Just started this, it's surprisingly nice.  Perfect for a minute or three here and there.

One question though, am I racing vs real people here? i.e. when I'm just going through the cups etc, not specifically choosing multiplayer from the menu.

No, they're names pulled from the player list.

Some huge unexpected news just now landed in Mario Kart Tour.

Battle mode is coming at the start of September (expected) but also that the gatcha system is going to be completely removed from the game - no more pipes - items to be bought outright.

The game has changed a lot since it's initial launch and personally, I'm very happy that Nintendo have removed the most predatory gambling aspects of the game.

Hopefully it will mean folks take a 2nd look at the game, as it has evolved a significant amount over the past 3 years and is the most content-rich and a satisfying single player high score experience, which compliments the multiplayer focused MK8 nicely.

I'd love to see Nintendo make a very clear stand against gatcha mechanics in all of their games and anything associated with their properties - even going so far as to make it harder to implement or support on Switch.

I think they're one of a few companies who have an opportunity to really make others look pretty bad and less concern about direct blowback.

Of course they are. I just think they're one that feels capable of bucking market trends to a larger degree. Maybe Microsoft too with the GamePass model but then I think part of that is still to sell DLC and add-ons within the game you get "for free".
