Retro Gamer 177

Recommended Posts

retrogamer_01.jpg

We're doing something a little different for the first issue of 2018.

It's a 42-page photography led feature covering the greatest systems of all time. As voted by readers. We've got 48 developers chatting about your picks and I'm really pleased with how it's come out.

There's still other Retro Gamer goodness though

Making Of Earthworm Jim 2

Making Of Venture

Archives: Looking Glass Studios

Ultimate Guide: Castle Of Illusion

The Unconverted

Classic Moments - Super Skidmarks

In the chair: Tony (Tiny) Williams

And much more.

On sale January 25th

Jaguar takes the top spot.  Sorry for the spoiler, everyone.

Where does the GX4000 come?

You'd soon change your tune if you'd held a GX4000 in your grubby hands, you fiends.  It's a gorgeous, weighty little thing (no eupho).  Were it only released a few years earlier there might have been enough games to make it worth owning one.

Nice to see the Lynx front and centre on the cover.

42 pages!?

tl;dr

Yup. We wanted to do something we've never done before, which is a photo-led feature with lots of developer input. Think of it like when we did the 150 games feature a couple of years back, but with far more developer input.

The caveat as always is it's not our list :)

Sorry Amstrad GX4000 fans but your system came in at 59th and we're only covering the top 30.

Into a sock, while crying.

Is it the Nintendo Switch?

It's Retro Gamer so they only cover old consoles, up to and including the PS4 and Xbone.

Funnily enough we had the same criteria as before so nothing is off the table, meaning anything from the switch to the micro duck could make the final list. It's how we ended up with Skyrim at number 17 when we did our top 150 games list. It's going to be an interesting list, let's just say that.

I know it's dark out, so I'll assume that's why you didn't notice me throwing shade ;)

I wish the Mega Duck had made the list. I'd have loved to have pressed developers on their love for the Mega Duck.

Eesh... I don't like the sound of this issue at all. I hope to be pleasantly surprised.

The main feature is so... empty. Pages and pages of a picture with a quotation slapped on it. Not impressed whatsoever.

We wanted to specifically do something different so we did. Don't worry it'll be business as usual next issue. the feature itself has gone down really well, it's the positions that most people have been angry about.

i guarantee that the next main feature is going to be absolutely rammed with words on each page. Unless of course you don't like GoldenEye...

I don't mind things being different once in a while, but I had a feeling it would turn out exactly as it did. It just feels like 'fluff' to me - though I'm in no way saying you didn't put your heart and soul into it. Just not my personal cup of tea, is all.

It's been a while since I moaned, too, so I'm sure that's the real reason behind it.

It's fine. When you get nearly 50 developers celebrating why they love gaming systems it will feel like that :)
