Mario Kart Tour - out now for mobile, if you really must

I signed up for the beta but didn't bother when I saw the monetization, and almost pre-registered for the final release when my phone notified me yesterday. Caught myself just in time. I'm just not going to support this sort of thing, however good the game may be. I've got a Switch sat there if I fancy some MK.

Why is it using portrait mode?

Good question. I would imagine it's to do with reading distances, on a small screen when playing a fast game where you are going forward the shorter the vision ahead then the more unfair it feels as items/obstacles suddenly pop up. By making it vertical you can see further into the distance, this is why most free runner games are either played in portrait or side scrollers.

Just got on for a few races. Looks nice enough, albeit more sanitised thanks to the course design and the iPhone screen.

It controls about as well as you’d expect. I can’t see it taking up much of my time and - bare with me on this one - I hope it tanks so Nintendo don’t get any ideas about ditching the main series for this.

Have you heard about THE PIPE? Did you know you can get valuable items from THE PIPE? Doesn't it feel satisfying to pull THE PIPE? How about spending some money on THE PIPE?

Yep this whole thing is a complete freemium nightmare with all the worst practices of F2P all collected in one handy place for your wallet gouging pleasure.

As to the game itself, it controls about as well as every other racing game on the App Store (ie. not very well). But a lot of people seem to like racing games with touch controls, so if you're one of them you'll likely get a bit of pleasure out of this before it stops giving you the free hits to try and get you hooked and you the hit paywall.

How did you reach this ridiculous conclusion? There's absolutely no reason to think Nintendo would ever do this, or that they can't exist in tandem. Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp didn't stop them developing New Horizons. The notion Nintendo would ditch decades of console development because a mobile game has a modicum of success is fucking idiotic.

I agree with the point if not the "you're a fucking idiot" way it's put. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is currently 3rd in the UK charts. 2 years after it came out on Switch, 6 years after it was originally released on WiiU. They're not going to abandon that kind of cash no matter how well the mobile game does.

I do kinda hope it tanks so that they go for more Mario Run style experiences over stupid shitty freemium.

Little bit harsh.

The risk is low of it happening, but like all businesses if this freemium model provides revenues/ROI far greater than other endeavours you'd be stupid to not move at least some of your resource across and it's not a simple as suddenly doubling your development teams to meet an (at this point unknown) need so you can run both in tandem

A more likely outcome is that you could see the gap between releases of console versions lengthen.

Fair enough, but it's the kind of knee jerk reactionary statement that ignores any kind of common sense that you see on social media and reddit spouted by actual idiots. It also reminds me of a time when people were evangelising about how mobile gaming was going to kill console gaming, and now we're all laughing our tits of at the notion. Well, aside from Apple Arcade apparently bringing the goods, but then not everyone owns an apple device capable of that service.

Speaking of AA, that's fucked this games monthly sub, hasn't it? The game itself is exactly as you'd expect, it's not going to supplant the main series simply by dint of it's not a good Mario Kart. Whether it's a good auto racer or whatever I've no idea.

I doubt the gaps could be any greater than they already are. And seeing as MK8 is the biggest selling Switch game with nearly 18 million copies I doubt they're going to not make 9.

I think the worry is less that they abandon full fat Mario Kart games, but rather they they look at just how much they can make with these shady practices and start filling their console games with them as well. It's not like we've not seen this with other publishers, who will happily charge you full whack for a game and then monetise out the wazoo with practices that were previously reserved for free to play titles. Despite being one of the worst offenders in the mobile space, Nintendo have been pretty good at keeping their full releases relatively clean so far. But I don't think it's an unfounded fear,

I like it as a Mario Kart I can play on my phone when I’m bored. There’s plenty of free game here and the gacha element makes it addictive. You either play or your pay. I’ve unlocked Bowser, DK and Baby Peach so far along with some karts and gliders. And yes, the prize of Pauline is taunting me at the pipe. It might be days, week or months before I’m able to unlock her but so be it.

But that’s me. It feels out of step coming out at the same time as Apple Arcade and will inevitably lead to problems for kids and their parents. Microtransactions, subscriptions, it all turns Nintendo into another Activision.

Yes, thank you.

I don’t think it’s likely but you’d have to be a bit “fucking idiotic” if you couldn’t think of a single reason why it possibly could happen. The switch already has two first party freemium games on it (Kirby and a Pokemon one) and you’d, again, have to be “fucking idiotic” if you didn’t consider these to be an experiment of sorts to test different revenue streams.
