I can’t remember if they explicitly explained earlier in the show, but we can assume from the bit where the small part is stopped at the end.

It seems the perpetual motion engine just keeps going and it’s energy has to go somewhere. When that part of the train is stopped at the end, it’s getting very hot.

That's not it. The train generates energy by moving (somehow), and normally stopping has resulted in everyone getting very cold indeed. I figured the engine was generating too much energy for the small amount of carriages connected at the end of that episode, hence the heat.

There's obviously no scientific basis for any of that of course, it's just one of many things in the show you're not supposed to think too hard about.

Spoiler

so Snowpiercer is at the front, Big Alice at the rear (fnar fnar) - how did they split 10 cars off to go BACK and still have big Alice ahead of Snowpiercer ?

it was all a bit silly as everybody can now just teleport around the train at will

Nearing the end of season one and I’ve enjoyed it when Jennifer Connolly is on screen, but otherwise it seems rather dull.  Also fed up with the level one direction. Emotional bit - some slow motion, intense looks, music builds, more slow motion etc...Fight sequence - frantic music, screams of rage, blood spurts, slow motion, anguish, more screams, intense looks to camera...oh the humanity etc...

Just want someone to start shouting ‘Fenton’ in the middle of all the kerfuffle.

Started this the other day and I'm really enjoying it.  I did wonder how it would work and be anything but ridiculous (I've never seen the film) but they've made it well.  Connelly is good, the English actress is the right side of annoying and they don't linger on one plot too long (I was expecting the murder to be solved in a Season not a couple of episodes).

It's pretty brutal in places too.

The thing I struggle to suspend my belief about most is that no one seems too fussed about LJ serial killer and castrater just wandering about among them.

She really needs to die, doesn't she!!

I'm upto date now, watched the last 4 episodes beck to back last night.  I'm hoping season 3 will be just an stupid and enjoyable.  I do hope what we think had happened isn't true though, as the character is too good to lose.

Did Jennifer Connolly turn up this time or is she leaving Sean Bean to do the heavy lifting for the whole season again?

Spoiler

She's dead. Unless there's some third season twist that there's a clone of her or something.

Show wise, they didn't show her body, and they brought back the love interest (Josie?) who it seemed was going to be pretty dead from what I remember of the first series.
That wall with the rats who knows what else might have been there.

Hmm. I'll need to watch the episode again. See if there are any clue she's not really dead.

If she was definitely dead they'd have shown a body. At the very least it was left open for the writers/Connelly's contract to decide later.

Her character has proven rather resourceful in the past, so there will always be some wacky way for her to survive. We'll probably find out she's managed to get herself into suspended animation or something.

I think the story needs to expand out further so in the same way the second train popped up out of nowhere they'll introduce a group of survivors who've lived in the mountains for years and dragged Melanie back to safety.

All total guesswork but with the temps as portrayed she can't have set up camp in a tent with a few sticks for months.
