Dying Light 2

It looks a lot like the first game which is no bad thing, more of the same, the running/sliding animation on the players arms and legs is super shit though. It’s a very unique game and I love the parkour and the scavenging, looking forward to it.

I remember I rather enjoyed the original. Just have to make a decision between Elden Ring, Horizon 2 and this. Right now, it's Horizon 2 (yeah, I am rather indifferent towards Elden Ring but that's maybe because I have barely absorbed any news after the reveal. No previews, no beta, no interviews).

Sadly this and Horizon are on the back burner as I'm not sure how finances will be this year, unexpected expense on the house and my wife wanting a holiday later in the year means I might have to suck it up and stick to my backlog for a bit (though I do have pokemon coming as it's already paid for).

But I must admit this look's great, I have been playing the first game (a bit of co op as well) and I think it's great even if it is a little clunky.

The first Dying Light is 99% incredible as a co-op game, just with a shitty finale slightly spoiling things. Bit rough around the edges, but absolutely bags of fun and still incredibly good looking considering its age. I'm quietly optimistic about the sequel just being a better looking and more refined version of the original. That'd be perfect.

Just a heads up, looks like quite a few people have got hold of this and putting footage out there. So be wary if you want don't want any of the story spoilt before launch.

Any hints on quality or reviews?

Development hell and their big selling piint was getting on board a writer who was outed as a creepazoid during development (and I think maybe quietly got rid of, not sure) and their marketing seems to be focussing on look how much Ubisoft bloat is in our game as if its a good thing. Can't say I'm expecting great things.

I do believe it is the choices made that can make or break this. From what I remember, it was pushed as a "your choice really (for real this time) matters and the city changes according to the paths you take. Side with the police and the city turns into a DMZ, side with the rebels and you'll see plants and shiny happy people" type of thing. So it'll either be this or nonsense Ubi bloat with the facade of choice.

The first game was great. I think the only real let downs for me were the sections where they took control away from you, because it's a video game and so we can't have you grapple over a wall when the big bad boss has you trapped, sorry. You need to sit here and have a really boring melee fight with him.

If they open the game up so you can really just approach those bits how you'd like, I'll be over the moon.

Bug Alert!

If your tolerance for bugs is low, I do not recommend jumping into Dying Light 2 on day one. Or day 10. Maybe day 30? I was able to play it to completion, but only barely: leading up to launch it is absolutely drowning in a sea of upsetting technical issues, whether it’s crashing (which happened to me dozens of times in my more than 80 hours with it on Xbox Series X and to others at IGN on PlayStation 5 and PC), all dialogue stopping during cutscenes, all audio being replaced with a loud screeching noise, getting locked out of quests because a character won’t let you talk to him or being unable to finish because the objective never spawned in, uneven framerates making me seasick, and too many more to list here. Most glitches are temporary annoyances or even amusing wonkiness, but some are more dire – one IGN editor playing on PS5 had his entire save file corrupted, leaving him with a never-ending loading screen and locking him out of his save pending an upcoming patch.

Normally I expect a certain lack of polish in ambitious, open-world games, but even with my expectation for jankiness set to maximum, Dying Light 2 has been really, really rough. The longer I played, the more frequent the issues seemed to become; by the end I was having to quit out and reboot multiple times per hour, and breathed a huge sigh of relief when credits rolled and something hadn’t catastrophically broken my save file. In terms of stability issues and the danger of losing progress, it’s been considerably more severe than our experience with the PC version of Cyberpunk 2077, where the bugs we hit were mostly visual in nature. Techland is aware of all of this and is reportedly hard at work on patches to address it, but if history is any indication it’s going to take more than a few real-world day-night cycles to sort out this many issues.

From IGN.

Pre-order cancelled. Was just looking for an excuse, really. Will pick it up when it's been polished up a bit.

One challenger eliminated! Horizon and Elden Ring remain!
