Devil May Cry 5

I believe the trick to getting good scores with V is to set up all the enemies so they’re almost ready to go into their stun state and then hit them, then cane them all in quick succession.

This is just my take from what I’ve played, but I’m sure the biggest boost to rank is when you stab the enemy with your cane.

Yeah, that’s true.

Also, if you have the luxury of not having to attack all out, start using each character one after the other rather than simultaneously - using the bird to knock people into the air and combo them with Shadow, etc.

Easier said aid than done, though.

I only used V where it was mandatory during my first run as I wanted to see how Dante and Nero had changed as much as possible but the biggest thing I found was timing. You often have to allow Griffon and Shadow time to position themselves before commands activate and if you are mashing buttons then it will have them constantly doing stuff but also have a lot of redundant button presses where they are positioning themselves, morphing or just doing a different attack.

It’s a brilliant shift in mechanics where range, position and the status of your weapons / familiars are as important as the attacks you perform. Getting V right in the middle of the action for example, so that the enemies are drawn to him freeing G and S up for uninterrupted attacks is beautiful but means you then need to add keeping V safe on top of tracking everything else. Sure you can keep V at range and let G and S soak everything up until the executions but it’s another layer of strategy and style to what is alresdy a superb character.

More play needed for sure and even half way SoS mode I still don’t feel like I have scratched the surface!

Don’t think so. They don’t have the kind of move unlock options like Nightmare has where you can mount him and then control his attacks.

Ive been expiremering with a combination of DT triggering Shadow and / or Griffon and then using that as an opportunity to read so I can try and maintain the DT gauge as long as possible while they are both on boosted auto attack. Still finding it difficult to find the right positioning of V to make the most of this but will keep trying :)

Probably asking a bit much here but is there any way to get friends in to your game instead of randoms? I’m hoping there is going to be some kind of DLC where the coop options just get blown wide open. Thinking a coop session in the spirit of one of the end credits sections is making me a little moist. They could make that happen couldn’t they. Couldn’t they?!

Just been beaten about 10 times in a row by the Mission 16 boss. I'm determined to not use continues or I'm just going to get smashed to pieces on whatever the next difficulty is.

Spoiler

King Cerberus

Got incredibly close to beating him but just couldn't do it. I think I should probably spend some orbs and upgrade my styles - definitely Trickster, as I'm doing a lot of dodging in this fight.

Couple things I remember using although to be fair I have only fought him once. Definitely a boss I want to spend a lot of time with though...

Spoiler

Aerial rave to the faces. Repeat! Swordmaster style to maximise the aerial options and charge SDT to use whenever you can. I think I managed to get a full SDT and then a DT to finish him off as I ended up taking a lot of damage (no continues, just an almost max health bar reduced to a sliver) which boosted my DT gauge.

It is definitely one of those battles that I want to try several techniques on, like RG parries on every attack as its beautifully constructed and animated so deserves to have a fair bit of time put into it. I still have no idea just powerful the RG release and royal release moves are but if they are anything like DMC3 then proper use of them will obliterate almost any boss.

I think they’re pretty powerful. I used them on wotsit Angelo and he didn’t like them much at all.

I’m on Mission 18 and feeling quite conflicted about this. I really don’t feel like I’ve improved much over the course of the game. That’s in part due to 3 different characters, but also due to the level design not really giving you that much time to fight bog standard enemies. It’s starting to feel like a boss rush at the moment.

I also think the game does an absolutely abysmal job of teaching you how to play it. Void mode doesn’t even tell you if you’ve pulled off the move you’ve got selected! What a joke.

I’d like to say I’m going to go through it again but not sure I actually will.

NG+ spoilers!

Spoiler

Did someone here comment on NG+ Nero being a bit OP? After getting battered by Vergil in Mission 20 on Devil Hunter, even after 6 odd gold orbs, I noped out to Human, rinsed that (mostly S ranks, but a few As and Bs here and there), and now I'm moping up those few levels before going on to Devil Hunter to try and S rank all those. It feels like S rank is only based on your overall style rating this time, whereas before you were marked on completion time and collected red orbs, which made some levels very tedious indeed.

At the same time, I'm also trying out SoS and am up to Mission 4 now, mostly A ranks so far. I'm still button-mashing a teensy bit, but with Nero I'm trying to mix up the Devil Breakers and Devil Busters, as well as trying to remember to Devil Trigger and use Exceed for better style rankings (once in a while I remember to taunt), and I'm feeling more comfortable with his move-set and not getting hit. Like someone said (@robdood?), SoS feels like the proper difficulty and I think I'll be okay with it. Dante Must Die is going to be painful and I'm trying not to think of Hell and Hell...

