Dying Light 2

EG don't make it sound so bad:

There are stumbles here and there - including infrequent technical issues, which again seem synonymous with the territory of a game of this scope, with models infrequently popping awkwardly into each other or levitating a few feet from the ground - but they're infrequent enough to be overpowered by the ambition of everything else that's in play.

Overall "recommended."

Dying Light 2 has an aesthetic that's straight out of a second tier Xbox 360 game. It's light on innovation but Dying Light 2 has the scope and breadth of your modern triple-A, rippling with systems and overwhelming in size. It looks and feels like the most ambitious Xbox 360 game ever made, and I'm fairly certain I mean that as high praise.

An unusual point of comparison, but the review makes it sound interesting (albeit probably longer than I have time for at the moment - twelve hours just to get out of the opening area?!).

The switch version of the first game felt like a 360 era game (I think it actually was). It doesn’t sound as flattering as the reviewer thinks.

To be fair to Techland, they're not exactly the most experiened or AAA of producers and yet they've managed to craft a series that takes the best elements of Capcom's Dead Rising and DICEs Mirrors edge (and both of whom are generally considered AAA) and created a game thats seemingly perceived better the Ubisoft's supposed AAA efforts which i think EG are trying to point out (not to mention the DL world being much smaller although that can be levelled at any open world game against AC).

DL never really felt AAA but it plays a very solid game in an rather interesting enviroment - one thats often overlooked and arguably considered rather dull - that is bits of Indian Asia (Mumbai) and Istanbul.

I skipped Dying Light 1 because of the mixed review scores, but since then I've heard such good things about it, and their brief foray into battle royale showcased how fun and freeing the gameplay is. So I'm very much tempted by this. I've just read a bunch of the lower score reviews, and the main issues seem to be:

- poor story/characters/narrative impact

- long opening section

- bugs

However every review says the parkour and freedom is amazing. Combat opinions differ, some people think its great, others find it too repetative. Some reviewers think the overall gameplay gets too repetitive and the amount of fetch quests/A>B travel is tedious. However others don't seem to give a crap about that, because the core gameplay is so fun that it doesn't matter what the objective is. The game seems to improve a lot after the opening segment (10-12 hours), and a lot of reviewers say that just going off doing side stuff is fun. Out of these middling reviews, most people say they wouldn't want to sink 50-500 hours in it.

Honestly though, if the gameplay and setting are good enough, I don't really care about the story. The parkour is supposed to be awesome and that alone is enough to sell me on it, zombies and combat is a nice bonus. Bugs are being ironed out already - and I don't really care about the huge length/size because you can just do the main story and do side content until you get bored. So right now I feel like its probably worth taking a punt on.

'Rippling with systems and overwhelming in size' - he might mean that as high praise but its having the opposite effect on me.
