Def America became just 'American' didn't it? What did they ever end up bringing out? I have just one American album (Chino XL's first).

Yeah, it did. I believe Rick had to drop the word 'Def' from the name because Russel Simmons sued them.

I seem to recall that the 'Geto Boys' were on Def America.

Oh, add the first Geto Boys album to my all time favourites.

Surely the Geto Boys were on Rap-A-Lot the whole time?

Simmons also tried to sue Def Jux (hence the change to Definitive Jux). Good job he invented the word 'def' isn't it…

"BiographyThough the controversial subject matter of gangsta rap wasn't much of a barrier to popular success during the '90s, the Geto Boys' recordings proved almost too extreme for widespread exposure. Blocked from distributing their 1990 major-label debut by Geffen -- who insisted that a track dealing with necrophilia as well as murder was a step too far -- the group was saved by producer Rick Rubin, who arranged another distributor for the album, released on his own Def American label. Jesus. Isn't 'def' now in the Oxford English Dictionary?

Ooh, I didn't know that. Rubin looked brilliant on that C4 series a few years ago.

Also (for some reason) there appears to be TWO versions of the first Geto Boys album floating around (a first in hip hop history?)

Rick took the album and 're-did' a lot of the songs. His version of the album is far superior, re-mixed and re-rapped.

You can tell if you have this version of the album by listening to 'Just call me Scarface', where he used actors to do the 'voices' that sit behind Scarfaces rapping... "I sorry, please don't give me Grif (that's why your boys are on my balconey and they're frozen stiff).

Also subequent re-releases of the album have removed the Steve Miller band's 'The Joker' sample that sits behind, and forms part of the chorus of, 'Gangster of Love'.

So in effect, there are THREE versions of their debut album.

Gotta love that Hip Hop Trivia.

Rubin's a GOD. Incidently, is that series getting a DVD release? They did a book and the soundtrack, I quite fancy seeing it again.

Are you kidding? PE left Def Jam in about 1998. And Chuck said in about 1994 he can't even bear to be in the same room as Simmons.

Def Jam in its prime was the best hip-hop label ever. I have the Def Jam 10th Anniversary box set. Amazing depth of classics. It's been all down hill since. The book section of it has Simmons moaning about how the West Coast on his own label (which he hated) was outselling the East Coast stuff. It was Simmons who persuaded Warren G to pick up the mic. Warren G said he's couldn't emcee. Simmons said that didn't matter ;)

Wow. I too have that very boxset. Bloody good. A splendid mix.

A bit of Nice And Smooth never hurt anyone.

'sometimes I rhyme slow' is the nuts.

Hip-Hop Junkies is the one though. I love that.

Remember *that* MTV beach party that had N&S doing that live?. Also along for the ride were 'new boys' Cypress Hill, Leaders of the New School..... and a whole host of classics acts, all of whom ended up on stage at the end for a mammouth Freestyling session backed by the brand new heavies.

Stuff of Legend.

There's another Nice and Smooth track that gets a lot of play here, its not on the album, it starts out with "Hey Yo.. dizzy Gelespie plays the sax.... stick up kid is out to max". Can't recall it's name.

Awww man. It was about 4 hours long. It had EVERYONE from 1991 doing two songs each.

Live.

Big 'ole beach part with Bikini ladies as well.

Why did 'Yo!' finish? Was it because of dedicated channels doing hip hop?

Yes. Channels that ended up being shit. It's amazing that MTV once refused to play hip-hop. But once Yo! started it was their most popular show by a mile.

It was never the same after they got rid of Doctor Dre & Ed Lover (as well as T-Money) and Fab 5 Freddy.

Wow!...you felt the need to comment on that? What reaction were you expecting after 'that' juvenile outburst earlier on in this thread?

:( you deserved it. Anyway Ben is right, old school, new school its all hip-hop. But you older fans need to realise that there is some amazing hip-hop being made now. Just because you can't find any in HMV doesn't mean its not being released. Go to an independent record store and ask them to play you some good stuff, they'll oblige with a twinkle in their eye.

And on the other end of the hip-hop spectrum, y'all need to check this video. I think it's some dope ironic future ish. Heads may not be ready:

Actually, for now, thanks to Patriot, i've got the video hosted here (right click to save) Enjoy :(

It's electric Sensei by Halcali, a Japanese girl hip hop group and they're both 15. It's really funny and cute, I think you lot should check it out

This weekend I have been mostly chumming:

Sway and Tech- This or That.

Its ot some cracking tunes on it and some good freestyles towards the end.

Its got some good artists on there, Eminem, Krs-one, Charli 2na, Dialated Peoples

Worth having a look at if your after a good quality mix tape.

Gza/Genius- Legend of the Liquid Sword

The forth installment from one of my all time favourite MC's

Not quit up to Liqiud Swords standard but lets face it....what is?

IMO its better than Beneath The Surface, it has a much more sinister sound to it, more bass heavy tracks, listen to "Fame" to get the gist.

Some stunning word play from the clans finnest.

In answer to a few pages back:

@ Fusty:

Showbiz & AG's Runaway Slave is my fave LP too! B)

@Afterbirth:

Regarding your comments on the Biz Markie LP; I couldn't agree more BUT... If you can get hold of the tracks that weren't put on the final LP due to sample clearance problems, you'll hear the record Biz meant to make - and its slammin'.

I think they've got a few left over at www.rapandsoulmailorder.com - BUY IT NOW BEFORE IT SELLS OUT!

oh and I think De La's best Lp was De La Soul Is Dead - people never mention it but I think its as timeless as the Beasties Pauls Boutique LP.

my two pence.

For the rumour lovers amongst you, in their recent Radio 1 interview Beastie Boys said (off air) that they had done a "british themed" track for the new album. Now a rumour has surfaced about one of the tracks on the album being produced by DJ Format. Could the two be related? Probably not...
