February Hip-Hop Recommendations

W00t! Clive mentioned TWO albums I have - Bizarre Ride and Judgement Night... aces. I love Straight Outta Compton too... natch.

Now that I've built up a tiny bit of kudos, who is going to destroy me when I ask if anyone's coming along to Ozomatli?

(I love 'em, especially live).

Quantic Soul Orchestra- Stampede.

Okay, so strictly speaking it isn't hip hop. What do you want me to do, go off and form K's February Jazz-Funk Recommendation Thread? It is vaguely hip-hop related though, what with it being ram-packed with super-tough breaks and generally thumping beats.

Plus, it's utterly superb. Quantic Soul Orchestra is the brainchild of Will Holland, a man with a finely tuned funk sensibility, and it's obviously a labour of love. Every track is excellent- a finely judged jazzy excursion that never descends into noodly rubbish. The standout track, for me, is a cover of 'Hold It Down' by 4Hero that transforms the original into a breathy, upbeat jazz number, with some fantastic guitar playing.

It's ace, and it's only six quid from Amazon. Get it now, and feel a powerful senstation in your body and mind. If you liked Breakstra, you will want to have sex with this. Etc.

Quantic Soul Orchestra- Stampede.

I don't reckon its anywhere near as good as "The 5th Exotic", though. Which is really good. And I reckon its because Quantic, on his own, is all samples, breaks, loops and such, and Stampede is all live-bandy, and loses something.

It's not a bad album, though. Just not as good.

As the topic title states 'not just new stuff' i thought i pimp my favourite albumn of all time and hope it inspires someone to give it a try

B00000IP8Y.01.MZZZZZZZ.jpg

Not strictly hip hop, Id class it more as breakbeat/dance/breakdance.

Although featuring soul sonic force aswell as tenor fly and navigator mc's

Back when it was released (98) radio 1 played the stand out track 'b-boy stance' a fair bit and thats where i first heard them, i think it got to around no20 in the top 40, and iirc were the first to feature live scratching/breaking ever on top of the pops. Anyway the whole cd is quality, some tracks have an old school hip hop feel, some are dancfloor fillers, some have a ragga / reggae vibe, some just classic breaks. 'cut and paste part 1' features streetfighter samples mixed with pulp fiction dialogue.

If your a PE fan you'll spot a number of samples from 'it takes a nation of millions' across a few different tracks.

Anyhow a absolute classic albumn, which was followed up by the mildly dissapointing 'pressure point' but still worth picking up.

Nowadays they are still putting beats out under the alias 'raw as fuck'

but seemingly only as white labels and such.

buy it, download it, whatever, you wont be dissapointed.

I got hold of the latest Fabric Live album yesterday - a hip-hop mix by DJ Spinbad, and have to say it's the mutts.

That is all.

Wow, fabric have done a Spinbad mix CD?

I'll have to check that, his 80's mixtapes are legendary!

Went home at lunch time and broke out another couple of classics:

1. Nine- Nine Livez

Really Gruff sounding classic album. Good beats and only one shite song (Hit 'em like this is tosh). Home to great tunes like Who ya won test, Wutcha want and ovaconfident.

2. Nextmen-Amongst the Madness

Top Class UK Hip Hop/turntablists. Seen them live in Cambridge along with the Scratch Perverts and they were bloody aces.

3. Skitz- Countryman.

More cracking UK Hip Hop. Quite harcore and easy to relate to.

Great guest apperances by Wildflower, Rodney P And Roots Manuva.

Well worth a listen.

Fair enough, though. Jehst is rubbish. I went to his gig in Exeter (hoping he'd be better live) and I was blown away not by Jehst, but by Critically Ill and then the Jedi Mics. Both local, both great, and both not hyped at all, while this 'bohemian' dude gets all the cool reviews.

Moral of the story? You're a bad person for liking Jehst. Ask your mother.

You know nothing, listen to Premonitions EP and Alcoholic Author 12", Twat.

Amazing as it sounds, there used to be a fantastic UK Hip hop scene, with producer Simon Harris churning out classic album after classic album. He pretty much was Hip Hop's Pete Waterman of the day. A patchy album, but has a handful of amazing tunes.

I so want a copy. <_<

That doesn't sound amazing at all because there is a fantastic UK Hip-Hop scene right now, get down your nearest independent record store and get educated man, stop living in the past. And please never, ever, ever mention the name Pete W***rman ever again in a hip-hop thread, no matter what the reason.
