Mario Kart Tour - out now for mobile, if you really must

I like it as a Mario Kart I can play on my phone when I’m bored. There’s plenty of free game here and the gacha element makes it addictive. You either play or your pay. I’ve unlocked Bowser, DK and Baby Peach so far along with some karts and gliders. And yes, the prize of Pauline is taunting me at the pipe. It might be days, week or months before I’m able to unlock her but so be it.

But that’s me. It feels out of step coming out at the same time as Apple Arcade and will inevitably lead to problems for kids and their parents. Microtransactions, subscriptions, it all turns Nintendo into another Activision.

Exactly the way I am feeling about it. Its OK to have a quick go on when I've a few spare minutes. Will never spend a penny on it though, but I don't tend to play games on the phone much anyway, I have far better devices for that.

Sounds OK to me.  I already use Dr Mario in this way, and used Fire Emblem in this way, and to a degree did the same with Mario Run, though I bought that, and the content felt well worth the money.

The F2P / freemium etc. discussion is quite interesting, and obviously Nintendo are keen to exploit it for profit, which is a bit of a shame really.  They will make money from it because it stands above the existing freemium titles due to the exposure of a known brand.  It's a shame they don't look at it the other way - making a lower cost / high value freemium title that's perhaps a little short or light on content, and use it to push actual console game sales, but perhaps the golden eggs are more frequent in the mobile space.

Glad you sorted out the extra newline in the 3rd post.

All Blue Shells etc fully deserved. I did edit the posts as fast as I could so apologies again. I shall go to the back of the grid.

And I agree with @shirubagan that the controls are pretty horrible. I really do not understand why people want to pump money into these kind of games, but I suppose if that is the limit of your exposure to gaming, you might think this is pretty good. If there is a quick break on the TV or similar I am far more likely to pick up my 3DS for a few minutes rather than my phone as the quality of the experience for stuff like this is miles better.

What you have to remember about gacha games is how the actual ‘game’ part plays is largely irrelevant. That part mainly exists just as a mechanism for collecting whatever currency/resources you need to get to your next dopamine releasing spin on the virtual fruit machine and hopefully getting something good that will make your resource collecting go slightly faster to get to your next spin.

Damn, already got my first duplicate. If there was ever the slightest chance of me handing any money over, Nintendo blew it within minutes. You need five rubies for one turn at the pipe and it costs £1.99 for three rubies. So it basically costs £3.98 to buy a loot box that starts throwing out duplicates after a handful of rewards. WTF.

This was my takeaway.

Also, am I racing against real people? They all have names above their head and I keep coming first but I don’t think this is through a large degree of skill.

I got a dupe with my 'tutorial' go on the pipe, how the fuck do they let that happen? I wasn't really in to begin with, just had a look out of curiosity, but with that I'm hard out.

Also having to either steer normally, or drift everywhere is ridiculous, makes slight line correcting nigh on impossible.

Avoid!

I installed, and saw something that amused me and made me wish I'd screenshot. So, I went into Settings and selected the "Start Fresh" option. Here's what's interesting - my 1st driver was Toadette, and the I got Peach from the pipe. 2nd time, it gave me Toad, and then Bowser. Bowser can use 2 items per item box, and I didn't have to pay for him or grind for him. This means some will be playing the FTUE repeatedly in order to get a specific driver, and I guess that Pauline is a possibility as she is in the same tier.

For what it's worth, I quite like it. There's a "Smart steering" option in settings, which I'll have to play about with ON and OFF to see which I prefer, but I can confirm that not using it with Bowser in 100 cc was quite fiddly, so further test runs will have to be made. I finished 2nd, which is nigh-on unheard of!

You do know you’re not racing against other people, right?