What button configurations are you all using? I have a feeling that my setup isn't all that great (Blue Rose set to Left Trigger, Exceed on Right Trigger, Devil Trigger on LB and the get out of jail card or whatever it's actually called on the d-pad. I'm still getting used to that so I've inadvertently used the Devil Trigger when I just wanted to escape a grab attack but eh).

As for replayability, I'm having plenty of fun going through levels multiple times aiming for a higher style ranking or trying out different ways/orders of tackling enemies. My only real complaints are that I wish cut-scenes could be disabled entirely (might affect loading times between areas as a consequence?) as well as speeding up the damn Customisation load times, but at some point I'll manage to get all the upgrades and then this won't be a problem even though getting the super taunt for all three characters is going to take an age (apparently it's possible to grind a shit tonne of orbs in Mission 13, but I don't want to do that right now).

For DMC4, I got most of my Proud Souls via repeated plays of Bloody Palace mode, since it took me about 1-2 months of solid playing to clear it without using Super Nero. I just couldn't face doing the same for Dante - I learnt enough with Dante to S rank all the levels, but beyond that I didn't have the patience to go into more depth.

However, with DMC5 I think I will go for it, and if there's an achievement for clearing the DLC Bloody Palace mode with each of the three characters [possibly Vergil too], then I'm all in - Sekiro is just going to have to wait a little longer.

Expanding on my mind dump, although DMC4 was hailed as shit because of Nero, the lack of audio cues and nerfed Dante, it did the job for me*.

I played the absolute shit out of it for four months, bought DmC day one (the stupid weapon-specific enemies was a terrible idea, but it was accessible and far far less grindy than DMC4. Bloody Palace was a bit of a letdown though) and I've bought DMCV thinking I might just get properly stylish with Dante.

I've already changed styles far more then I ever did in DMC4 (Swordmaster all the way baby) and there's still a long way to go. I'm not sure I'll ever manage the jump-cancel infinite combos of legend but I'm happy to watch other people's videos on YouTube and enjoy vicariously.

* I keep eyeing up the special edition on the Bone, remind myself that I did everything on the 360 and I'm good, then wavering all over the damn place. Argh.

The special edition is on Game Pass.

I don't have Game Pass - this is possibly a good thing.

Meanwhile whilst I'm still having trouble S ranking the first Dante level, I've seen a guy beat the last two bosses with Dante on DMD taking zero damage. Might as well just give up now.

Assume he uses a mix of Royal Guard and Swordmaster? Absolute filth whatever he does no doubt!

Apparently all videos until recently have been people just spamming Royal Guard for days, which is no doubt boring to watch. This guy uses all four styles.

Mission 19 boss - Dante Must Die difficulty - no damage

What’s the gist on this then?

Pure action? No back tracking or shitty puzzles?

Pure action. A few really basic "puzzles" that even the protagonists complain about. Lots of crazy cutscenes. Best game in its genre, for me! I've never felt so badass (well actually, until Sekiro..)

I’m not sure how getting hit can be difficult to see or hear as it results in whatever attack or movement you were doing getting interrupted and often Dante / Nero / V getting staggered or knocked down. Is it more about the feedback just before you get hit?

On the enemies showing feedback when getting hit, a lot of them have either certain moves that stagger them or a number of hits they need to take before they get staggered, stunned, etc. Before that happens it may look like they are just walking through your attacks but every melee attack shows a flash of light and a slash across the enemy with gun shots showing more of a spark. Then of course there is the sound every distinct action and reaction has.

So can’t say I have noticed any lack of feedback during the action... it just takes some time to know what all the madness happening means :)

Well, yes, but also about the tactile and audible feedback. Would have love some sort of FPS-like feedback with more intense sounds or grunts.

You tried turning the music off? Or tweaked settings so the effects are made louder compared to music? Might help with the clarity of the key sound effects or at least let you focus on them for a bit and then stick the music back on.

I appreciate that is a bit like asking a DJ to mute the dance music but leave the strobe lights on but could help if the sounds aren’t coming through enough.

Up to Mission 13 in SoS now and all I want to do is play with Dante in every mission. His combination of styles and weapons makes him absolutely ridiculous to play with after some practice. Plus his DT modes are fucking stunning to watch!!
