ADK collection on PS4. (Collection of 5 games)

https://store.playstation.com/en-gb/product/EP0576-CUSA04151_00-SLPS259060000001

(Taken from the Japanese PS2)

I own a few neo geo hamster ports, but this is one of several put on by SNK.

Garou motw. Kof97 (I love) kof98. Last blade 2. Metal slug anthology. Fatal fury battle archives.

These are my Snk owned games on psn...most of them bought in sales.

You can get match-ups on Garou, kof97 and last blade 2....about as frequently as sf anniversary anyway!

Had a blast through the night/into the morning with neo geo stuff.

I started and then restarted Phantasy Star II on the PSP Sega Mega Drive Collection yesterday. I'm not very far in, mostly because, as I said, I restarted. I did some grinding to begin with to try and buy Nei a weapon. Bought a knife but she couldn't equip it and nor would the main character (who is now Dann rather than Duan). Its ridiculously vague on where you have to go and the random battles leave you rather battered. If it weren't for the fact I played PSO on Dreamcast (for a ridiculous amount of time) then I'd have no idea that a monomate is the in-game healing item or that Nei is a Newearl so will be able to use Techs and thus also heal me. But none of that can be done in battle either, so yeah, not sure what to make of it thus far.

PS2 is sadly a bit broken. Very grind heavy, difficulty all over the shop, and there are massive inconsistencies and bugs throughout the whole game which just smell of it needing more time in the oven. The dungeon mazes are pretty awful, too, particuarly near the end - they're bloody hard and frustrating even *with* maps.

I played a ROMhacked version on MD which had a vast amount of bugfix patches applied, and it was still a bit messy. Posted updates as I went on this thread (spoilers, obv).

PS1 and PS4 are the best ones, by a long chalk.

I'm a bit bored of Golden Axe already so have been playing Sanrio Smashball (SFC) and Dragon's Fury (MD).

I've made my usual kid in a sweet shop mistake and have also given some of the Wonderboy/Monster World games a quick spin. I got stuck fairly quickly on the arcade game included in the SVC: Monster World collection. Which game in the series is worth persevering with for a noob?

I'm already getting pissed off with it, I'm lost in the first "dungeon" and can't find where to go/where I've come from and made the stupid mistake of only having one save file.

Achievement unlocked!

First time I’ve ever finished any version of Outrun! First time I’ve actually made it into stage 5, come to think of it. Feels good!

I have a nice routine going where I play three rounds - one to each of the arcade tunes (Step On Beat can do one). It takes about 15 minutes, and is easy to squeeze into the evening.

I think I’ll keep it up and see if I can collect the other endings.

The mazes are very, very difficult. I'd recommend a guide for them, and when you get the the bit with the dams look up the best order to do them. It is very grindy too, but that's made easier on Mega Drive Classics as there's a fast forward button. Do stick with it though!

I completed Bonanza Bros for what I think might be the first time today. Thought it was much longer than it was - just 10 levels. Moved on to Story of Thor (which Mega Drive Classics insists on calling Beyond Oasis regardless of which region I choose) now, which is incredibly janky. Don't remember that! The sprites are too big for the play area too, and the combat is shite - not lease because of woeful collision "detection".

“Story of Thor” is the stupidest name ever for an Arabian Nights themed game, so I approve of this forced rebranding. You wouldn’t call a Viking game “The Adventures of Aladdin”.

I don’t remember it being janky, but haven’t tried it in years.

Regarding PS2, for the later dungeons I found I had to print maps, then solve them with a pencil like conventional puzzle, then actually play the game.

Worth noting the game shipped with a book of maps in all territories, even Japan, so either they planned them to be solved with a map from the start, or they realised they’d screwed up.

I’m glad I finished PS2, but I’ll never go back to it, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone other than hardcore Phantasy Star fans who have already played 1 and 4.

Currently playing Alundra (PS1), which I've never played before, but as a Zelda fan I felt I needed to.

(To my shame, I did play the much-maligned sequel back in the day and quite enjoyed it.)

It is very similar to classic 2D Zelda so far, but with darker storytelling, and more vertical level design due to the included 'jump' ability, which makes navigation a little confusing. Also, whoever designed the button configuration needs a stern talking to.

Still trudging through the last dungeon of FFIV. Unclear if I’ll defeat the final boss or the sunk cost fallacy first.

My party are now borderline invincible and keep levelling up, but the enemies still take so damn long to kill. The B. Dragon enemies are the absolute worst - they have about a billion HP, can’t be run from, have high defence and represent zero threat whatsoever. Each time I get one (or worse, a pair!) in a random battle, I know that’s five minutes of my scant gaming time gone.

On the plus side, the bosses guarding the ultimate weapons can be fun little puzzles - trying to kill Plague in 10 seconds by throwing everything at it, and working out how to batter Wyvern with reflected versions of Flare and Holy. The game is very decent about putting save points immediately before them, too.

Nearly there, though. I will beat this thing, so I never have any temptation to play it again.

Target Renegade on the Spectrum - Hadn't played this for years and I was delighted to rediscover what a fun, responsive little brawler it is. The true Spectrum version of Double Dragon, basically. Used to be able to complete this one, can't any more (yet).

Speedball 2 on the Amiga - Prepping this for its debut on Antstream gave me another chance to win the league, something I never managed to do back in the day. When I first started playing it I was disappointed at how crap I'd become in my old age - couldn't even consistently beat Revolver in the first game. After a good few hours, I've shaken off the dust and am getting better and better - taking on the top teams with upgraded players is still difficult but its a very rewarding and satisfying game.

Dungeon Master (Amiga) - Another one I've never finished, but I started a new save and delved into the dungeon once more. Managed to find my way back to the level below the firestaff level pretty quickly, which is the deepest I've ever gone - getting a good feeling about this attempt.

I'm doing a 20th anniversary (for me) Final Fantasy VII playthrough on Switch as I've never finished it. It's one of those I must've started half a dozen times over the years and except for my first time where I got right to the end, I never got more than 10 hours in. I'm going to try extra hard this time.

I don't know if it helps or not that I started Mother 3 again this morning too. Best JRPG.

Thank goodness. Last boss was quite fun, although the fact that he was a 20 minute walk from the last save point was slightly anxiety inducing.

The ending sequence just kind of reinforced the fact that the cast are pretty dull and uninspiring, but it was always about the mechanics not the plot, anyway.

Some unexpected nice Mode 7 stuff at the end, including a sort of Star Wars crawl.

There’s that one off the list, anyway. Might stick to Arcadey stuff on the Mega SG for a while and play a bit more guitar, rather than starting another RPG

Save point?

You know you can save anywhere with the Visiphone, right?

A) That’s FFIV, not PS2

B) In the original PS2, you can’t even get the Visiphone until you have Shir and get her to L10. They give it to you from the start in most ports.

Ah, thought you were still on about PS2!

I’ve only played versions which are basically the original rom

Zolyx - this month's Lemon64 high score game. Tougher than your average Qix game.

Castle of Illusion - Mega Drive. Playing this and the not-so-great Mickey's Ultimate Chalenge which is like an arcade adventure where you wander about using objects which you collect by completing mini-games. Struggling to finish Castle of Illusion which I'm sure was a breeze when I was younger.
