Halo Infinite - OUT NOW - no campaign spoilers pls

You know, I really enjoyed this at launch. I've no idea how you can funnel that much money into something and have so many delays however, the paucity of content's what stopped me playing the multiplayer. A few shitty helmet gubbins you'll never use isn't much of a reason to return for their events.

Don't get me wrong, I get playing for enjoyment's sake rather than a hamster wheel of collectibles, but I also usually bounce once I feel like any MP's getting too familiar and that I could be using my time on something new instead.

Still nothing on any campaign updates/tweaks/expansions then?

Wake me when you need me have got something worth my time.

If it takes them this long to get new multiplayer stuff out, it’ll take them years to bring something new to the campaign.

The studio will be shuttered before that.

There must be serious questions being raised about 343 now internally.

Especially when they could make the internet explode with a jpeg and the words “Halo by iD software” on it.

I don’t understand it, because no matter what people ultimately thought of 4 and 5, they were much better handled than this. I’d love to hear the inside story.

Yeah would be a great Schrier piece or someone like that. It’s deffo lost a few big names over the years but I firmly believe studios can ride that stuff out if they’re ran well enough.

Schreier already did his big Halo Infinite story and unfortunately it was a puff piece.

Guy definitely has studios he likes and studios he doesn’t. Of course, this article was also influenced by the bafflingly high scores this game got when it was released in a wholly unfinished state last year.

Is there a chance you'd also explode iD by doing that?

I wouldn't mind seeing their take on Halo but surely people take jobs at iD because they want to work on stuff like Doom. If they wanted to make Halo then they'd already be at 343 or Certain Affinity who are working some new mode for Infinite.

As incredible as the further delay to co-op is, I actually have no problem with it. It’s been less than a year since I played and finished it, so I’m not that bothered to play it again, and actually, doing it again in the winter makes more sense.

But fucking hell. Fucking hell!

I just mean from a simplified corpo shareholder “why aren’t we making more money?” point of view. I’m sure it would cause all sorts of issues.

Saying that though I’m playing Doom Eternal at the mo and with all the platforming etc in that they could probably do a pretty good job with a grappling hook!

I don't even think it would be an interesting or illuminating read. Just a depressing story of corporate mismanagement, terrible decisions and wrong turns that ends with one of the most loved games of all time an absolute shell of its former glory. It would make you angry and incredulous to discover what actually happened to reduce Halo to this.

It's unbelievable that the best reason to own an Xbox has been completely gutted and fucked inside out like this. Just fucking sad.

No split screen because of a lack / refocus of resources? How? It’s Microsoft. They can afford the time and money. There’s something more difficult going on behind the scenes surely.

Regardless, for the end user and especially the long term halo fan it’s just reaaaaaally bad news.

Why would they dump it entirely?

I wonder if they just could not get it working on the One and that's why they gave up on it.

That’s my guess as to why the whole thing is a mess. I reckon it all would have gone a lot smoother if they hadn’t been crippled by having to get it running on last gen machines. It should have been the killer game that made people want to upgrade their console and should have been designed to show off their power, not scaled back to accommodate old tech.

Yes maybe. But that would just require an admission of the fact. There’d be some unrest but you’d still be able to do it on S/X.

I’m thinking it’s worse. Staff problems, general lack of high-up support for 343i because of the delays and problems etc. A lot of Infinite’s staff were short-term contracted. Perhaps it’s all been a bit tarred.

But what do I know.

I’m properly gutted about this.

This is where I keep going back to. It cost a rumoured $500 million by all accounts and whilst the campaign was great and multiplayer had a really strong start I can’t see how they have so little to show for it.

The travesty of what MS has allowed to happened to Halo.

Halo should be respected on the level of Zelda and Mario, and they are treating it like Sonic.

I get Covid. Sure. But to launching this whilst foolish enough to say things like 'This is the foundation of Halo for the next years' crushes my faith in MS ability to manage studios. How can they not see that 343 can't cope with this. How can they keep messing this messaging up?

What hurts the most, is that they have the core of a fantastic game.

Not to mention the Battle Royale they’re apparently working on, I can’t see that denting Warzone 2 or Apex when 343 can’t even handle updating the base game regularly, they’re just throwing good money after bad at this point, surely?

Yeah, high staff turnover and mismanagement would definitely play a part here. I've noticed from my Twitter follows that the associate creative lead on Halo Infinite - my design lead on a FPS project at Argonaut (who fucking loved Halo) went on to help form Rocksteady, then moved onto WB before 343i is now creative lead for a company published by NetEase.

Might give that a try...

It won't really get the blood going until you hit Special Agent / Perfect Agent.

Obviously it's a massively different game to Halo with a lot less hilarious chaos, but at least the split-screen co-op is fun (and exists).

There's also the counter co-op where one of you can Agent Smith into all the bad guys!

The gun play has yet to be bettered, IMHO. CS:GO comes close.

The soundtrack is fucking excellent, as well.
