Yeah, I'd have found that fucking embarrassing if that was my team. That match was one of the biggest mismatches I've ever seen to the point where 13 flattered Thailand, the equivalent of Germany playing a local amateur side's u17s team. The US have some technically very good players who all have the fitness and athleticism that comes with being a top level professional athlete, while a lot of the Thai players were downright out of shape. Not only that but some of the Americans looked about a foot taller than their opponents, and Thailand appeared to have never been introduced to concepts like keeping your formation or defending. Just celebrate quietly and quickly and get on with it. 

 

But American sports stars don't really do quiet or humble. It was a bit crass.

They should never have reached the finals, it demeans the prestige of it when you can have an amateur side crop up on the world's biggest stage.

 

All nations have to start somewhere plus it's an advert for the Thai kids watching it that will hopefully inspire them to get into the sport. I'm disappointed the BBC aren't giving this more coverage. 

 

In a perverse way, it also highlights the importance of women's football being a professional sport. Look at the difference between an amatuer and professional approach.

Thailand had an easier run to the final than most, with only China ranked above them of the five teams they faced in their two stages of qualifying. On another day, they may have drawn a shorter straw, perhaps getting a side like North Korea who were given the lowest seeding on account of having been banned for the 2015 Asian Cup, but are the third best team in Asia. They were knocked out on goal difference, finishing behind South Korea having drawn with them and beating everyone else.

 

Results like last night's are the exception rather than the norm, however - four years ago Thailand lost 4-0 to Germany and Norway, and beat the Ivory Coast 3-2. Twelve years ago, Argentina were humiliated by Germany 11-0, then in their very next game only lost to an injury time goal to Japan. The team will regroup for the Sweden game. They'll almost certainly lose but I doubt (and hope for their sake) it's not another double-digit drubbing.

 

Oh, and an amateur side cropping up on the world stage certainly was demeaning when the US beat England 1-0 in 1950.

This is probably a silly thing to say* but it just made me even more glad that the US generally aren't good at men's soccer, because if this 'MURICA attitude came into the mens sport it'd start to put me right off. Apparently one of the US Women's team celebrated by singing "Born in the USA". Ugh.

 

* It's a silly thing to say because it's not like Ronaldo is a shining example of humility and good sportsmanship.

Oh but it will be oh so glorious when the USA lose. Every tournament needs a pantomime villain, and thank goodness there is now one besides VAR.

 

Whoever knocks the US out, hope the full squad goes full Marco Tardelli towards their bench.

Wolves are currently the fifth highest spenders in Europe according to F365.

 

That said, I guess the transfer window hasn't really gathered pace yet and some clubs with deep pockets (Real Madrid being the notable exception), haven't really got going.

 

Still, that's a hell of an achievement for Wolves.

I'm guessing that's purely because we're signing Raul Jimenez permanently for £30m?  We've yet to sign anyone else since the season ended.

 

In terms of actual outlay, we've not actually been that high up under Fosun.  We've definitely got value for money (we'll ignore Adama Traore.....) as although we've obviously spent plenty, they've not been astronomical fees for depreciating assets.

Does the conversation about the Women's World Cup still belong here, as it's technically still a part of the 2018/2019 season maybe?

Women's football - what's the general feeling over the progress?  I haven't really been watching any of it, but noticed that the BBC seem to be giving it pretty much similar coverage as they did the men's World Cup last year, so seems like it's slowly being afforded a level of attention that may rival the men's soon.

 

Where can we watch the Women's Super League, is it Sky Sports?

I've been watching a few games but I haven't had much enjoyment from it yet. There's been some good skill and great moments but all the matches I've seen have been ridiculously one sided, attack vs defence.

 

I'm looking forward to the knock-out rounds where hopefully the competition should be fiercer.

I've been watching a fair bit and there is definitely a gulf in class, it reminds me of 80s football in some ways. A few stand out players but a lot of journeywomen. that doesn't make it bad in anyway though, some of the games have been properly exciting and I think the knockout stages could be really good.

They are using the new rules for the 19/20 season so it is part of the new season instead of the old one. The Nations League did not use the new rules.

I really like watched England, a good mix of pace, skill and power. 

Japan are superb technically but they are not strong at all which can make them easier to defend in front of, as proved by Argentina. 

USA are quality but hugely unlikable, Aus have been good. 

 

Women's football is fascinating. It's clearly getting better but clearly needs more time and investment. So often you see a great flowing move let down by the most sloppy of passes, often not under pressure. Either under or over hit seems to he the issue. 

 

The gulf in class is an issue too but again that will close over time. Thailand scored their first world cup goal and it was a great goal too. Stories like this must not be disregarded, they are great. After all, the Japanese men only scored their first world cup goal in 1998, seems remarkable now when you consider them going toe to toe with the best in the world.
