Yeah I felt the same the first time. Retrying for S rank a bit later was a doddle tho, gerbera's dodge cancel works a charm for constantly hookshotting his face and avoiding big attacks, and overture's lightning does a good chunk of damage to him each time. You're not supposed to 'deflect' his attacks, I don't think!

Spoiler

You can parry his fireballs by rocket punch surfing. :)

Seems you can parry them with pretty much any standard devil bringer attack.

Just got up to the first boss as V. Haven’t got a clue what I’m doing with him. Just button mashing at the moment.

The Artemis boss was good. Felt like I sort of actually knew what I was doing but I’m still button mashing too much.

There’s so much this game doesn’t tell you, like instant charging your exceed.

I haven’t bought that but if you rev as soon as you’ve hit someone you get one bar of exceed. That just sounds like an upgrade.

I’ve got a 12 hour shift today. Hoping to watch some tutorial videos as right now I feel like I’m playing street fighter and the only move I know is the hadouken.

I’ve moved guns/ranged to RT, normal attack to X and devil bringer to Y and that makes it feel a little bit better.

It’s definitely worth getting into the habit of pressing L2 after each attack as Nero, the damage is noticeably different IMO. Just be aware that it changes some moves properties.

I’m not sure what tutorials you’ll find that will be useful (not that I’ve looked) I just imagine most tutorials will explain more advanced techniques.

Ask away any thoughts, theories or questions here. I’m sure people will be happy to help

Up to mission 16 on Son of Sparda now, I’m not convinced I will have all upgrades by the end TBH. The final items are super expensive and there’s 3 characters to buy for.

Also in SoS difficulty, there’s a lot less Devil Breakers to pick up. Some levels I don’t think have any. Strengthens the need to buy load outs for the mission for sure. I’m still being a little stingy on buying them at the minute as I want all upgrades first.

Also, I disagree that the Level Design is bland. I’m regularly wandering around and seeing collectible items that I have no idea how to reach and require exploration. I also just did a section where I needed to ride punchline like Tony Hawk’s Skateboarding to access an area that had the secret mission for the level.

This one is pretty good. Some Dante weapon spoilers and one boss spoiler in the last few minutes, but pretty much everything in it is new to me, especially jump cancels.

I don’t know if this stuff is explained in game but I haven’t seen any of it.

Man, Son of Sparda mode is so good, having Nero's full capability from the start is so nice!

Played up to Goliath, didn't mange to parry with overture, but did manage to tennis his fireballs back at him a couple of times.  Also, ng+ spoiler :

Spoiler

Devil trigger throwing him while he was stunned did not disappoint

Having said all this, I want to continue SoS mode on PC, so will pimp my trading thread if anyone wants to buy this ps4 disc from me! ;)

Incredibly, I think I'm going to end up holding fire on starting Sekiro in order to have another couple of run throughs of this. I've been pretty lukewarm on it previously; partly because it can feel like you're learning to play about forty different videogames all at once; but now I'm starting to feel more confident, the urge to master* this bastard is growing strong.

*become moderately less shit.

So up to Mission 19 and it’s my first time really messing about with Royal Guard but FFFFUUUUUUUU!! Have yet to beat the boss as I am refusing to use power ups / continues so it’s either a single health bar or bust and it’s like DMC3 brought up to date for this generation. Absolutely glorious!!

Ha! I was the same but resigned myself the Trickster to do it. There’s an achievement linked to doing missions 19 and 20 with no continues.

Great video of high level play of that mission

After using up 6 gold orbs and one set of red orbs (I might have used more, but I had none left by this point due to spending them mostly on upgrades), I checked to see if difficulty achievements stack (they do not), so decided to go back and start doing missions on Human so I can purchase more upgrades and practice combos.

The only problem with this plan is that enemies take so little damage that they tend to die too quickly.

I did learn that if you shoot the second boss's glowing purple things, they turn into anchors that you wire snatch to climb your way up to the boss when she goes up high (button-mashed that one and still got an S rank. At least S ranking a level doesn't require you to S rank each criterion like you had to do in DMC4 and possibly previous games too, because that involved chasing around after red orbs whilst being mindful of the time limit, and sometimes deliberately taking the wrong path in a maze to get more enemies and orbs).

I completed my first run through on human and thoroughly enjoyed it, although my skills are still weak. Kicked off a second run through on Son of Sparda (as that seemed to be the only choice) but I think I need to do a second run through on Devil Hunter. Hopefully one or two runs will up my skill level enough.

what a game though.

I played on Devil Hunter, and now im blasting through human, to try and get all upgrades (well maybe not the ones that cost 3 million)

Need to get Dante to his full potential, as he is clearly the best. I wish they would allow you to play as Dante through every mission, as he is my favourite by far. I know it wouldnt work with the story... but surely it could be something that's added, after completing the story.

It's weird. With DMC4, I preferred Nero because he could pull enemies towards him, aerial combos were a lot smoother and his Devil Bringer was frankly overpowered at times, but this time Dante seems like the more fun character. I'm still no good at jump cancelling or switching styles on the fly, but I did manage to get a reasonable combo going where I smacked someone up in the air, did a sword combo on them (all Swordmaster), then switched to Gunslinger to do the spinning downwards bulletstorm thing, then back to Swordmaster to do the Danse Macabre combo on them to finish.

Also, smacking people in the face with the bikes never gets old.

Despite saying I'd hold off til I get PC version, I've continued on Son of Sparda, about half way through now, it's a lot trickier in places!  Feels like this is the 'default' difficulty if you know what I mean.

Finally bought enemy step for everyone!   Good grief it's fun, if confusing.

Anyone had much luck playing with Nero's 'Exceed' on the R2 button, which you get after completing the game??

Spoiler

It feels like it should be possible to attack and press L2 & R2 together to be able to both exceed and smack them with devil wings, but I end up just devil bringing the enemies most of the time :(

That has DLC written all over it. A bit like how Vergil was introduced in DMC4 Special Edition as being playable all the way through even though it had absolutely zero link to the story.

Even after a lot of hours play Dante is still like a dark art to me. I understand all his tools and what they do but right now I have no idea if I am changing styles / weapons at the right time and what is the most effective attacks for specific enemies and bosses. This is exactly what I wanted though. Even Nero, who in DMC4 was pretty basic compared to Dante now has a wealth of crazy options on the Devil Breakers so the replay value is incredible.

Thinking back to the hours I spent on specific DMC3 bosses I can already see this is going to demand that same attention. I could go on for pages and pages about the system, the styles, the weapons and how the high praise the game has received is still not scratching the surface of what they have actually achieved here. Release all the DLC you want Capcom and I will smear it all over my face!

I just cant wait to smash demons faces in bloody palace with Dante.... no loading on the levels, no cut scenes... just pure unadulterated demon slaying violence.

(the loading times between customising and starting the missions is a little long for my liking)

I think this is possible, there are some 'super' versions of characters you unlock later, which I presume can be used on any mission (given one of them at least isn't a 'main' character of the game!)

Care to elaborate? Do you mean the Super EX outfits? I thought these were just extra outfits? Would love to be proved wrong.
