Amazing stuff. I've been slightly obsessed with the rankings this week, and I've only managed a little over 18,000 points. Breaking the 20,000 point barrier is incredible, but I have someone in my friend list who got 26,000 points, and that seems unfathomable.

I've changed my mind about this game, mostly. It's really fun. I really struggle with New York Minute in all its variations. though.

I'm coming round to it as a piece of daft fun. Managed to finish first in my ranking list but only with just under 14K. Its a fun distraction and I certainly don't feel the need to spend any money on it.

It's definitely best to look at it away from the main Mario Kart games but for what it is, it's a pretty fun piece of free software

The week 2 scores are far harder than they were in week 1. I'm 5th in my worldwide bracket with just over 17000. Pretty sure I can improve, but the entire top 3 are all over 20k so it's not going to be the walkover that week 1 was. Although, the only real thing I need to do is ensure I'm in place for at least 1 tier promotion anyway, so as to complete the challenge.

Still really enjoying, and still puzzled as to the hate it is receiving.

Why is it puzzling? It's a brand people love with a shitty and pretty cynical subscription and microtransaction model. Regardless of getting on or not with mediocre controls it's not much of a stretch to see why people don't like it. Probably more because there's the assumption this is the tack Nintendo are suddenly and mysteriously going to take up instead of making full priced games.

It works the other way. People like it as it's snappy, polished and you can lark about on it for 20 minutes then fuck off and do something else. If people are loving the score chasing good on them, have fun.

Opinions, arseholes, horse, courses.

I won the week 1 challenge but yeah week 2 i think i'm 9th place (but 1st on my friends list this time!).

Unfortunately i don't see how i can get into the 20k score without having my bonus points x2 etc . I might be able to upgrade some things although i'm hoping out my 10 rockets will give me something good when i get enough gems.

As you play, your parts 'level up', netting you more points for the same thing though, right? Doesn't that make high score chasing a bit bogus?

(Still, not as egregious as some. I remember EAs take on Bejeweled where you would get some random slot machine type bonus at the end, which sometimes was just some random shit like a cat's head which would shoot out lasers destroying the entire screen and increase your score tenfold. Which was pretty awesome, I have to admit, but totally stupid from a scoring POV as it was randomly awarded)

When I see the high scores ( currently 27,000 in tier 4) it makes me not really want to try :( that's 10k more than what I've got and unless I have the kart to 3x multiply there really isnt much I can do about it.

I guess I'll drop to a lower tier next week and have more chance then.

Ive been playing this non-stop this weekend, and cleared all of the cups in the New York Tour. Not completed, but made it through (with a gold pass) and mopped up all of the items on the way. Still got the final crates (with the best upgrade tickets) left but given how it seems impossible to score high enough to get all stars on some tracks like NYM withouth the rarest of items, my only option is to try and get the stars from the Tour challenges but I dont think even thats enough.

Theres that, and there are the rubies which cost a ridiculous fortune, and there is the daily upgrade maximum, and a couple of other annoying things about the game. A bunch of outdated remnants from previous generations of mobile games, if you can use that term. The Gold Pass is just fine, no need for any of that other rubbish. The Mario pack I dont mind, at least you get exactly what you pay for. They should have done that with all of the inventory, more or less. Either with ingame coins, or at a fixed price of real cash. Im going to sub for one more month and see how it works out with the next Tour. Ive gotten everything so far without paying for anything else than the sub (which is still in trial period) and if it continues like that Im going to just ignore all of the other stuff and enjoy the game. Because I havent played a Mario Kart since the Wii U one, and before that MK6 I think on the DS. So many of the tracks are very distant memories, or brand new, and theyve done a hell of a job making the controls feel great on a phone. I didnt think Id say that, but there you go.

Yeah i've put some serious time into it. I have finished all the cups but the last cup (Metal Mario Cup) i am struggling to get many stars due to the much higher score requirement.

The past few cups have definitely had the difficulty amped up (it's only the last few i haven't fully completed).

However, to get those scores I need to have the new kart and well, the weekly cup is a no go for me this week to the extreme high scores in my tier 4.

I still enjoy it and you can totally enjoy the game without buying a single thing, but if you want to complete EVERY cup it does seem you need to have at least some decent karts to do that.

Yeah they are WAY too expensive.

Basically if you win 20 rubies in the weekly tournaments, you are winning about 12 quids worth of them!

10 turns on the pipe for £25? That is really , really pushing it. This should be £5 max (and even thats too greedy).

It's not a surprise this isn't doing that well for monitisation and i really hope Nintendo realizes how greedy they are being and drops the prices.

Yeah sitting at 19k in Tier 4 here, with the next player 2500 points ahead and of course the 25k+ scores at the top.. but I dont mind that, Im not playing this to be on top of rankings. As long as I have fun unlocking stuff and I dont have to pay any more than the sub each month Im okay with it. In fact, Ive never used this many combinations of karts, drivers, and tracks in any other MK game before I think, and its been great to just try and top my own scores and get those 5 stars on each track.

Got 13/20 out of the drivers available now, which isnt too bad I think. Got Peachette from a pipe draw and Metal Mario from the gold pass, and then a few super rares like Yoshi from the pass and Diddy K, Daisy, and Toadette from the pipes and a bunch of other decent items. Donkey Kong is 3000 coins in the store today but I dont think I will be able to get it, still missing 2000 coins which I could probably grind out together with a x2 coin rush .. but I dont think I can be arsed this time. This is where I would have chosen to pay (~2 - 3 pounds) to own it, if that was possible.

I've been enjoying the game for what it is. It absolutely doesn't compare to the proper Mario Kart games, not even the worst of them (64) but chaining trick combos together is satisfying all the same.

I've completed all but the last two cups (where the point goals for five stars spike far higher than before) and unlocked all the wee present boxes. I've still not managed to unlock any of the top tier characters other than the guaranteed Metal Mario (from the gold pass). I'm not willing to pay any of the (wildly priced) MTX. I feel like those last two cups might indicate how much tighter things might get for folk playing for free.

It's a shame there are so many layers of random chance impacting the scoring. From obtaining good items mid race to how aggressive the CPU is or even obtaining the high earning characters in the first place. I've tried a track a few times and fell a little short of the point total only to later get three frenzies in a single run and thrash the threshold by thousands. It's daft. It would be cool to have some stat-locked events where everyones on an even playing field but I guess that's not what this game is about.

This is my experience as well. The last few cups are definitely aimed at a higher level, and it doesn't help that the AI of the bots was also made more aggressive in turn.

Still, it’s been a fun experience overall. I'm having more fun with this than with Super Circuit, and it's down to the combo system and the just-one-more-go nature of two-lap races.

I really wish it had time trial and battle events as well, though. Randomness is a fundamental element in modern Mario Kart games, but it’s exacerbated in Tour. The fact that everything has to come together at the right time, including fevers/frenzies, can become frustrating, and I suspect that multiplayer is not going to make it any better.

More variety would be more than welcome.

I ended up biting and buying the pass. I'll use the 2 week free trial - at least this has given me a bunch of unlocks and should last for the tokyo cup.

200cc seems a little too fast - i did worry i wouldn't be able to go back to 150cc after playing it but whilst i do believe it allows you to carry your combos better, i didn't find controlling my kart was as good.
