The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

I honestly thought people would be bringing it up to say how much of a fuss over nothing it was, a lot of 2016 games got hit with all the post-Gamergate takes that were a little bit overblown in retrospect, the Shadow of Mordor series seemed to cop a lot of them (it had that fuss over the kiss your wife bit too).

The main reason it’s there is so they can actually have the villain do some acting, rather than be an impersonal force of darkness. It’s not sexist because they do it with Sauron too (as does Rings of Power). And she’s never used in a sexy way, she doesn’t have any stupid goth outfit with a spider motif, it’s just a plain black, non revealing dress. What was the problem, exactly?

It’s like that fuss over a pinup spray in the first Overwatch, if you listened to people at the time it was like this one minor thing was single-handedly responsible for stopping women in the games industry, now it’s completely forgotten and also looks a bit trivial when that series is mostly known for animations of the characters railing each other with 12 inch futa horsecocks.

I remember thinking sexy Shelob was alright. She wasn't sexy, though she was attractive. She was scary more than anything else. There was a hint of flirtatiousness that seemed in keeping with dimwits getting stuck in her web looking for treasure so to speak. She wasn't offensively bad unless you're of the opinion that Tolkien's world can never be added to, updated or reimagined in any way. I recall Shelob in "the lore" was only ever appearing in Spider form to shit people up essentially. Regardless of what the estate deems canon, we know none of this stuff is canon because Tolkien's dead. So what's the big problem, really?

Not to mention how bonkers Shadow of war goes at the end, revealing the protagonist

Spoiler

succumbs to the corruption of the ring, becomes a Nazgul and hunts Frodo lol

Those games were fun from a lore perspective, as long as you take it for what it is.

Who are people trying to convince here? If you don't like it and find it bad fan fiction, that's fine, chalk it off as something you don't like and move on. But telling us that over and over wont change ours minds.

For me, the time compressions and overall show was approved by the JRRT estate which have been ultra critical of stuff before, Christopher hates the films for example, so for him to sign off on this he must have been happy enough.

Is this kensei? It'll be exactly like every Star Wars thread on here. Like the Terminator, he absolutely will not stop.

I enjoyed it as well - and tbh, I don't think it would break Tolkein's lore for such forces of evil and darkness to chose how they appear.  Sauron can do it so maybe other of these ancient things can too.

Also that recent Keiron Gillen tweet, reminicing of the time staff members from PC Gamer and EDGE magazine all went on a jolly together to see The Fellowship of the Ring on opening night, and there was a divide between the PC Gamer guys loving it, and the EDGE guy criticising it for it's deviation from the source material (which they then comment on in the next EDGE issue) should of had me cancelling my subscription to that stupid magazine from orbit.

I'll never forget the first few issues of Edge - graphics are everything, 3D  is best, Japan.

Count me in as someone else who thinks Shadow of War was quite hard done by. Story is definitely goofy but it’s more fun than any Assassins Creed game from the past decade. Leading an army of orcs to invade a castle that you’ve already infiltrated with minions never gets old.

The shadow of war sequel is a fantastic game, I only played it a year or two ago. I don't really care about the lore or what they did to it, the story is completely secondary to the main point of the game, the great environments and of course the amazing Nemesis system. People who have dismissed it should check it out and just ignore the whacky story thats tacked on. The orcs are soo good in shadow of war and its got fun combat and traversal.

Really enjoyed listening to this. Great to hear a bunch of people who liked the show as much as I did, giving a run down of the show.

Fuck off, mate. Don't call people dickheads just because they don't like the television show you like.

I will when it's the same repeated criticism over and over again. It not the dislike, it's the endless repetition of that dislike, over and over and over and over.

Hmm I'm not sure that works as a concept.

Have you been into the Politics or "The Queen" threads the last year?

Anyhow this started pretty well, then it ended up being a bit silly.

The Southlanders seemed to be about twenty people and they were genuinely hard to care for. All I remember is hot leader woman, her son, and that guy who turned on them.

The Mordor reveal was super clear from the start, although how they got there was super nonsense. Just happened to have that one key thing ready to do that thing! Then MORDOR.

The big bad reveal was weird. A concept on paper that was sound, it was pulled off clumsily. Then like that! He was gone.

A bad Usual Suspects endgame.

The big guy reveal was an attempt at fooling you all, but nah it didn't really.

What was weird was the - quick! Let's resolve it all in the last tenth of the entire show.

I enjoyed it for the first three/four, then it seemed to drag, lots of elves visiting dwarves within a few seconds, some chatting and disagreement, and the result was "ohh look what's down there."

I found it all really dark and hard to watch. I had to close the curtains and even in the evening I couldn't make out what was going on in some scenes.

However it was distracting enough and I liked Galadrial. Just a pity she seemed a bit under used. There was some good fighty bits at the start and then it petered away. Not that I want all action, a bit more would have been nice mind.

6.3/10

Right. I think that's me totally done here. I have basically only chatted on 2 TV related threads in about 6 months but it's just not worth it.

Apologies for messing up the thread and the show you enjoyed.

  • 2 weeks later...

Watching episode 5 now and I decided to Google the cast to see if the actress playing nori's mate sang the song or not. As I was scrolling I saw one of the cast's character name was listed as

Spoiler

Sauron. Wow, thanks for that Google. I did think there was something dodgy about him but I hadn't twigged that he's sauron. Why couldn't they have him listed as halbrand?

because the reveal was the best part of seven weeks ago, and in the last episode of the series - and every subsequent series - that’s his role.

also automated systems are shit.
