How many people bought a One X purely because it was the most powerful console? For a lot of games it didn't offer much benefit over a vanilla Xboxone. The dashboard was bit quicker but not much. They didn't even use a hybrid drive to try and improve load times.

I don't really see how it's cynical? MS have fallen way behind in sales this generation, need some momentum going into next gen and the studios they've bought won't bare much meaningful fruit until well into next generation. There's no doubt they're heavily subsidising Game Pass, particularly for those of us who've done the three years for a quid thing but it means you're likely going to stick with them into next gen which seems a smart move on their part, arguably the smartest thing they've done this gen. It's likely going to force Sony's hand to follow suit in much the same way MS followed Sony with PSPlus/GwG which is good for consumers. Not sure the microtransaction argument holds up to much scrutiny either.

Gamepass is exactly how I was able to play both Gears of War 4 and Gears 5, while paying almost nothing to do so. As a game developer for over 10 years, working for places making software for Microsoft Games Studios, my personal opinion on game pass is pretty cemented as a cynical one.

Why though? Your original posts with your cynical stance on it has been shown to be completely wrong, so what other reasons have you got for being down on it?

Next gen Xbox is going to need a lot more decent exclusives. The infrastructure for Gamepass and the architecture for the hardware is all good, but with God of War, Spiderman, Horizon, TLOU etc all being fresh/refreshed exclusives, more Gears, Halo and Forza just doesn’t cut it.

That’s why MS went out and bought a load of studios, isn’t it?

Seems like they're trying to diversify Gamepass with mid-size games, rather than the marque titles that Sony go for.

As Pob says, those 100 hour epics take a long time to make. I imagine they’ll start coming in over the next couple of years. Besides womblingfree’s point was that they need more exclusives and I was just telling him that MS have got a lot of first party devs now.

It’s great MS are investing in their own devs but those Sony games are all around the 90 mark on metacritic. It took years for those studios to get to that level.

MS will really need to support these guys and invest in them properly, they can’t be pulling no Scalebounds this time.

Yeah, being a new XboneX owner I’m loving Gamepass but the lack of exclusives is a real problem as I played practically everything on there already. Apart from Halo, Gears and Forza.

Not Mario Oddessy , then?

That didn’t come out until later on, to begin with it was Zelda and Mario Kart selling the machine.

What exclusive games are coming out in the first year won't also be on PS4?

Quote

Following news the other day that Microsoft’s Xbox Series X won’t see exclusives at launch or anytime soon, PS5 gamers won’t need to worry about PS5 exclusives not being a thing — at least based on early reports.

In a new podcast by Kotaku, reliable industry reporter Jason Schreier mentioned that the PS5 will see PS5-only titles at launch (Holiday 2020). Based on what he has “heard,” some titles launching with the PS5 will be console-specific titles, which are being developed by first-party studios.

Note that this isn’t official info, so take it with a grain of salt. That said, Schreier has been very, very reliable when it comes to industry news, hence why we’re reporting it. This might not be that surprising to hear given how almost every PlayStation hardware has launched with console exclusives, but it’s a nice semi-confirmation, no?

Some of the PS5 games we know are in development include Godfall, and there’s a rumor that Knives Out is set to be released on the platform as well.

Which, rather shockingly, are last gen titles. They didn't even have the grace to add much in the way of extra graphics. ;)

For a while after launch, Zelda had sold more copies on Switch than they'd sold actual Switch machines.

Makes sense that Sony push as many PS5 exclusives out as early as possible that take advantage of the big leap in CPU and storage, unlike MS they don't have to worry about keeping compatibility with PC and last-gen and they have a fair number of games studios who specialise in open world games which is where this leap in compute and storage is likely going to be most apparent.

Are they all brand new studios MS have bought then? I know the Forza Horizon lot have setup a new team, but I thought the others were established devs.

I’m not sure what that proves or disproves, but Odyssey has sold more overall .

But that wasn’t a launch title, since I was comparing the Switch launch to Xbox Series X.

Im. not sure you can draw any parallels from WiiU>Switch to Xbox One> Series X . Loads of people that bought BoTW would have done so as a launch game for switch whilst not owning a Wii U.

Well yes my point was made in answer to Ryan or whoever it was saying that the Xbox One didn’t sell very well. The point was that if the game is a banger people will buy consoles to play it, or more importantly to MS, subscribe to Game Pass.

Yeah of course. Just need to be the right secret sauce.  And the XBox One sold great, of course. It just didn;t sell as welll as PS4.

In the end , for me, it's just about games. I dont care about game pass or ps now, or what's free and what isn't. I just want great games , and I'm happy to pay for them. PS4 absolutely nailed that last gen, to the point where its probably the best gaming machine i have ever owned. MS were so bad at it I didn't even bother buying a XBox One ; first time I have not had all major options in decades.

If MS produce great quality games, then they have me as a customer. It's as simple as that.
