even getting stuck with a plasma grenade or supercombined won't kill you outright on Heroic

What? That's not right man, a plasma grenade stick should be death. I might bump it up to legendary when I go all in tomorrow, I found the intro too easy.

What a clusterfuck this is to actually download and play. After choosing the campaign on the game pass app a few days ago I stupidly assumed it had done what I asked. I quickly checked my X yesterday and it wanted to do an update so I let it, thinking that tonight when I got home it would be ready to go.

Turns out it actually downloaded the multiplayer which I have zero interest in. So now, when everyone in the house is streaming something different online I’ve got to download the campaign at dead slow speeds.

Actually I just put it on and those 3 elites at the end of one of the first missions were pretty tough, fun fight, I grappled into one and threw a grenade which stuck the red dude behind him, total fucking fluke lol! This is great!

Big yikes at that performance hit when you reach the outdoors on PC. Thinking I might have been better off dusting off the Series S.

I’m only seeing about 10fps difference between them.

I had buttery smooth 120fps with headroom up until that point, but the moment I got outside it just went all over the place with stutters and drops into the 50's.

Damn that's harsh! I'm not outside yet, it's staying solid 60 so far.

I haven't really messed with settings much to be fair. Most stuff was left on default as it was looking and running great at 1440p. I just was not expecting such a stark difference.

Anyway, game itself is really great. Guns feel fun, the combat is frantic and tactical. Liking it lots ATM.

This is nice. As soon as I got outside I fell in love. I’m back in Halo. A massive free roam Halo. A big playground of Halo. It’s fucking great.

Also really happy to see this thread move on from yesterday which was a series of middle aged men panicking about how many GB of update had come through etc!

It's definitely had the edges nicely rounded off - they've got rid of all the causes of instant-death, no instant-kill snipers or swords, even getting stuck with a plasma grenade or supercombined won't kill you outright on Heroic.

I have died to the bosses a lot though.

I def can't tell much difference between Normal and Heroic. Perhaps everything is a bit smudged by the BR etc.

The enemies still put a a strong fight on Normal, I'd say that overall Infinite is a little harder on Normal than other Halos but then again individual play styles prob come off differently anyway.

One thing I’m very impressed by - I parked a Warthog near a building, went inside and did the business (second boss) and came back for my wheels - and it was still there! Any other game would have reset that shit after a couple of minutes, so I’m really appreciating the permanence.

Ok I got there and my GPU usage went from 70% to 90%, maintained 60fps though. But oh my god it's so much fun, proper open style halo fights, with added grapple for crazy melee and grenade kills. This is already so much better than 5.

Oh man does this look and feel great. Running brilliantly at 4K60 everything max (wtf were DF on about?) on a 77" C1. It's a visual treat.

More importantly it feels amazing, the grapple man, the fucking grapple.

I can feel an all night session coming on.

Have had a good time with this today. It does just enough to invoke a BOTW feel. It’d be nice if they had actually tried to put a puzzle or two in, I think.

I found it pretty funny that as I decimated this base, there were a few enemies on the other side of this gate I’ve got my crosshair on, who seemed blissfully unaware of the absolute chaos going on right behind them, even saying stuff like “the pack wins again!” as I blew up an enormous fuel tank:

Oh, and the sound in this is fantastic. Playing with headphones is a must.

Played this for 90 minutes this evening. Very good first impressions. It looks great and runs wonderfully on my Series X. I haven't played a Halo game since Reach, but this feels slightly heavier and more crunchy than I remember, which is no bad thing. It reminds me of Doom 2016. The music is also very effective so far, although I'm still waiting for the 'AAAAaaaAHHHHaaaa-aaaaAHHHHHaaaa' to come in and hit me square in the feels.

Excellent stuff so far! Looking forward to touching down on that big open ring :sherlock:

I definitely agree with some of the criticisms of this, but I've been having a great time overall so far. Wasn't sure about the ammo crates myself at first, but have still found myself changing weapons a lot. But honestly, what shot it straight to a solid 100 out of 10 was creating my own murder bus and just rolling around the map wiping out bands of Banished. I haven't made much progress with the actual campaign as yet as a result. I regret nothing. 1846848768_HaloBus.thumb.PNG.2293bd7c02ab35df5ff999784b0135d9.PNG

The ammo crates? What as a Halo noob am I missing here?

Previously in halo games you'd have to scavenge for dropped weapons of the same type as the two you have to pick up ammo.

In this there are ammo stations that refill a class of weapon as well.

Loving this. I'm doing all the things on the map because it's just so fun jumping in and fighting everything. Love the random scattered marines around, squadding up is the best part of halo. Got my first skull too...

Spoiler

On top of the prison tower place, took some pretty tricky grappling to get up. There's some other Easter egg stuff up there too, well worth a visit!

Been playing this on and off all day. Only just got past Tremonius and landed on Zeta. Thought the opening was excellent, real old school Halo stuff and a good introduction to the rappel thingy.

The combat is wonderful and the Grunts have got their tragi-comedy personas back. 343’s combat has always felt weightier than Bungie’s but here they’ve made it feel like Halo again. Literally combat evolved.

Looks amazing, sounds amazing, plays amazing. Just sort out the weird framerate drops in cutscenes and reloading.

Right, now let’s go and have an explore.
