrupt him. Or as some people plausibally theorise, he was the original Sauron and has tried to redeem himself. Another possibility is that Sauron's one of his relatives like father or brother which would explain his trauma and cause some good conflict with him and Galadriel when she finds out.

Credit where its due, the whole 'who is Sauron' thing is awesome and totally unexpected.

I can't help wondering - whose idea was it? Did the casting director think "Hmm, I know, Lenny Henry!" when they were trying to work out who should play the leader of the new tribe of hobbits.

Or did Henry's agent think "Yup, that's the one!" while going through upcoming roles to put him up for. Because they both seem equally unlikely.

Who is the blond haired young evil-looking dude we keep seeing from time to time? I have to admit I haven't paid 100percent attention when watching it all the time so although I've noticed him I haven't really kept track of what he is up to and how he relates to the story.
